In 1981 Henri Nouwen sojourned for six months in Bolivia and Peru. He had recently completed his time teaching at Yale and was seeking God for answers on how to spend the next chapter of his life. For years I have known Henri Nouwen as a contemplative, and I have begun to discover him as one who pursued justice for the poor and the oppressed. I wanted to read this journal to gain insight into the symbiotic relationship of contemplation and action. He had the understanding that a life devoted to God should involve caring for the poor. He seemed compelled to go to South America to learn from the poor and potentially make a home and ministry in their midst. You could sense his eagerness and wonder as he began to experience a new culture and people. He had the privilege of viewing Christian holy days and religious practices with the eyes of a child. As someone who grew up in the institutional church you could sense he was enlivened by seeing fresh expressions of faith. His time in Latin America coincided with a period of religious and political change and unrest. Liberation theology was entering a phase of resistance within the structures of the church. The poor were increasing in their efforts of political and agrarian freedoms. In this setting Nouwen was able to get a first hand experience of extreme poverty. He was able to see how God's people had a key role to play in the pursuit of justice. At the same time he was confronted with feelings of loneliness and uselessness. He was simultaneously motivated to help bring change and wrestling with feeling like an outsider who did not have much to contribute. I was amazed by his keen awareness of the need for “missioners” to not try to convert people, rather to try and learn from them. He was devastated by the way colonial Christians had desecrated indigenous culture in the name of their God. He seemed ahead of his time in his perceptions of mission work, in a way that many still fail to grasp. Ultimately he seemed forever changed by his experience. He was confronted with a liminal state where he was no longer satisfied with the religious practices that he previously participated in but where he felt not fully at home in the religious expressions he was witnessing. He began to long for a different type of communal experience. He knew the importance of being among the poor and he recognized the role that played in his own heroes of the faith. I related to much of what he was experiencing. I have known a deep longing to help the poor and have recognized the privilege I come from that prevents me from true union with poverty. His desire to be of use by God and for others was contrasted by his feelings of isolation and depression. I have strong conviction that the Christian life should be lived in service to the poor and oppressed. I also resonate with feelings of ineptitude. Where should I put my efforts? What is God calling me to? Like Nouwen, I realize that more gifts are received from the poor than we could ever hope to give them. I recognize that I have much more to learn from those on the margins of society than I do from other people of privilege. I admire the ability he had to learn from others, to sympathize with their grief and offer himself in any way that might be helpful. I was inspired by his commitment to be a student of those who the world doesn't think it has much to learn. Nouwen was moved by the spirit of gratitude he saw in so many. After reading this journal I hope to carry more of that gratitude in my own life. I also feel a renewed sense of drive to pursue orientating my life towards learning more from the poor and oppressed.

Even though I am clergy of a different denomination, I am grateful to have discovered the prophetic support of Rev. Nouwen's work. I found this book extremely thought provoking in regards to serving the marginalized and looking at the suffering that pastoral serving often entails. It helped my sermon preparation tremendously. Rev. Nouwen uses journaling as a major way of gaining clarity of thoughts about life issues that are unimaginable and terroristic as he observed others ministering in difficult places during their call to serve in Bolivia and Peru. He journals through the pain of loneliness, depression, and feeling marginalize, until he is able to see God working in those painful situations. There is not an over abundance of "God talk", that can be a turn off for some, (me not included). However, there is a deep sense of reverence conveyed throughout the book as he experiences the poor as their gratitude toward God is witnessed. His works may appeal to those seeking inspiration for spiritual transformation. I did not want the book to end so I took extended time to finish the final chapters and "chewed" on the dropped spiritual nuggets. I plan to read more of his works and have recently ordered "Genius Born of Anguish, The Life & Legacy of Henri Nouwen",by Higgins and Burns in an effort to learn more about his life and spiritual influences.Rev. Ella

This journal of Nouwen includes his exploration of going to South America. He was a restless soul and he journaled about his wondering if God was calling him elsewhere. The journal captures some of his feelings and inspirations and gives some interesting information on his trip. This journal isn't as good as some of his other journals such as the Genessee Diary or the Road to Daybreak or his Sabbatical Journey.

This Fr. Henri Nouwen is the best author ever! He writes so that we were traveling with him. Favorite Author now. Gracias and Muchas Gracias to Fr. Henri! So sad he had to leave this earth so young! LOVED this book! Ready to follow in his footsteps and go to S. America. (I recently met a nun who did just that - and MET Fr. Henri while there)!!

I have read Henri Nouwen's work before and knew some of his story. This diary was like experiencing a type of personal retreat of my own. He is able to clearly state his interior struggles, his own weaknesses and his humility in such a simple but powerful way. A book that many trying to understand another culture and live in a close relationship with Jesus would benefit greatly by reading this book.

This is a great book and a reliable source of inspiration. I haven't been a big reader of Nouwen, not so interested in books that preach to me. But his journals really reach me. I can identify with the struggles he faces and apply his thoughtful reflections to my life. I recommend this highly to all who can be turned off by traditional spiritual or inspirational reading.

I'm currently a college student on a 6 month research internship in SE Asia; so much of Nouwen's words and thoughts deeply resonate deeply with what i have been experiencing here. His words are tender on the heart.

Fascinating from multiple perspectives--spiritual, cultural and political--for someone like me who's very interested in Latin America.

Considering that Putin is in the American press in some form every day this was quite a suspenseful page-turner. Masha Gessen is a really skilled reporter. With the turn of ever page I expected to read of her falling afoul of the KGB or having to flee the country. Not only is she a gifted writer but a truly brave and patriotic Russian woman. And the epilogue should give hope to all fighting tyranny where ever they are.

This book should be required reading for anyone interested in world affairs, or any Russophile. When I finished it, I wondered if the author was still alive! I did some research, and am glad to say that she is alive and well and living in the US. I'm sure she would not have been safe in Russia. Read it, and pray for the Russian people, and for the rest of us!

After reading Ester and Ruzya, which was a great picture of history, I got hooked on Masha Gessen. This book is a fascinating look into the rise of a Putin I knew nothing about. The book went through 2011, I hope she writes a sequel through today. The book left me with hope for the future of Russia and here he is still in power which is tragic.

Reading this book, I have learned a great deal about the history of Russia beginning with the post-war period when Putin first began his career as a low-level government bureaucrat, leading to what seems, given the circumstances of the time, a very improbable rise to the highest position in Russia, where he has since been firmly entrenched.Putin's early career seems very undistinguished, and revisiting the Yeltsin years and learning of how Putin kept a low profile in St. Petersburg, it is fascinating to follow how someone who was apparently completely off the radar screen ended up where he is now - and that he is so strongly in control, at that.As a bureaucrat in St. Petersburg, it seems that Putin (like many in Russia at the time) took advantage of the changing circumstances to fatten his own bank account. He also seems to have been deft in deciding who to support as various leaders came and went, without allowing himself to be taken down with them as they eventually fell from power. It led to his eventually being in a sense the last man standing, as the Russian party sought a leader to succeed Yeltsin. What is also illuminating is the brutality and viscousness of Putin throughout, something that I find particularly relevant given how our world looks today and the role that Putin has, more influential than anyone might have expected. In addition to telling the story of Putin's rise, I found the book to be very informative in reviewing the modern history of post-Soviet Russia, reminding me of many of the events of the past few decades as well as filling in many details I was not previously aware of.

Masha Gessen uses her talents as a reporter to describe the birth and death of Russian democracy. Her analysis, backed up with extensively documented research, comes to life through her first hand experiences of events. How fortunate we are to have someone as astute as she documenting this history.Unfortunately, her optimistic attitude about Russia after 2011 has proven to be disproved,

This is a very interesting book full of details about Russian politics I knew nothing of, and hence a real eye-opener. A bit dry in the beginning, but it certainly kept my attention. He's even scarier than I thought...

I am not a student of politics, in fact the topic usually bores or horrifies me of late. But I had to understand where this guy came from. Now that I know, I wish I was still ignorant. He and someone in our own US government have a great deal in common, and that is chilling. A must-read, no matter which party (or none) you support.

I have been telling people for 20 years that Vladimir Putin is the most dangerous man on the PLANET. I said that if I was in the same building with this man, I would feel his evil in my spirit before I would see his face. I had no inkling, when I said this years ago, that his malevolence would perniciously invade the democratic government of the United States of America!! Lord help us all!!Oh, this book is wonderful in the information it gives to readers in other countries who are unaware of the depths of this man's malicious depravity. Bravo to Ms. Gessen.

An outstanding job for the North. His clear style, balanced judgments and immense knowledge alone make the book worth reading. Briggs' love for Africa, and his deep respect for its people, inform and illuminate the whole experience. (Travel Africa)

About the Author

Philip Briggs has been exploring the highways, byways and backwaters of Africa since 1986, when he spent several months backpacking on a shoestring from Nairobi to Cape Town, and first visited Tanzania, bussing from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam then catching the Tazara Railway to Zambia. He has returned to Tanzania numerous times, among other things to research and author the first Bradt Guide to Tanzania in 1992/3, as well as all seven subsequent editions. Tanzania aside, he has visited more than two dozen African countries in total and written about most of them for specialist travel and wildlife magazines BBC Wildlife, Travel Africa and Wanderlust. He still spends at least four months on the road every year, usually accompanied by his wife, the travel photographer Ariadne Van Zandbergen, and spends his rest of the time battering away at a keyboard in the sleepy South African coastal village of Wilderness.Chris McIntyre went to Africa in 1987, after reading Physics at Queen's College, Oxford. He taught with VSO in Zimbabwe for almost three years and travelled extensively, before writing his first guidebook in 1990. He has since written Bradt guides to Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, and co-authored (with his wife, Susan) the last four editions of Bradt's Zanzibar guide – the latest of which is being thoroughly revised at the same time as this book. Chris now runs specialist tour operator Expert Africa, where he leads a team of dedicated Africa addicts who provide impartial advice and organise great safaris to Africa, including Tanzania. This Bradt guide has tons of very specific, useful information. It’s well-organized by individual locations within northern Tanzania. Very helpful to read before our trip, and in fact I plan to bring the book along, since there is a lot of material included about conditions, highlights, flora and fauna in many of the places we will visit.

I loved this book. Lots of good information, including some history and animal photos.

Useful for planning and a good reference guide.

I only used the sections for the areas I traveled to and found them helpful. I used the animal and bird photos to help me identify them.

Fantastic book. So useful during our safari

Well written and informative.

This guide covers what is most needed for å great safari through the most important national parks in Tanzania.
