Janet Evans has written a well-planned, thorough introduction to essential oils and homemade beauty products. Her book introduces readers to many of the most common essential oils available on the market today. She provides basic information for each of these common essential oils, including details about the extraction processes for each oil, and more importantly, details about the common benefits and traditional uses for each oil. She also includes a lot of extra information, but she keeps it simple without overdoing the details. Janet has also written 70 recipes and instructions for readers to make their own homemade beauty products, and they're recipes and instructions that everyone can readily comprehend and follow.She offers also a candid truth, dispelling a lot of the hype about one's choices in brand. That is, in one brand of essential oils versus another, suggesting to other readers what this aromatherapy practitioner has known for a long time: Pure essential oils are pure. One brand is not necessarily better than another, and high priced oils are not better simply because one pays a higher price to purchase them. Besides, it's quite likely all are being manufactured by the same companies and just billed or marketed as being different ( i.e. therapeutic grade vs. standard). That's simply not been my experience over the last 2 decades.Janet's work also discusses skin types, and distinguishes the three main skin types, helping readers understand the qualities of each skin type, and to help them identify which category describes their skin. Knowing one's skin type, in turn, helps readers discern which essential oils and which of Janet's recipes are better suited for use with individual skin types. I appreciated greatly that her recipes are kept simple, so as not to complicate your homemade products with a whole lot of unpronounceable chemicals. In my mind, keeping it simple is kind of the point. For example, her recipes use base ingredients like unadulterated, plain lotions, or pure shea nut butter, or pure apricot oil, or pure jojoba oil and others. Many of her recommendations for base product ingredients are typically available at local health food stores, or they are certainly easy enough to locate for purchase from online suppliers on amazon.com. keep in mind that the descriptions of oils marked as organic, may in fact be different from non-organic oils, albeit no regulations by the FDA have yet been established describing what use of the word ("organic") must mean about accepted standards. Nor has there yet been a precise description articulating any standard of the legal definition for this term ("organic"). [Or, rather is that the word "green"?]Experienced aromatherapists, massage professionals and laypersons alike will find that Janet Evans has written a useful resource, adequately covering some of the most commonly used essential oils and discussing how skin types should be taken into consideration when making homemade skin care products with essential oils, and Janet has also provided a wealth of DIY recipes for homemade, yet effective, customized beauty products you're sure to love.

I've used essential oils in the past, primarily to make custom massage oils and for aromatherapy for myself. I didn't make any beauty treatments and so I was interested in this book. Making massage oils is easy, add some drops of the oil or oils to fit the needs of the person I was massaging or giving massage oil to for their own use. An afternoon pick me up massage that includes rosemary, one for sleep with lavender and chamomile-all you need are the oils themselves and a good reference on what outcomes the oils can assist in making happen. The needs for aromatherapy are similar. But beauty treatments? Anything beyond adding a few drops of an oil to a lotion involved, I thought would be complicated and a lot of work. This book makes it easy.There's a section on how to determine your skin and hair type. If you don't already know it, this is useful particulary to help you with choosing which skin treatments to make. My only gripe here is in the recipe section it says to use the carrier oil that works with your skin type, but it doesn't say which carrier oils go with each skin type.The book starts with information about essential oils which is a bit technical. The author follows that with a very clear, concise and interesting history of essential oils. A few common essential oils are described in detail- what plant they come from, the extraction proceess, color, scent and uses. This was excellent, but I would've preferred that at least all the essential oils mentioned in the book were listed here. That way oils you don't immediately recognize the scent of could be described. Having a more comprehensive list would also help when making modifications to a recipe, such as for when you're allergic to one listed. There's also a section on creating kits of essential oils for home, office and travel.The recipes themselves are great. Very easy to understand and easy to do. These would be great projects not just for yourself and gifts for others, but for your kids to do with you as beauty treatments for themselves. I remember being in Girl Scouts and troop leaders scrambling for activities. This could be great fun for them. A Boy Scouts troop could also do one or more of these as a project for Mother's Day. Some boy might even ask why only women seem to take care of their skin :)Having had dark circles under my eyes from just about birth, I'm sure all the different recipes for these will get made as I try them out over time. First dark circle reducer on the list done today. There's lots of things for your face from toners to cleansers to anti-aging serums. There's ones for your body as well, such as the lemon thyme body scrub designed for me, I'm sure of it. But I've used facial products on my body, particularly things for dryness, as my skin is sensitive and facial products are sometimes better tolerated. I'm planning on doing that here as well as since I'm making it, even with the cost of materials, it'll still be cost effective. There's also a few recipes in here to help your hair look and feel healthier.The lips and nails get a lot of treatments here. Different types of ones for your lips, including gloss and balms make it likely you'll find something to your liking. Peppermint cocoa lip balm and mandarin nutmeg lip balm have my number, but there are several others I plan to try. There's nail strengthening, nail nourishing and cuticle help here for starters. As someone with chronic nail trouble, i look forward to experimenting.I recommend this book, especially if you've not made beauty products at home before. There's a variety of recipes here to help you look beautiful that might make you feel healthier too. There's even a few to help with bug bites and scrapes. Spending time making products for yourself and loved ones is not only a fun way to spend time but can save you some money as you trade some more expensive products in for your homemade ones. Plus, you know exactly what's in them, which is particularly appealing when making things for your family. I did receive this book at a free or discounted rate in exchange for my honest review.
