Review

"A splendid book."---Carol Tavris, Times Literary Supplement"All too timely."---Carol Tavris, Wall Street Journal"[A] slim but sharp volume on problems women face in the architecture profession. . . . [A] concise, accessible book." (Publishers Weekly)"An excellent introduction to the recurring question that serves as the volume's title. . . . Compact but thorough." (Library Journal)"Where Are the Women Architects? . . . explores the reasons why female designers have struggled to gain a foothold in the profession, despite recent efforts and campaigns, and why the attrition of women in the profession continues. . . . From a look at Mattel's architecture Barbie, an intervention in popular culture, to an exploration of the campaign to pressure the Pritzker committee to give equal recognition to Denise Scott Brown (partner and wife of Pritzker laureate Robert Venturi) [Stratigakos] explores numerous facets of architecture's gender imbalance."---Patrick Sisson, Curbed"The book is an excellent primer if you already are concerned about the topic--but especially if you are not."---Anthony Paletta, Urban Land"Stratigakos does not analyze inequalities from afar. She documents interventions and, in some cases, she is among the main instigators. Though Stratigakos is an academic architectural historian, her own agency is a wonderful departure from the typical academic's distance from their subject."---Raj Mankad, OffCite.org, "‘Male-dominated' is an understatement in architecture. . . . In this slim chronicle, architectural historian Despina Stratigakos incisively catalogues the setbacks." (Books in Brief)"The insidious and hidden nature of . . . internalized bias is perhaps the most compelling reason why all architects--especially those that don't think that gender equity affects them--ought to examine this issue in greater depth to see if they may unwittingly be taking part. Many architects strive to create socially-minded physical places that encourage access for all. It's imperative to ensure that the same kind of equity is being built into the profession itself."---Elsa Lam, Canadian Architect"[A] concise, highly readable book. . . . The first chapter, in essence a history of women in architecture, gives an illuminating and detailed account of events in the US."---Flora Samuel, Times Higher Education

From the Back Cover

"This important and sharp critique makes a convincing argument about the status of women and the deep-seated gender issues in the profession of architecture. Accessibly written, it will be incredibly useful to readers inside and outside of the field. Despina Stratigakos demonstrates how far things have progressed--and how far we have yet to go."--Lori A. Brown, Syracuse University School of Architecture"Despina Stratigakos unravels the stultifying, appeasing mantra that ‘things are not that bad anymore' when it comes to the place of women in the profession of architecture. Clearly, she shows, they are that bad. Where Are the Women Architects? is timely and significant."--Cathrine Veikos, California College of the Arts

This book is topical, fact-based, unbiased, and very well written. In clear language, without exaggerating the issues or being inflammatory, it gives us just the facts we need to understand, and it does so in a way that is engaging and entertaining. I write from the perspective of a father of an architect daughter who works for a high-end NYC firm. I hope the times are changing, and this book shows us the direction for change.

Super!

nice!

Not only informative, but a witty and engaging read.

Finally there is a concise narrative that describes the history of women in architecture! But more important, this book eloquently describes the history of women in professional life, through the lens of the architectural profession. A must read for feminists everywhere!!!!

Important research is being done on the lack of women in architecture and it is time that it the industry recognizes that there is a problem. Ms. Stratigakos' work goes a long way in ensuring that we are armed with the data to go along with our personal experiences.

This story is kind of silly, kind of sad, kind of heart-warming, and somewhat thoughtful. It's a story about a giraffe that doesn't know how to dance and is always being made fun of by other animals at the annual animal dance party. The giraffe is very sad about his awkwardness and embarrassed about his lack of skills until he meets a grasshopper (cricket maybe?) who basically tells him that he just needs to find a different song to dance to. When Gerald the Giraffe listens to the sounds of nature, he begins to sway and move gracefully to the sounds and figures out he really can dance. He just needed some encouragement and some different music. It's a well-read story with page turning sounds and enough vocal expression that you're not bored when listening to it. My daughter and I like this one the best of all the read-along books we've purchased lately. I like it because it tells a story about how it's ok to be different, how each of us has something to celebrate, and how sometimes what makes you different actually makes you special and incredible. My 4 year old daughter likes it because it's a positive message and because it rhymes and has good background music to listen to.Well done.

This book is delightful and my children enjoy having me read it to them. However, I was not happy with the CD portion. The CD skipped the very first time we played it. I ordered two other CD books from Scholastic Audio Books at the same time and it turns out all 3 of them had defects with the CD. I wish I could give the product an excellent rating, but the skipping CD's leave me annoyed. I am keeping the books because now my children have read them and want to keep them. Instead I will make a note to NEVER buy another book CD from Scholastic Audio Books. The other books were Duck on a Bike and How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon.

My son loves this book! It is even more exciting with the audio cd. You know how sometimes the narrator makes the story suck? Not this guy, he has a great animated voice that your kid would love.

My 3yr old daughter absolutely LOVES this book. We read all day long. This CD & book is on repeat in the car. Over & over & over.

My kids love this book. My only issue was that the cd didn’t work right away. I took it right out of the package and put it in the player but didn’t work. I had to clean it a few times even after noticing that there were no smudge marks.

Daughter falls asleep to this nightly. The mans voice who reads this is nice and soothing for her. Great purchase.

I ordered this set for my daycare it came with the cd not working. I exchanged the item waited another week... guess what the new cd does not work!!! I have 12 kids that continue to wait to have this book available in our listening center.

I got this for my 3 year old daughter to listen to at bedtime. She has taken to listening to stories on CD while she is falling asleep. It is one trick in many we have tried to get her to stay in her room after we put her to bed. She really likes this story a lot, though she does say the crickets sometimes keep her awake. I think the story is sweet with a good lesson behind it, and the narration and music is really nice.

Janet Mock came out publicly in a 2011 Marie Claire article. Now she’s back, telling her story again—her way. Mock’s New York Times Bestseller, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, is a fascinating look at a myriad of topics including gender and gender identity, sex and sexuality, and self-revelation through the lens of a trans woman. Janet Mock has been hailed as the “token” trans woman. She’s educated, articulate, and breathtakingly beautiful. She’s the kind of trans woman that makes straight folks comfortable, but she is quick to point out that her experience is not the reality for many trans persons. Redefining Realness not only sheds light on Mock’s fascinating journey to womanhood, but also the plight of trans women, particularly trans women of color. As a cisgender gay male, I thought Mock’s story would be foreign to me. I couldn’t have been more wrong. In fact, there were remarkable similarities. We both experienced policing of our physical appearance at a very early age. We both were estranged from our mothers, yet held tight that she’d come and rescue us. We both had no expectation of our fathers, yet held our mothers to unattainable standards we created in our own minds. Beyond how the book personally resonated with me, Redefining Realness is masterfully written prose that will speak to anyone looking to gain insight on the trans experience, or simply live in their own truth. I applaud Mock for sharing her personal narrative at the risk of judgment and ridicule. As she says, “There’s nothing more powerful than truly being and loving yourself.”

"Redefining Realness" stirred up memories of my freshman year in college. During the spring semester, my English professor introduced the class to books by authors of subjects many of us had only heard of, but never even remotely experienced. Authors like E. Lynn Harris. His book "Just As I Am" sparked a fire in us that made us trample over other students hanging out in the quad, just to make it to the classroom in time to dissect the more than 380 pages of fictional sizzle. As we talked about the book and the issues it brought to the forefront, our discussions were filled with joy, anger, curiosity, and just a flat-out appreciation of Harris' writing skills. This is how I felt while reading "Redefining Realness" - even before completing the first chapter. With my excitement level on "high", I wanted to immediately hightail it to someone's book club and talk about what I had just read! This book is awesome. Janet Mock takes readers on the journey of her life as a trans woman of color - a journey that was as foreign to me as a map of the streets of Djibouti City. I honestly did not realize that the lives of transgender people were that intense (especially poor trans people of color). Thanks to media portrayals of trans men and women over the years, I likened them to "drag queens" and reduced their lives to simply being "people who like to play dress-up." To me, a person was either gay, lesbian, or straight. Nothing else. However, Mock's experience, passion, rawness, statistics, and transparency, taught me that the world does not fit neatly into compartments."Redefining Realness" evoked thought, compassion, and awareness - everything I expected based on the title of the book, as well as the publicity which has surrounded it over the last few months. I thoroughly enjoyed Mock's storytelling (story within a story), particularly the imagery she used to tell her story. Much like her "shero" Zora Neale Hurston, Mock's descriptive writing engaged all of the standard senses and more. I felt the winds and humidity of Oahu. I saw Charles, Sr.'s gold tooth with the Cowboys' shout-out. I touched Keisha's hair right along with Jamie. I heard conversations in Hawaiian pidgen on the streets as Janet and Wendi pooched. I tasted grandma's gumbo while eavesdropping on family gossip. (The pop music references sprinkled throughout the book made it even more "real" for me because I remember where I was when all of those songs debuted!)On top of all of this, Mock made me laugh. Her quick wit provided a much-welcomed intermission from a stressful and, at times, unbelievable read. It was good to laugh to keep from crying. However, even in comedy, she managed to teach lessons. I'll never confuse a "drag queen" for a trans woman again because I now know "a drag queen is part-time for showtime. A trans woman is all the time." Love it!"Redefining Realness" is a masterpiece, not only because of the content, but because of Mock's incredible writing skills. I appreciate her for using her unique story to inform, chastise, correct, and commend. That's what real women do.I look forward to more work from Mock in any genre.

As a politically aware trans lady who came out in the mid 2000s, this is the only trans memoir I've ever read that I never once wanted to throw across the room. Even though she's talking about her personal experiences, there's always a sharp political lens on it.If you've been in radical anti-racist/abolitionist trans spaces for over a decade, there's probably not a lot *new* in the analysis, but if you haven't there probably is--and regardless it's all solid. OTOH for me there was something really healing in hearing her talk about personal experiences that often get left out of political discussions. Also: her narration is great.

For all of its raw emotion, Mock's memoir is both powerful and inspiring. She unflinchingly captures painful memories and experiences that are especially necessary to discuss in today's social and political climate. Hers is a strong voice with an important message that we should all listen to.I recently picked up the book after seeing a clip of Mock on The Daily Show in the summer of 2017. I expected to find it a window into an experience and a life totally unfamiliar to my own but found it to reflect a human experience that a reader of any community could empathize with.I would recommend this book to anyone who even remotely thinks they would want to read it. I think a lot of social problems today boil down to ignorance and Mock shines a light onto the intimate details of her own life that can illuminate those areas many consider dark.Despite all the darkness in humanity which Mock reveals in her memoir, what is most important is that she focuses on the light and looks for the best in people, always choosing love over hate. This is the type of realness the rest of us should aspire to.

The Outsider: A Novel, by Stephen King

Review

Praise for The Outsider: "A juicy tale that plays at the forefront of our current phobias... [The Outsider] will remind readers of King's early novel It." — Kirkus Reviews “What begins as a manhunt for an unlikely doppelgänger takes an uncanny turn into the supernatural. King’s skillful use of criminal forensics helps to ground his tale in a believable clinical reality where the horrors stand out in sharp relief.” —Publishers Weekly“Absolutely riveting. . . another shockingly dark book—perfect for longtime fans, of whom there are, well, zillions.” —Booklist“There’s plenty of shadowy, wormy supernatural goings-on in Stephen King’s new novel The Outsider. Yet the most unsettling stuff — that which will leave you uncomfortable when you sit and devour this first-rate read — probes the monstrous side of human nature.” —Brian Truitt, USA Today"Do yourself a favor and read the book.” —Associated Press“An It for the Trump era…remarkable and deeply pleasurable.” —Ryan Vlastelica, The AV Club "Here’s to mutant rats in the basement and Mexican myths; here’s to the strange and to Stephen King. Still inspiring." —Victor LaValle, New York Times Book Review"King is arguably as much an American icon as the ’68 Fastback or a classic red and white Plymouth Fury. All of these glories are on full display in his latest mystery-horror hybrid...you’re in for one hell of a ride.”  —Karin Slaughter, The Washington Post“King appears to be on a hot streak, that he extends with The Outsider. Big, complex and inventive, it’s a well-honed continuation of his interest in the intersection of crime and horror fiction, demonstrating his consummate skill with both.” —Michael Berry, The Portland Press Herald"Every time Stephen King writes another book, I worry. Has he gone to the horror well too often? Will it be as good as It or Dolores Claiborne or Doctor Sleep or any of his 50-plus other titles? Luckily, his scary ideas continue to flow unfettered from his mind to the pages, most recently in The Outsider...masterful.” —Amanda St. Amand, St. Louis Post Dispatch

Either King is getting more comfortable with his ability to draw us in with a minium of words, or he's got a much better editor than he did at the start. I can't quite pinpoint when his verbosity stopped, but it's a welcome change. This is more in the Mr. Mercedes universe than the old Derry/Castle Rock/Things that go bump in the night universe of old. It starts out being a perplexing murder mystery, and it's not until later in the story that supernatural elements start creeping in. By that time, though, you're so involved in the story that the supernatural elements seem plausible...and then they start making sense. As the book quotes, Arthur Conan Doyle (via Sherlock Holmes) said "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." King manages to eliminate the impossible, slowly yet surely.I've started measuring how good I think a mystery/horror book is by how tense I get when I read it. I was extremely tense reading this one, wondering just what the solution was going to be.I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoyed the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, or 11/22/63.

Damn you, Stephen King, Damn you to Hell! I had no sleep, the battery died on my Kindle, and my dog discovered me crouched in a corner gibbering like a mad monkey. The horror. The madness. Thank you, the one and only King, for giving me night terrors once again. Now, where's the coffee...

I loved this book! It’s always a sign of a good book when I can’t predict the plot. This book had me on the edge of my seat and made me feel a range of emotions from anger, sadness, and joy. I don’t like to include spoilers, so I won’t. This book was more old school Stephen King to me, and I liked that.

This book should have come with a trigger warning. I understand that it is a crime/supernatural novel but no where in the preview of the book did it mention murder, molestation, rape and sexual violence towards a child. Wish I would have known about that before spending money on this.

When Stephen King "brings his A game," he can't be beat (at least in my opinion). And he definitely did in this book.I loved this story from the first page to the end. The plotline, the in-depth characters, the dialogue he does so well - loved it and didn't want it to end.A young boy is (beyond) brutally murdered in Flint City, Oklahoma (not Maine - can you believe it?). The police are so sure they know who did this atrocity that they don't even take the man they arrest in for preliminary questioning. Instead they very publicly arrest him and THEN find out he has an ironclad alibi. Really. This starts out kind of like a "locked door mystery" and then segues into a creepy, scary horror tale.Highly recommended - this is Stephen King at his best.

When I post reviews of Stephen King, I quite often rate it at five stars and, consequently, many people assume I’m just another King groupie. If you are one of these, you might still find a reason to appreciate my take on this latest work by the master of horror, because this story goes into something much more than just horror. Be sure though that you are ready to journey through shock and awe as only Stephen King can guide you.In searching my book of quotations, searching for just the right thought, I came up with this nugget of wisdom by the master of horror:The trust of the innocent is the liar's most useful tool - Stephen KingDemakis, Joseph. The Ultimate Book of Quotations (p. 490). Unknown. Kindle Edition.BLUSH FACTOR: This is Stephen King, so, of course, there are ample profanities. As for me, I wouldn’t change a word, but that’s just me.Reviewers and readers of Stephen King fall into three categories. My target audience is that segment that wants to know if this novel is little more than a re-hash of one of his other novels, or something fresh and titillating. As for myself, I am close to being a dedicated fan, so keep that in mind as you proceed. The Outsider blends typical King with the same sort of plot as his Bill Hodges series and some of that exhibited in the book 11-23-63. Where it differs markedly from both is the King gets us inside the headEXCERPTNOTE: I took the below excerpt from about the 15% mark, so don’t get the impression that this is a spoiler. What you’re reading here may, or may not shed light on the direction of the story. It is provided only so readers can get a feel for the language utilized with great effect to set the scene and establish the mood, as I call it, or to foretell the direction of the tale.‘…deliberate. What possessed you? What on God’s green earth possessed you?”Ralph felt his face heating up again. “You really want to know, counselor?”“Ralph,” Samuels said warningly. He put a restraining hand on Ralph’s arm.Ralph shook it off. “I wasn’t the one who arrested him. I had a couple of officers do that, because I was afraid I might put my hands around his throat and choke him blue. Which would give a smart lawyer like you a little too much to work with.” He stepped forward, getting into Gold’s space to make him stop the back and forth rocking. “He grabbed Frank Peterson and took him to Figgis Park. There he raped the kid with a tree branch, and there he killed him. Do you want to know how he killed him?”“Ralph, that’s privileged!” Samuels squawked.Ralph paid no attention. “Preliminary forensics suggests he tore the kid’s throat open with his teeth. He may even have swallowed some of the flesh, okay? All that got him so excited that he dropped trou and spilled his spunk all over the back of the kid’s thighs. Nastiest, vilest, most unspeakable unspeakable murder any of us will ever see, God willing. He must have been building up to it for a long time. None of us who were at the scene will ever get it out of our minds. And…’King, Stephen. The Outsider: A Novel (Kindle Locations 961-971). Scribner. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEI’ve tried to provide sufficient insight into “The Outsider” without spoiling the tale and without slipping any expletives into the review. If you have enjoyed King’s recent stories, I think this is even better than those. Mind you, my favorite of his remains “The Stand,” but this story is a very close second, or, perhaps, third.Five stars out of five.Did this review answer most of your questions and concerns?
