Amazon.com Review

Coming Out Spiritually is structured by author Christian de la Huerta's idea that gay people have traditionally assumed 10 spiritual roles or archetypes, and continue to assume them today. These include, among others, "creator of beauty," "mediator," "shaman," and "healer." This understanding of gay people's spirituality draws on a number of religious traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Sufism, and Taoism. After establishing his theoretical understanding of gay spirituality, de la Huerta suggests spiritual practices (ranging from meditation to healing to Sufi dancing) that can help readers achieve greater spiritual integrity. Perhaps the most interesting passages in the book consider how sex itself can express spiritual devotion. "When we learn to reunite sex and Spirit in our lives, we will experience change and healing beyond our wildest dreams," de la Huerta writes. Coming Out Spiritually describes a mode of spirituality that has previously been explored in the work of Andrew Harvey and Matthew Fox, among others. Christian de la Huerta is equally passionate, and his message--that the coming-out process, when understood in spiritual terms, never ends--is an important one. This book may be a bit confusing to gay people just beginning to come out. (Like Harvey and Fox, de la Huerta sometimes uses jargon that obscures his arguments.) For gay people who have a pretty good sense of who they are, however, Coming Out Spiritually can be an important resource for continuing the process of learning to live honestly with their desires. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly

For many years, de la Huerta contends, gays and lesbians have been forced by organized religion to separate their sexual identities from their spiritual identities. The resulting spiritual fragmentation, according to the author, has been devastating to the gay community. De la Huerta, the founder and executive director of Q-Spirit, an international network of gays and lesbians focusing on spirituality, encourages "queers" (a term he uses to refer to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people, in spite of its offensiveness to some people) to engage in "practical experimentation" of their spirituality. He states that his "desire is to inspire a sense of wonderment, purpose, service, and mission in the gay community. It is now time for us to consciously reclaim and reinvent the roles we have played." To that end, his first chapter names 10 roles that queers have historically played, arguing that the spiritual function and value of these roles need to be recognized. For example, de la Huerta notes that, throughout history, queers have played the role of shaman and priest. He lists several examples of ancient religious functionaries, such as the female agule ("like men") and the male okule ("like women") mediums of the Lugbara tribe of East Africa. In his second chapter, de la Huerta explores various methodsAyoga, meditation, psychotherapy, Qi Gong and the labyrinthAthat enable a person to encounter his or her own spiritual depths. Chapter three focuses on sexuality as an expression of spirituality. "When we learn to reunite sex and Spirit in our lives," he says, "we will experience change and healing beyond our wildest dreams." In the final chapter, de la Huerta contends that coming out spiritually is a culmination of the journey of self-discovery. He notes that coming out means healing old wounds and moving beyond old identities as spiritually fragmented victims to embrace oneself as one really is: "empowered, compassionate, loving, ready to make a difference in the world, and fully able to embrace the totality of life." Appendices offer an overview of the world's spiritual traditions, a resource guide of spiritual organizations and a list of books, audios and videos. De la Huerta's beautifully crafted prose and his passionate desire to help queers come out spiritually mark this book as an extraordinary achievement. "Coming Out Spiritually" by Christian de la Huerta was named one of its top ten religion books of 1999 by Publisher's Weekly. Now in its eighth printing, the book has provided gay and lesbian people and their friends and allies with a thorough and thoughtful synthesis of their queer and spiritual selves.Born in Cuba, de la Huerta is a passionate proponent of the special role he sees gays and lesbians playing in today's society. He believes that gays and lesbians are meant to be catalysts for the world's spiritual evolution, and that the time has come for them to embrace this joyous responsibility. Graduating with honors from Tulane University, the author has been a therapist and group facilitator for the past dozen years and is founder and president of "Q-Spirit", an international network of gays and lesbians in spirituality. For many years, de la Huerta contends, gays and lesbians have been forced by organized religion to separate their sexual identities from their spiritual identities. The resulting spiritual fragmentation, according to the author, has been devastating to gay people and barely less costly to their larger community. This book discusses a number of ways of "coming out," focusing on a spiritual foundation for that process.De la Huerta begins his book with a story from taken from a meeting of people from around the world intending to form an organization known as United Religions (a faith-based analogue of the United Nations), with a purpose of finding common ground among the world's religious traditions. At this conference the author spoke about the "Wild Faith," the queer spiritual tradition and about including gay people in the orgaization's efforts. From the positive reception de la Huerta received, he continued discussions and developed a methodology and resources for this bookAccording to de la Huerta, homosexual and other gender-variant people have always served a spiritual function in their communities, particularly in times of radical social transformation. Like physicians, they are (and always have been) there to preside over the death of the old, assuring a peaceful and pain-free passing; like midwives, they attend the birth of the new, assuring a safe delivery and a welcome into the world. The author elaborates ten specific ways in which gay people and other gender-variant folk have for millenia lent their spiritual gifts to the world, presenting evidence of these roles (copiously documented and substantiated with a wealth of footnotes) throughout history and in different cultures: these archetypes include the Transformer, the Outsider, the Risk-Taker, the Sacred Clown, the Preserver of Beauty, the Caregiver, the Mediator, the Priest/Shaman, the Divine Androgyne and the Gatekeeper."Coming Out spiritually" introduces readers to many of the world's religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Sufism, and Taoism, and investigates the teachings of these traditions and their attitudes towards homosexuality. The large majority of books published on the subject of queer spirituality are written from an exclusively or predominantly Christian or Judaeo-Christian point of view.Happily, in this book there is included an exploration of a wide variety of faiths and belief systems. This is one of the few books encountered that doesn't use the adjectives "religious" and "spiritual" as interchangeable synonyms, clarifying the fact that spirituality is a quality that comes from within rather than - as is the case with 'religion' - from without, a phenomenon tied to the trappings of dogma and creeds that institutionalized religions expound. Because of the great - often, lethal - injury that some organized religions have inflicted (and continue to inflict) upon sexual minorities, many in our community have closed themselves off to the very essential and very human spiritual sides of themselves. In essence, by associating spirituality only with religion, our kindred have metaphorically "throw the baby out with the bathwater."This is one of the most important books I have read on the subject of queer spirituality, or spirituality generally, in a good many years. I heartily recommend it to students of queer history, particularly in its spiritual aspect, for individuals curious as to what they (we) bring to the world in terms of distinctive and important spiritual gifts, and - particularly - for queer folk who have been injured by protracted exposure to all-too-abundant toxic religion and have turned their attention away from their spiritual selves.Christian de la Huerta has authored a masterful, indispensable, tool for gay self-empowerment.

Phenomenal read. I read a LOT of spiritual texts, and this hit me deeper than anything before, because it is written with the light of my spiritual expression of sexuality as well. Please read, and would make an awesome gift for anyone LGBT person searching for a deeper truth.

....if you are [still] questioning .... and want to put a stop to it .... this is EXCELLENT !.....

Coming Out Spiritually came to me at the right time. I'd resigned from the ministry and wandered around like a lost soul for six years with 1,000 questions floating through my head. Finally accepting the fact that I was gay meant (as far as I knew at the time) walking away from my church, Christian friends, faith and purpose; the things that had been the foundation for the majority of my life. I had already come to a place where I was able to re-look at these things. Hungry to understand more I began reading and reading and reading. Finding Christians book at the local gay bookstore was serendipitous. It helped me see the bigger picture and that possibly I'd thrown the baby out with the bathwater. Thanks to this book I discovered my now redefined spirituality. One of the things that really impressed me was the amount of research Christian had obviously done to write this work. It's not just one man's idea's but the wisdom of the ages beautifully synthesized by the author for all LGBT people and our wonderful tribe.Anthony Venn-BrownAuthor of 'A Life of Unlearning – a preacher's struggle with his homosexuality, church and faith.

This book discusses a number of ways of "coming out." But de la Huerta concentrates on a spiritual foundation for this. He begins his book with a story from a meeting of people from around the world forming United Religions. The purpose is to find common ground among the world's religious traditions. At this conference he spoke up about including gay people. From some of the positive reception Huerta received, he continued discussions and developing research for this book . In chapter one he names ten ways gay people are spiritual gifts to the world. He presents evidence of these roles throughout history and in different cultures. He stresses that being gay includes these types of dispositions, such as the caregiver, the risk taker, etc. It is true that gay people experience these ten dispositions, but so do straight people. Yet in numerous cultures the one who plays two sexes or changes their way of being is viewed as a manifestation of the presence of God in their society and they are respected and their advice followed. Huerta explores the background of many of the world's religions. Through them he discusses different spiritual disciplines people could practice to become aware of their own spirituality and connection to God. That chapter becomes somewhat tedious in that everything presented is not going to be for everyone reading the book. That chapter is best skimmed over and passages resonating with the reader can be explored. The last chapter of the book stresses doing things. He presents a number of stories of people in traditional religions, non-traditional religions and in non-sectarian services. He tries to show how these gay people find their spiritual well-being by putting their spirituality to work. This sounds like a Protestant/Catholic faith/works dialogue. What Huerta is stressing is that there are needs in the world around us, our neighborhoods and cities. Gay people do have disposition for service and leadership. They can find spiritual health as well as personal well-being in taking part. Sometimes this can lead to understanding. There are some interesting discussions of spirituality in this book by several people Huerta has interviewed. Other people's stories of coming out are touching and challenging. This is a good book to read for information. His index in the back offers lists of religions and services for gay people to consider.

I have the Robin Buss translation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO in paperback, but that copy was old and worn. I wanted a more durable hardcover edition to read and to display on my bookshelf in my new house. The hardcover I bought from Total Books arrived in near-perfect condition, exactly as advertised, and looks gorgeous on the shelf. Why Robin Buss' translation for Penguin Classics? That's a reasonable question since Alexandre Dumas has been dead long enough for his works to enter the public domain. Several translations of his major novels are not only available in cheaper editions (such as Barnes & Noble Classics), but for free on Project Gutenberg. These are inferior and, in the case of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, censored translations. Most of them date back to the Victorian period, and render Dumas' evergreen French into English prose that feels old-fashioned and stilted today. Furthermore, because these are translations from the Victorian period, the translators filtered Dumas through their own moral sensibilities to give us Bowdlerized versions of a novel that ran on sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll a century before rock 'n roll was something you could do without a machine gun.Robin Buss' unabridged translation comes directly from the original French and renders Dumas into fresh, readable modern English. Material previously omitted by Victorian-era translators such as Franz' hashish-fueled sexual fantasies and the strongly implied lesbian relationship between Eugenie and Louise remain intact and uncensored. As another reviewer pointed out, Buss will provide footnotes to explain subtleties that aren't easily translated from French to English, such as insults delivered by using the formal you (vous) rather than the informal/friendly/intimate you (tu).A detailed appendix provides valuable historical and cultural context that aids the reader in understanding Dumas' masterpiece, and includes a primer on the rise, fall, return, and final downfall of Napoleon Bonaparte that is crucial to making sense of the politics driving the novel's plot.If you cannot read Dumas in his native French, and you want a definitive English version, Robin Buss's unabridged and uncensored modern English translation is essential reading. No other translation will suffice.

This is my favorite novel, a story not only of persecution and vengeance, but of man's relation to his God and how it drives, inspires and interferes with his judgements. Often adapted to film, nobody has captured the depth of Dumas' perceptions and understanding of people, largely because filmmakers focus on the excellently-told action rather the true essence of the story. This is one man's battle against himself, beautifully articulated egardless of which translation from French you choose to read. If you've not read Dumas before, be aware that he sets up his characters and circumstances, creating mysteries, then departs from his main story line to pursue secondary characters. All the threads pull together by the end of the story, but through at least a third of the book, Edmund Dantes is only peripherally present. Don't be discouraged - it's worth the wait, as the resolution is one of the most moving I've encountered in literature. A brilliant book by one of history's most original writers and creators of great heroes.

I love this book. It is a masterpiece of writing and I wanted a copy I could read any time I wanted. However, the Kindle edition has so many errors that it is unreadable. Every page has words running together, and it makes for a huge headache to get through even 2 pages. I couldn't read it due to these issues. I'm very glad I only spent $1.99 on it, but I wish I had spent nothing. A very poorly edited kindle edition.

It's a classic for a reason. I can hardly put it down.

This classic story of wrongful imprisonment, hidden treasure, and revenge is truly a masterpiece. Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel The Count of Monte Cristo has seen life not only in print but in film and television, but one cannot appreciate the novel unless you read it in its entire unabridged length.Edmond Dantes is wrongfully accused of a crime and thrown in prison without trial to be forgotten, after overcoming both mental and physical anguish and befriending a fellow prisoner, and finally he is able to escape. Thanks to his friendship Dantes knows where a potential hidden treasure is located and finds it to be real, and using it begins finding out why he was thrown into prison and chart is path to revenge through fortune and hidden identities. Yet what this quick synopsis omits is the numerous and fascinating major and secondary characters that Dantes interacts throughout the narrative.Originally published in serial form, Dumas was paid for how much he wrote and one would think that The Count of Monte Cristo might be riddled with meandering subplots that never go anywhere and/or have nothing to do with the central plot. But Dumas instead wove a tapestry of beauty with every word he wrote; instead of making meandering plots he described scenes and events in rich detail that it brings the story even more alive in the reader’s imagination. If pressed to find anything negative to say about this book, the easiest answer would be cultural references that are almost 170 years old. The only other negative was the completely different societal norms that were in Parisian society in the 1840s compared today’s. However both of these ‘negatives’ can easily be put down to a piece of fiction that was contemporary when it was written but now can be seen as historical fiction with the passage to time. The Count of Monte Cristo needs to be read in all its unabridged glory to fully appreciate why it is a masterpiece and classic. Dumas’ literary tapestry is a delight to behold once finished with the last page and makes the reader think about when they’ll have time to reread it in the future.

Prague Essential Travel guideHis best advice - stay outside of the city!!! Go into the city for fun, tours, museums, food, etc. Consider eating outside the city!It is possible to get on the #22 tram or any of them going in the opposite direction. If you cannot read Czech, at least have a compass, used away from steel railroad tracks, to find north and south so you can catch your mistake. We used Apple iPhone and maps to solve the problem. Prague is a very big place and could be confusing without a very good map. We bought the 3 day pass which covers the trams, below ground metro, so ride with enthusiasm to even remote scattered sites. Skip taxi's except for a final luxurious ride back to airport with a private driver. Ask the hotel to arrange that. Hotel Adalbert was the best find. Go to neighborhood restaurants. Same good food as the larger tourist places and 1/2 price! Excellent beers, too. Avoid the tour groups and the ad-hoc tour groups. Follow the book and really enjoy this city.

This was perfect for our three-day trip to Prague. We tried a few of Rick Steve's customized walks to see different sights off the beaten path and a few of his locally-loved restaurant recommendations. The restaurants were fantastic, the walks were worthwhile, and his information never let us down. I'll be using Rick Steve's products again if we go on another European trip. In fact, I bought two extra copies of this book for two relatives who were visiting Prague in the near future.

Very useful and practical book. Steves can make your planning and sightseeing so much more fun because he cuts to the heart of what you need to know. Maybe a little more in-depth discussion of the artistic but often problematic cobblestone paving would have been useful to me (every sharp, pointy little cobblestone seemed to have my name on it; and the tram tracks are not exactly embedded into the surface level of the broader cobblestones of the streets.). His self-guided walking tours and restaurant recommendations are particularly useful. Take his advice about riding the trams for getting around and for seeing areas out of the tourist centers. Very instructive. The metro system is amazingly swift and runs on time. We found his advice particularly useful in exploring the Jewish Quarter for most of a day. If you have any knowledge of European Jewish life and history (and perhaps more importantly, if you don't), the Quarter and the "model" but very real concentration camp just outside the city will be a heart-stopping revelation. He tells you to pull out the book pages you need, rather than lug the whole book along for a specific destination. I supplemented his information with other books that go into greater depth about various locales and sights (and their names in Czech). His love of the history and culture is excellent and succinctly presented, and those sections will make your trip much more enjoyable.

I purchased Rick Steves Prague & The Czech Republic tour book as an addendum to the information I already had from the tour company with which I was travelling and for the few extra days I was staying in Prague after the tour. It served the purpose perfectly. The map within the book helped to view the relationship of the various neighborhoods in Prague: New Town, Old, Town, The Jewish Quarter, The Lesser Quarter and the Castle Quarter. The book helped to both enhance information I received from my guide and to remind me of what I had learned. Finally, it helped me to begin to understand the Czech money, because even though the Czech Republic is part of the European Union and the Euro is accepted in some places, for the most part, the Czech Koruna (Crown) is the most widely accepted form of money. The tour I was on took us to many towns outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. This guide book helped me to orient myself within the country. I highly recommend it.

(There are many reviews here; but I wanted to chime in with one for the Ninth Edition, since most are for older versions.)I am packing my bags to return home from Prague and plan to leave this for the next person in this apartment, so I thought I'd write a quick review. I wish I'd used the book more than I did, but the recommendations we used were top notch. (As I'm leaving and skimming through "what did I miss"?, I realize that yeah, just riding a tram such as 22 to get a feel for things would have been a great idea.)We stayed in Old Town, which is noisy but wonderful. And probably what I enjoyed most about Prague has been wandering around the crooked lanes and getting a little bit lost and stumbling on a nice place to eat and some David Cerny statues. Pick a direction to head and wander around... we spent several days with this strategy and just loved Prague to pieces. This is why we didn't end up picking up the book much. We never had a bad meal, for example, sometimes seeking out a particular place, but often just finding one.But of course, one wants to know the things "not to miss", so a book is helpful, as are the back stories and logistical tips, and I have really enjoyed this book for this.Food highlights for us included a splurge to eat at Hotel u Prince Terasa (thanks to Rick's advice), which was not as expensive as we'd feared. (About $120 US for two of us, with all the food we could want and many drinks as we sat their enjoying our lovely perch.) We also enjoyed the vegetarian Maitrea and Mjelnice... but really, everything was great, whether we sought it out or stumbled onto it.We used Rick's advice to pick the sights we wanted to see, as well as to decide to take a day trip to Cesky Krumlov.Anyway, great guide, and I recommend it to you.
