Read it over the weekend.. Loved it. I have followed Ron Baker's most recent work: Pricing on Purpose, Firm of The Future, and Mind over Matter... but wanted to reas his first book.. Fantastic, strongly recommend it if you can find it used... However, if you have to choose between this one and the "new" version of this book: "Implementing Value Pricing" get the new one Implementing Value Pricing: A Radical Business Model for Professional Firms

The book is great. Ron Baker provides insight into the valuation of services from an economics perspective and contrasts that with traditional notions of cost-plus pricing in the form of hourly fees. He encourages accounting and legal professionals to focus more on the customer and his/her needs in establishing an agreed price up front, rather than focusing on the service-provider's needs to cover costs. He provides historical insight into cost pricing and illustrates his arguments by suggesting what non-professional transactions might look like if other industries priced their goods or services like lawyers and accountants do.I purchased a used version of the book because it was nearly new and still had the original software with it--unopened. Unfortunately, the software is outdated and I cannot seem to utilize it. My lower rating does not reflect the quality of the book (which I recommend that everyone read) but to call attention to the outdated software and encourage others to buy a newer version.

I heard great things about this book which led me to purchase it. I was hesitant given it's age but I figured it had withstood the test of time. When I received it and started reading I was disappointed that it is targeted to CPAs of which I know nothing about. Just before throwing it aside and moving onto other more "valuable" books I decided to keep reading. I can't imagine the implications of not having continued.Being in the professional services industry I was looking for a book that would help me make sense of pricing my services and being valuable to my clients. I haven't read the entire book but I poured through most of it in a single evening. At the time I was reading this I was also preparing a proposal for a client and decided to take a risk and put to use some of what I had read. I was afraid and certain that my proposal would be rejected and that I would be ridiculed. Instead, to my surprise, the proposal was eagerly accepted without hesitation. Needless to say, I will be studying this book much deeper.Buy this book. It will take you to the next level. It's that good.

This author was in high school with my children 20+ years ago, and her parents are friends. So, of course, I wanted to read Jessica's first published book. That's why I bought it. But that's not why I've chosen to review it and give it a five-star rating.Those stars were earned because this is not only a beautifully written book and a compelling story, it is also a book that required (on the part of the author) courage, intelligence, research, and brutal honesty to peel back the layers of lies, truth, perception, and raw emotion around several years of her life. It is ultimately a book about humanity and the many ways each person chooses to cope with life, luck (good and bad), hardship, and the stories we tell ourselves in an attempt to make sense of it all. it is also a fascinating and clear-eyed perspective on the challenges of coming of age in the late 1990s and the cultural and psychological impact of 9/11 on our whole society.Jessica toured for several years as a violinist with an ensemble who only pretended to play and the audience heard only canned music. This alone was a strange and fascinating story. Her myriad physical and mental health issues during this time were hard to read about, but she poignantly depicted the turbulence and danger of youthful anxiety and stress. The author tells her story with honesty and compassion...compassion for her young self and for the parents she knows she is lucky to have.Some of the writing took my breath away as it pulled me into her world and experiences. Her description of the emotional impact of the music she played on the violin in a high school concert from Fritz Kreisler's "Praeludium and Allegro in the style of Pugnani" was one of the most brilliant and masterful pieces of writing about a powerful musical experience I've ever read (think Ann Patchett's passages about opera in Bel Canto).Besides writing exquisitely, besides bringing us a fascinating story, besides taking us on a thoughtful journey through turn-of-the-21st-century culture and societal landmarks, Jessica Hindman has also shown us how to look at life, sift through the clues to its meaning, and find the strength to identify and hang on to what's true and worth preserving—how to navigate the pain, confusion, and messiness and still emerge with newfound insights, convictions, and appreciations—ones that will serve you well for the next leg of your journey.Bravo, Jessica. You've reminded us that we must never let anyone else define success for us. It is ours alone to define and embrace, as you have clearlydone in your own life.

I usually stick to fiction, because a character's life as invented by the author has to be more interesting than the real lives of people around us. But Jessica's account of working for The Composer is weirder than fiction. Sure, it's a story about being a violinist in fake concerts, but also manages to be a study on the nature of memoir, reality, growing up female in the nineties, undergraduate class conflict, a tour of America at war, and the unreliable narrator in our own heads.I really appreciated the vulnerability she put into this book. It allows even a reader with the most boring life to relate to the sometimes crazy experiences the author had. While Jessica is critiquing her young self for her inability to make a living doing something important, I'm admiring all of the ways that she at least tried, harder than most people ever try at anything. Before I even finished reading this book it was obvious that she had managed to do something important and creative: This book is brilliant. I can't wait to read what she writes next.

Most modern memoir writers fall short by relating and describing less than completely believable situations or characters. In short, they seem not quite honest or even almost fake. I doubt that any reader of "Sounds Like Titanic" will come to any such conclusion. Ms Hindman's memoir grabbed me from the beginning, kept me involved and interested and concerned throughout and when she emerged from her travails triumphant (almost, sort of) I wanted to cheer. This author may not have had the "rey ell gift" as a violinist but she certainly does as a writer. She's now one of my favorites.

This book grab me from the first sentence. It was well recommended to me, but I didn’t quite grasp the concepts… She’s playing music, but she’s not really playing?? It unfolds beautifully and so very honest Lee. I hope we hear from her again soon.

One thing I REALLY hated about this book: it ended! And the end snuck up on me like the end of my own musical career (replaced by a career in computers.). Keep writing Melissa...you have a reeayeall (sp?) gift! Peace

Background: I am vegetarian, I am not vegan, I do like Mexican food, I do not do a whole lot of cooking, I am good at following directions.Summary: The book provides a variety of vegan "fillings" for tacos. It also provides the recipes for the associated sauces/toppings/condiments as well as the tortillas themselves. The recipes are amazingly flavorful and fun to make. Cleanse? Not so sure... Change my life? Without a doubt!Comments:This book has absolutely wowed me. Admittedly, the "cleanse" part of the book is only half-way serious, but, (as the book says) if you look at a cleanse as being more than just the body but also of the spirit I can kinda get into their semi-serious cleanse.So, not being a "cleanse", why do I like it?-The recipes are REALLY good. I eat out for most every meal... But, after having made about 6 things from the book I am beginning to wonder why. I am making more enjoyable meals at home than eating out. I would say most recipes are about a 20-40 min commitment which is not too bad.-My room mate, while non-vegetarian, is lactose intolerant. As a perk, the book has a DAMN good recipe for a vegan "nacho cheese" and a not bad recipe for a ranch dressing. Seriously. I like my 7-11 nacho cheese and this stuff is better and (I assume) a whole lot healthier!!-The book encouraged me to make staples I have never made before.... Tortillas, seitan, etc. Neat! And they are really not that hard. Also, as everyone says, home-made corn tortillas really are pretty good (and easy).-While I do eat tofu and other soy products, I try not to overdo it because of the phytoestragen issue even though the evidence is really not supportive of that being an issue. So, that said, the book does have a lot of recipes using gluten and other non-soy protein sources. Of course there are lots of soy/non-gluten recipes as well. In general, the book has a lot of diversity for meat substitutes and it has opened my world a bit here.Some additional comments....-A large number of the recipes are much more involved than I am used to. I find that I had to really supplement my shelves to start to play with this book -- not a bad thing, but, I had never bought a jackfruit in brine or a soy curl or liquid smoke or "nutritional yeast".... Then again, I also had never bought dry dill nor coriander -- so take this comment with the realization that I am not much of a cook. Many of the recipes want to have a "readthru" before attempting to prep -- I find that I usually have 1 or 2 little bowls filled with mixes of ingredients so I can add them at the right times during the preparation.-I like cumin, but, the authors LOVE cumin. Yum. Well written, gorgeous pics. Got it as a gift for some family on the Forks Over Knives diet. They love it, and I loved flipping through it before giving it to them.

Each time you indulge in any combination of tortillas, fillings, and toppings, your chakras will shed their toxins. Your aura will glow with the radiance of taco spices. You will feel peace.It's humorous and takes the piss out of cleanses, yes, but it's also a great cookbook in and of itself. The recipes make a lot of leftovers, perfect for my two-person household. I really like the Jackfruit Brisket, Enlightened Soy Curls al Pastor, Arroz Verde, Sriracha Agave Tenders, Baja Slaw, and Deeply Roasted Chipotle Butternut Squash. Tortillas are way easier to make than you might think, and homemade corn tortillas are FAR superior to anything from the store. Most of the recipes are for individual fillings and sauces, which makes for fun on Taco Tuesday because I come up with something different every time. As if that's not enough, the omni half of the household also reports that the recipes are delicious and will eat them with great vigor.

I liked the attention to detail in areas such as TMSL that have limited documentation on MSDN and other sources. Also optimizing tabular models. I’d highly recommend it to intermediate BI developers looking to get the most out of SSAS tabular.

If you purchased this book make sure it has all the pages. The copy I received were missing some pages between 264 and 297. This is the end of Chapter 9 and majority of Chapter 10. Up to that point, I enjoyed the book.

This is the definitive book to have for any professional BI designer, developer, support engineer. This is the must have resource in your library to excel in the Microsoft BI fast moving area.

It allowed for me to see different ways to travel every month if i wanted to instead of once a year.
