I bought this for my 11 year old grandson. I think he is a little young for the story. Some of the content makes me uncomfortable for a child his age. I think I would have waited until he was a little older. But overall the books are an excellent read, and hopefully will make our younger generation think about their lives here and in eternity.

My daughter loves these books! They are age appropriate for a 9 year old. Very well written and interesting!

The A-10 has had such a huge cult following that I'm rather surprised it took this long for Haynes to publish a book devoted to it. I've enjoyed Steve Davies other Haynes books and have always had a bit of a "soft spot" for this mean, ugly beast of a plane. The result is a fairly solid reference book that's let down somewhat by the limitations of the Haynes format.If you've owned any of Haynes other modern combat aircraft manuals, you know what to expect. There are introductory chapters describing the plane's design and development, the different variants, operators (mostly a list of squadrons), and a brief overview of the A-10 at war. The second half of the book is more technical in tone, with chapters on the aircraft's anatomy (flight control, hydraulic systems, landing gear, etc.), the TF34 engines, and weapons and sensors. We get a chapter on flying the A-10 over Kosovo in the FAC role in 1999, written largely by Col. Phil Haun, and a brief chapter on maintaining the aircraft. Finally, there are a couple of appendixes, including a complete list of production numbers. The text is accompanied by a large number of excellent color photographs, which should prove useful to anyone super-detailing their model, along with technical diagrams from the original manuals.Although this is yet another enjoyable "workshop manual," I'm starting to feel the novelty of the Haynes format is finally starting to wear off. I've followed the series for years, and I've noticed that many of the recent books have been rather cold and slickly produced. Considering how durable, (relatively) cheap to operate, and rough-and-tumble the A-10 is, you'd think there'd be a more about maintaining the aircraft than a few pages near the end. Even the famous GAU-8 Avenger only receives a couple pages here. I don't want to suggest this book is bad (it's actually fine the way it is), but I wish Haynes would start including a download code with their books so readers can access material that had to be edited out for reasons of space.Although it's obviously dated now, A-10 Thunderbolt II (Modern fighting aircraft), later incorporated into The Great Book Of Modern Warplanes, provides a more well-rounded insight into the early model A-10s, its weapons and avionics, and the tactics they would have used against Soviet armor. This book focuses largely on the 'C' model and is a fine update as such, but it's a little too slick and polished for a book on the A-10.

I've watched this plane fly over most of my adult life. I remember watching the guys practice over Ft. Leonard Wood while I was in basic training. The book is really great. I just wish it had pictures of the 2 seat model that they built. Also they include an Appendix of Production numbers but that could have been augmented with disposition (like listing ones that had been modified or were on display or ones that were written off. I look forward to getting the rest of this series. (Next one is SR-71).

Nothing is better than the A-10. Since I can't have an A-10, this is the next best thing. 3rd best is maybe getting a model.

Great book, love the Haynes approach, used their books for decades to work on cars.

Be wary of purchasing the international edition; I did and there we about 40 pages missing from the book - missing in the sense that I received a book in wonderful condition, no apparent damage anywhere, and the page numbers (and content) simply skip over two blocks of approximately 20 pages. This was a particularly painful realization for me because I needed the first of those two sections for my project.

The product description says "Same Contents as in US edition", however, this is emphatically NOT the case. About 40 pages are missing from the text. Be forewarned!

Many of the explanations used in the book were well written but a bit hard to understand. Equations jump out of nowhere without any elaboration and the problems asked at the end come with no supplement or explanation in the chapter to help you out. I mostly had to look up the subjects on wikipedia to really get a better understanding of much of the material. Although I acknowledge this to be a book for an upper division class, so I'm not too disappointed overall with it, seeing as how I've already taken the introductory course to material sciences and it was my fault for really forgetting the minor details needed to fully comprehend the subject.

Very high-quality book for anyone interested in getting a little further beyond the basic content taught in most introductory materials/structural materials course, recommended specifically by a UCSB materials professor held in high regard.

This textbook reads more like an encyclopedia than a normal textbook. The presentation of the material is very thorough and accurate yet assumes a reader more mature in the material. I am using the text in a materials behavior course as a senior in mechanical engineering and many of my classmates have come to similar conclusions. Both my professor for the course and another in the same field also agreed the text is probably better suited as a reference rather than a stand-alone teaching tool. Overall, excellent text but maybe more useful for a more learned reader than I.

Fracture mechanics in application is simple enough that it can be learned via wikipedia. Understanding it and the physical basis of the derivations - not so easy - but covered well in this great work. Well worth it for an older version.

We covered first 3 chapters. Prof basically just walked us through the book. Decent course. Easy to read and accessible from basically any background

I am happy with the quality and condition of the book and its pages, but when I received the book it had a plastic, sticky bookcover on it. It makes the book's hardcover look bubbly and used and I would prefer it not be on there, but if I take it off I'm pretty sure it will leave an unwanted residue. Oh well, I guess it will keep the actual cover in a nicer condition should I decide to sell it back later.

Mapping the Bones is a historical Holocaust novel by Jane Yolen. Jane used the story of Hansel and Gretel as a skeleton of her story. The children are lost in the woods and use pebbles to help them find their way in the forest. They come across a wicked witch in a House of Candy where they are threatened with the ovens. Jane Yolen masterfully used the story and her Holocaust research to develop a story which is based on stories she has read about and yet is completely different from those around her. She does not falter from telling the entire emotional instability of those in that time period nor does she falter when it comes to details of experiments. I would definitely recommend this book be used with students who have some knowledge of the Holocaust. I would not recommend it for elementary students; however, keep in mind that I am rather protective of their innocence and donâ€™t see Holocaust instruction being started earlier than 7th grade.

This young adult novel follows the terrible hardships Polish twins encounter during the Holocaust. The writing is evocative and sometimes graphic, so I would recommend for older teens and adults. An excellent read that gives readers much to think about.

My son read this for school and loved it. He is in 6th grade.

Chaim and Gittel are twins growing up in the Jewish ghetto of Lodz. Life becomes more and more dangerous for their family. Soon they must make a fateful decision to leave their home.Chaim rarely speaks more than a dozen words in a day, but he composes lyrical poems that help him process the brutality around him. Gittel is strong and practical and always seems to understand her twin.

Thank you to Jane Yolen, Goodreads, Penguin Teen and Philomel Books for an advanced uncorrected galley of Mapping the Bones. I received my copy of this book as a giveaway, and my honest review is not required.Normally a 413 (ish) page book takes me around 2 days to get through. This book however, took me a couple more days. It was a hard, albeit good read. The subject matter is a hard one to stomach.This fictional story based in 1940s during the Holocaust follows the life of 4 children, Chaim, Gittel, Sophie and Bruno.This book is basically split into 2 parts.The first half of the book is the story of the 4 children and how they were forced from their homes into a Polish Ghetto by the Nazis, where they lived in squalor waiting for their " wedding invitation" to relocate them once again and their escape to the Polish border.The second part of the book follows the childrens capture by German soldiers and their placement in a labor camp where the children try to survive unclean water, spoiled food and the inhumane experiments done by the Doctor. (The Doctor is modeled off of Dr Mengele)While it was a very good read there were parts that i could have done without. Throughout the book, Chaim doesn't speak due to a severe stutter and uses hand signs that only his sister knows to communicate, but is able to proficiently speak through poetry. Because of this there is quite a bit of randomly placed poetry. Bruno has a superiority complex, which renders him rather annoying. I am not certain this was not done purposefully. The way the children are written rather annoyed me, because i felt a bit of their story was added mush, that could have been left out.My general annoyance with the children did not take away from the book as a whole, as i still gave it 4 stars.There is minor graphic explanations of the experiments performed at the camp.Marketed as a Young Adult Fiction genre for ages 12-18, I felt uncomfortable reading parts at 36. I would allow and encourage my teenagers to read this book, but provide them with a word of caution.

I've had good luck with YA historical fiction books, this one included. I think adults may be missing out by not searching out some of them (BTW, I'm 76). The only things "missing" in YA books are cursing and sex. Overall, a great story. The reason not 5-stars is the hurry-up "Hollywood" ending.

We see their slow starvation, their escape into the woods, their parents making the hard choice to send them off. We see their imprisonment and near-death encounter as they are surrounded by death and pain.Gripping from start to finish, Mapping the Bones is a wonderful and terrible look into the Holocaust.

This book appeared in our school book fair. I didn't want to take it from a student, so I waited to get it later. It was so unexpected in that you begin knowing how the family came to be in the Ghetto and then you end knowing how it ends up. Many times, these stories end with the end of the war and then nothing. This book went further. I was very invested in the characters and would highly recommend this book. I wish our children knew more about WWII. A really great read!

I understand that it is an author trying to give his mentor/inspiration his fair credit. It is written like a "Dummies" book-using easy language for the layperson. I like the book-it explains the history of hypnosis and why he's telling you about it-which makes the chapter make sense to read. The rest is cool-I feel like I am really getting the same lesson as if I were sitting in a room watching someone do the steps. I guess some ppl are turned off by the mentor tribute, and the way the author explains why some medical professionals want to keep it for themselves. The chiropractic analogy explains it well-and I, for one, am glad I am getting this perspective. I am hoping to one day train in the art and become a master myself!

To all graphic designers, this book is a must have and read. Very important information how to layout your work and why it needs to be in a certain way. I was very confused with grid systems, but this book really explains the root of the system and how it is important to follow it.Graphic design is a visual communication and it needs to be understood by viewers and grid will help you to understand how to arrange your art work and manage them and organizing them between typography and graphics.

As an interaction designer for a major tech company, I am always looking to learn new things. I bought this book due to a recommendation from a co-worker and it did not disappoint. It is filled with diagrams, pictures, and everything you need to know about designing for the grid. Be forewarned however, half the book is in German and half is in English so really it'is half as big as it looks.If you know someone who is looking to start learning design, I would highly recommend this book to get started. It includes a lot of basics while also expanding on some intermediate ideas.

This book is freakin awesome. It was recommended to me by a talented graphic designer who said I wouldn't regret picking this up, and I certainly do not. After reading this book, my portfolio looks amazing and I feel much more confident in presenting my work. This book was the answer to all my misguided wanderings.

This is a great book, a classic, and a must read for any graphic designer. Regardless of where you are as a designer, this information is either new to you or you've learned some variation of it somewhere. At my work place we don't do much page layout, but I wish we did. Although after reading it, I realize this type of grid system works for one page designs as well as multi-page. At first the instructions and the whole idea sounds a bit rigid but as you continue reading you begin to understand the infinite possibilities it gives you. Nowadays there's definitely a huge misconception about "Breaking the Grid". New designers and even some seasoned designers misinterpret that statement as "No grid at all". I'm not against breaking the grid, but there has to be an existing grid before you can break the grid, otherwise what are you breaking? So if you want to break the grid, you must still learn the grid. Margins don't qualify as a grid system. Another misconception is that you have to break the grid to create dynamic. That is also false. There is a such thing as dynamic use of the grid, and this classic book proves it. I love the grid and after reading this book, I recognize it more as I look at great design work. The layout system is such a fundamental part of being a graphic designer. Make sure you're making every effort to improve all the necessary skills. If you're looking for an improvement in your layout skills, read this book. It will stand the test of time for ages to come.

This is a must for all designers. It is a deep dive into understanding the grid system and typography and how to use them effectively to solve mass information layout. If you're looking for trendy design examples, look elsewhere, if you're looking to understand the principles of good design, it is a perfect.

I'm surprised I hadn't heard more about this book when it first released. I preorder in paperback because it was only $5 and really enjoyed the entire story. The first 50 pages were slow only because it took sometime to get used to all the names and who was who but after that the story quickly escalated and you're caught up in a world of jinni, prince & princess and wishes. I loved Najwa's story and her admiration of the prince from afar. I thought we got a true glimpse of Zayele on the beach with Atish, hopefully we get to see more of her true self in The Blind Wish. I love the magical world created and I'm looking forward to finding out more in book two. I'm hoping for more romance and the war to be settled.

On my quest for diversity in literature, I discovered a blog post about a white woman named Amber Lough who grew up in the Middle East and Japan, and then wrote a fantasy book about characters from that area, called The Fire Wish. Could a middle-aged white woman really do justice to a book about Arab teenagers in the desert? She seemed to have done her research, and I was willing to give it a shot. After all, who doesnâ€™t like a book about genies? Djinn? Jinn? In this book: Jinn. Well, even if you arenâ€™t a big fan of the topic, I strongly suggest you give this book a chance.The Plot: Zayele is a headstrong young teenager living in a small village three daysâ€™ travel away from Baghdad, in a time long before electronics. She is chosen, against her will, to be a princeâ€™s bride in an act of good faith between the tribe and the palace. Zayele is desperate to get out of this arrangement, even considering running away with her blind younger brother, but eventually is forced to make the journey along with her older cousin Rahela, who is terrified of the jinn, having survived a jinn attack when Zayele was born.Najwa is a slightly timid teenaged jinni, just learning about her own abilities in her underground world. On one of her spy tests it turns out that she is the only jinni â€“ anywhere â€“ who can get past the human palaceâ€™s jinn wards and enter. She also discovers some very important information about a young girl who has been chosen to be the first bride of the younger prince (sound familiar?). Wanting to know more about this princess, Najwa breaks the rules and uses her invisibility spell to visit her. Then she gets caught. By the future princess.Zayele is delighted to have caught herself a real, live jinni, and demands a wish from her. Najwa is forced to grant Zayeleâ€™s wish to have Najwa take her place as the princess, but instead of returning home, Zayele finds herself taking Najwaâ€™s place in the underground jinn caverns. Suddenly, neither girl is having nearly as much fun as she thought she would, and both must find a way to escape their situations without being caught. Najwa, with only the jinn-loathing Rahela as her ally, cannot wish herself out of her situation, and Zayele has quite a bit of difficulty pretending to be a jinni when she is not. With the impending royal marriage and both the jinn and humans on the verge of war, it is a race against time to set things right.The Verdict: Holy wow, I am a little embarrassed at how quickly I stalked Amber Loughâ€™s twitter, tumblr, and personal website to find out when the next book comes out. The Fire Wish is told from alternating points of view, which made it a little difficult to follow at times, but even that could not slow down my voracious appetite to know what happened to these two girls. I wish (haha, get it?) I could say more about the plot of this book, but Iâ€™d be giving away some major spoilers, and this is one book I do NOT want to spoil for anyone.

I'm not a big fan of books written in the first person. And I'm especially not a big fan of two main characters who have the exact same personality being written in the first person. The beginning of this book had me completely confused. I wondered why they sometimes called her Najwa, and other times they called her Zayele, and why the writer kept switching back from her being trained as a Jinni and her being at home wondering why the Viziar has come calling. Until I got to the part where Zayele was shipped off to Baghdad, I did not even realize these were two different people. And what do you know, when the two meet on the barge to Baghdad, low and behold, they look exactly alike. So, I have to ding the book a couple of stars for not being clear, and for writing both characters in the first person in a way that just caused confusion.Otherwise, the storyline was okay, but I doubt I will read any following books in the series.

A fun take on well-known arabian folklore. I like it:}

Visually rich, lyrical in spots and filled with exciting, breath-holding moments. It's "The Prince and the Pauper" set in ancient Bagdad, but in this case the pauper is a Jinn. A wonderful read.

I really enjoyed the read. I had a hard time putting it down. I had never read anything about jinnis before and it was a breath of fresh air.

So so so so good! The audio book was great as well and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one.

Predictable but interesting enough to keep you reading.
