I am completely ignorant of all things soccer and my daughter is especially interested in all things futbol. This book was really helpful to read with her to understand the different formations, different strategies, teams and leagues. It really helped her through having a soccer ignorant dad, and it helped me to gain appreciation for the game. Highly recommended.

For anyone who is new to soccer or wants a complete understanding of the entire game from history to strategy, rules, culture etc. this is like the complete story of and dictionary of soccer. I paged thru it several times in a store before purchasing it and I am getting more from reading it than I did just paging thru it in the store.

Got interested in the Premier League a few years ago and quickly realized I don't know much of anything about the game. This is a basic overall look at football and will help the new or casual fan enjoy what I have come to appreciate as a fast paced dynamic sport. So if you are like me and lost interest in American football, give World football a go. Now quick explain what "offsides" is?

It's a very detailed book, covering a lot of information-- this is its strength and weakness-- you may want to read something a little simpler as an introduction to the sport, and then move on to a book like this. There is more in the book re the sport internationally as opposed to US/MLS. Also, it covers very little on women's playing. Overall, a solid book, however.

Book bought for a 3rd grade student I was mentoring at our local elementary who has a tremendous interest in soccer. He just loved the book, the illustrations, and the information provided about soccer.

I'm a newbie to the world of soccer - when I was a kid soccer was played, if at all, by kids that couldn't play baseball. I've gotten into the game because of the Fox Soccer network. This is a great book - particularly for we Americans that weren't raised with the "beautiful game". If you want to get into the game this is the introduction you need. Clear, concise, and worth the price.

Gave this as a birthday gift for my 14 year old, Soccer loving son. As expected from DK Publishing, the book is chocked full of beautiful Photos and Illustrations. Comprehensive and accurate. Well written too. A must for any interested in true Islam

I have had this book many times and I've given this book to others. A great book to understanding Islam.

This is not a bad book if you realize its inherent limitations, which may not be immediately obvious to the untrained observer.First of all, the title is misleading; it should be called "Know your Shiite Islam." I have nothing against Shiites - far from it, I think that they are a valid and necessary manifestation of that sea of spirituality known as Islam - but calling this book "Know your Islam" is like calling a book on Lutheranism "Know your Christianity."Secondly, I suspect that the book was primarily designed for people from a Shiite Islamic background who for one reason or another have become secularized, either due to long residence in the West or because they received a Westernized education. Seen from this point of view the book fulfills a useful niche.But for the average Westerner the book is a bit of a chore to understand without some experience of Islam on the ground. Be advised.

I have read this book perhaps over 50 times and have enjoyed it everytime! This book is intended for those who practice Shiaism and is a great insight to those of other sects and denominations to get a glimps at the core values that surround Shiaism. This book is not making any attempts to focus on Sunni practices, it is clearly a Shia book containg prescribed methodologies for Shias. I cannot read Arabic fluently so the translations and Roman-English make this book very useful. This book is simple to read and well-rounded without getting too focused on theory and history. It sticks to the basics like how to pray, fast, pay alms, ect. I have had previous editions of this book. The reading is simple enough for a second/third grader to understand.

Boy, was it fun to go back in time and view through old photographs what Atlanta really looked like beginning with the Civil War. Let me remind you that it wasn't much, especially when the town was names "Terminus." And when the Yankees finished burning it to the ground with the exception of one square mile that Sherman spared, what was left for picking was plucked by the carpetbaggers.And everything seemed to emanate along Ponce De Leon Avenue, Piedmont and Peachtree Avenues. I was raised in Atlanta between 1948 and 1954 before I returned to Athens Town for the world's finest education at The University of Georgia. I knew where the Atlanta Crackers played baseball, where the fine Georgia Tech teams spent their time on beautiful Atlanta fall afternoons, I could find the Varsity just by following my nose, and Rich's was always my store of choice for purchasing anything at any time that could be bought. The Fox was a standout in my mind, the trolley bus service in all directions, the Brookwood Train Station at the intersection of the Expressway and Peachtree Street yet much of the materials discussed and photographs presented on Atlanta Ponce De Leon Avenue had long past into the memory of what was once the Ole South.I'm proud to own and have read this book. It gives my memory roots and allows me to remember all those happy times I spent as a youth in Atlanta, GA along Ponce De Leon Avenue. I can still see the train tracks running across center field where the Crackers Played and the Shriners' Parade on Thanksgiving Day when the Georgia Bullpups would square off against the Baby Yellow Jackets. I remember pulling Coach Bobby Dodd's golf clubs at the Ansley Country Club and a wonderful steak at Bill Daley's Red Barn. And to think that it all began in and around Atlanta's Ponce De Leon Avenue. I can believe that.

This particular book has delighted me. I grew up in this neighborhood and the author has researched her subject well and presents the information in a very interesting way. This particular neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia is experiencing a rapid transformation with exciting new projects such as the beltline for walkers and bikers that goes completely around Atlanta and passes the revitalization of the old Sear's building into shops, a restaurant court and apartments. The book provides a fascinating well documented history of this area of the city of Atlanta that rises again like the Phoenix bird that is its symbol. It makes a good read even for those not familiar with the city itself.

This was a quick, entertaining, and informative read. I suspect the book will be more interesting to those with a strong familiarity with Ponce and the city in general. As an Atlanta native, I enjoyed learning more about the history behind the places I pass on a daily basis. Ponce is constantly evolving, and even in the six years since publication, a lot of new development (and re-development) has occurred. Perhaps an updated edition will be warranted in the near future.

I can't praise this book highly enough. The author manages to pack every sentence with fascinating facts and anecdotes, and does it in such a conversational way that it feels like you're just chatting with your girl friend over drinks. The details are vivid, and when describing certain locations she gives current landmarks so you can visualize exactly where she's talking about. Very engaging and actually made me giddy to read such an intimate history about a place that has always been a part of my life. It was like finding an antique family diary in an attic.If you're looking for a good read, absolutely get this book!

Wonderful book for a native Atlantan. If you have family history here or have lived in the city for a long time, this is a perfect book to add to your collection of Atlanta books. It has a great history of a small (but important) area of the city. I enjoyed reading it.

Awesome book. Being from Georgia it's great reading and seeing the history of the buildings that are so easily taken for granted. This book is highly recommended for anyone who has traveled Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Sharon Foster Jones has taken a fresh approach to the history and developmemt of a street. A street that became a Grand Avenue that is a living history of the development of the east side of Atlanta in particular and the city as a whole in general. She really brings alive the charactors of the early leaders, settlers, developers, visionaries, and families. She does not shy away from describing the seemy underbelly either. I highly recommend this book.

Deftly using the graphic novel format to make the subject matter accessible to a general audience, Rius wittily and intelligently demonstrates how Marx can help us gain a better understanding of the world we live in today.If you are new to the 'Beginners' series, you are in for a treat. Rius playfully uses a number of nicknames for Marx including 'Charlie', 'Charles', 'Herr Marx' and so on. The illustrations frequently make use of side characters who pose the sort of humble questions that the average person might think about asking the autor, if s/he could. Written in the mid 1970s, Rius does not anticipate the end of really existing communism in the USSR nor the rise of post-Marxism as inspiration to the anti- globalization and Occupy Wall Street movements that have risen up against neoliberalism. Yes, Marx is very much alive and well today but this particular 'Beginners' book remains stuck many decades in the past. This is too bad because on the one hand, a great deal has been learned about how much mischief is possible when good ideas are appropriated for all the wrong reasons; while on the other hand, Marx's thoughts about social and economic justice could not be more relevant and timely to us today.On that point, an update might well include Charles Darwin's profound influence on Marx, who is another great intellectual who is absent from Rius' work. In fairness to Rius however, the Darwin/Marx connection and the implications for the environmental movement has been a more recent discovery popularized by the excellent work of John Bellamy Foster (see Marx's Ecology: Materialism and Nature) among others. With environmental issues such as climate change posing ever great challenges, a 'green' Marx who is able to connect capitalism with the explotation of nature has never been more important.Still, for anyone looking for a brief introduction to (most of) the Western thinkers and philosophers who influenced Marx; a look into the private life of Marx; as well as an overview of Marx's central ideas; then this book is a great place to start. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I bought "Marx for Beginners", a cartoon introduction to Marx written by Mexican political cartoonist Eduardo del Rio ("Rius"), not so much because I needed an introduction to Marxism but to see how the theory can be summarized as pithily and shortly as possible. And indeed, Del Rio has done an admirable job on this. The reader is guided through all aspects of Marx' work as well as biography, even including an extraordinarily rapid overview of the history of philosophy and of the early socialists. Of the economic theories of Marx only the basics are explained, but nevertheless sufficient to get the point of what Marx tried to show in "Capital", if not how he proved it.As far as the political side goes, Del Rio usefully emphasizes the limitations of social-democracy and its inability to get beyond the exploitation of capitalism, as well as many quotations from Marx showing how he opposed this tendency. As criticisms, one could remark that Engels gets short shrift in this book - admittedly it is titled "Marx for beginners", but one wonders why not "Marx & Engels for beginners"? Also, Del Rio seems to take the connection between Marx and Lenin as a natural progression for granted, even including in the (otherwise very handy) vocabulary of terms under Marxism-Leninism: "theory of the proletarian liberation movement". Hardly something uncontested.The drawings are clear and funny, if a bit on the juvenile side compared to the content that he is trying to convey. This might have a good effect on younger people reading it though, making it possibly useful as a high school text on Marx, if there ever is a capitalist country brave enough to allow it. Due to the requirements of Del Rio's purpose, some of the summaries of earlier thinkers are so simple as to be simplistic, but this can't be helped. Overall, a practical and well-done introduction to Marx for the complete novice.

I usually really like the "Beginners" series but this one felt way too simplistic about Marx. I felt as though the reader barely learned anything about Marx's actual philosophy from this book. Some of what the author said seemed to have their own interpretation as well, rather than straight-forward saying what Marx said.

Nowadays, a lot of the versions of Marx's "Manifesto of the Communist Party" come with about 100 pages of analysis and attempts to decode Karl's thinking. What they should come with is this book. "Marx for Beginners" is a wonderful way for anyone who wishes to study Marx's writing to get their feet wet, and for the experienced Marxist reader, it provides a bit of humor to the writings and gives ways to explain Marx to other people. Even though it is a cartoon book, the illustrations are not pivotal to the writing. They seem to serve mostly as filler, just brackets to attach speech balloons to. But what is in the speech balloons is where the brilliance of the book comes through. Rius gives a brief history of Marx's life, a rundown of philosophy that helped form Marxist thought and then an analysis of the Manifesto. The best feature is when a complex item is discussed, Rius will state the "academic" definition, but then give a practical real-world example of that concept. He also includes a useful glossary of many common terms that come up in discussions of Marxism. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone studying Marx. The only downside is that Rius's writing is very pro-Marxist which may repel non-Marxists from seeing the book's utility. However, most people who purchase this are probably already pretty pro Marx .

Absolutely wonderful! An informative graphic novel (cartoon book) about history and politics that is accurate, understandable, and very funny.

Great and fun way to get some historical perspective about Charles Marx.
