I really dislike how the maps show the Holyland, Paul's journeys, etc. without showing them in respect to the continent of Africa. In the world map Italy is shown as if it is no where near Africa not true. Egypt is shown as if it too is no where near Africa. The maps are a misrepresentation of the truth. WHY WHY WHY won't the publishers of these maps show the continent of Africa and the continent of Asia. There is NO Middle East continent. It irritates me to the MAX. I am going to keep the map to use it as a teaching tool to demonstrate to my students exactly what I mean about publishers trying to exclude Africa from the Bible. Shame on you Middle East is a political name not a geographical continent.

This is a great map for anyone studying scripture. I am in a bible study and we are studying Isaiah all year long. These maps are extremely helpful to put names with places, and adds so much more to my bible study. I also love the fact that the overlays tell you where these ancient cities are named today. Every time I turn on the news and hear about different events in the Middle East, I can reference what those places were 2000-4000 years ago, and what historical event took place there. It's very fascinating! Rose (the publisher) also sells a pocket version for $4 each. It's not as extensive as this one, but because I loved this one so much, I bought the pocket version for my entire bible study class. There is also a then and now "deluxe" version that has even more maps and more reference material.

I traveled to Israel last year and the maps helped me to understand better how Jesus, the Apostles, John, and all the New Testament characters traveled, what it may have looked like back then. The maps were invaluable in seeing what the landscape, topographically, may have looked like in the Old Testament stories too. It especially helped when seeing the Roman ruins, canals, churches and temples.I enjoy looking at them today when I'm involved in a Bible study or just reading the Bible. It's makes seeing where important events took place seem more real. It helps me understand better, knowing what has transpired in modern history, why the changes in borders and countries have taken place.I recommend it for Bible readers and travelers both.

(It is also available as a set of overhead transparencies, which is ISBN 0965508234.) This spiral-bound book contains 12 full-color Bible maps, each with a clear plastic overlay that shows modern-day cities and countries. Includes the following maps: * The Middle East during Old Testament Times * Overlay of modern-day Middle East * The Assyrian Empire, Babylonian Kingdoms and Persian Empire *Overlay of same areas with modern-day countries * The Holy Land during the time of the Old Testament * Overlays of United Kingdom, Divided Kingdom, modern-day Israel and surrounding countries * The Holy Land during the time of Jesus * Overlay of modern-day Holy Land * Paul's Journeys (Roman Empire at AD 60) * Overlay of modern-day Mediterranean area. The print is relatively large for an Bible atlas (not giant print, but not as bad as some Bible atlases).

I can't count the number of times I have used these reference maps. I have been doing a study of Old Testament history, and these maps are great in helping me locate places mentioned in the OT. I also make use of the Rand-McNally Bible Atlas which I purchased from Amazon to help me understand the particular time in history that a particular book from the OT is describing. Highly recommend each of these references to any serious student of Bible History and Geography.

Excellent map selections. Even modern areas, such as Golan Heights, West Bank, Gaza Strip, and so on are clearly oulined. also, coastal cities, Paul's routes, entire Red Sea area, Arabian Sea, Haran, Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, Persian Gulf, modern places in red, ancient lands in black, 12 Tribes in Canaan, Empires and Kingdoms, Jesus' travels area, and so on.

I love the modern day map that shows where modern places are, relative to the places the Bible talks about. This little map is a fold-out map, and can easily slip inside a cover of your Bible, to keep it handy, for looking up the ancient places. Some of the smaller places are not shown, and that is about the only negative I can see.

I really like Rose Publishing's books, esp their maps. The only drawback is after opening and closing multiple times they tend to come apart (or maybe I'm just too rough on them). worth buying IMO I bought because my current Bible is more devotional and doesn't have maps and I wanted something thin to add to the back for reference at Bible studies.

There's not much to say. $130 for a five pound dictionary. This deluxe 10th edition of Black's replaces my standard 9th edition. I also have the two volume deluxe edition of Bourvier's. You can't go wrong with either.An extra $50 for the deluxe Black's upgrade buys you a puffy faux leather cover and finger-tabs. I won't pretend that it's worth the extra money. Books are my weakness, so I always splurge on the best copy.I will say that purchasing the 10th edition Black's is a savvy upgrade if you currently own an older version. This edition has 7,500 new terms (post-9th edition published in 2009). I find the most recent version of Black's definitions invaluable for grad school, law school, and for use in court. Seeing that Black's publishes a new edition roughly every five years, investing in the gold standard (either the deluxe or standard 10th edition counts!) is a worthwhile purchase for a book you'll reference for the next half decade.

Significant improvements, additions and changes have been made to this since at least the 5th edition which is the next most recent edition I was able to get my hands on at the bookshelf of my firm. I use it daily. It rarely, if ever, lets me down when I need to look up legal terms, with all their specific contexts and respective meanings. And yes, it will explain terms MUCH better than googling things and hoping you land on sources that know as much as Black's.

I have been in law school for about to years and this book has made it ten times easier when it comes to legal terms! I absolutely love this book and can use it throughout my career. Perfect buy and will recommend to co-workers and more!

It is hard to rate a product I needed for school but the Black's Law Dictionary is the standard for legal definitions. I use it almost daily!

The cover and paper used are both a little thin, but the plus side of that is that the dictionary is not overly heavy to handle. And since they are always coming out with newer editions, I did not want to spend the money on the deluxe edition anyway.

My less that perfect rating on this is strictly related to this particular binding. Black's Law Dictionary in itself is indispensable. I just don't think the premium price for the Deluxe edition is worthwhile. It is definitely a very handsome tome, but that doesn't make it any more functional. The added feature of thumb tabs are what I was looking for to make it more functional but, for me, they are not helpful. They are a little small for my fingers and don't actually bring the reader to the labeled letter(s) of the alphabet but rather a bit before it. Again, indispensable resource, beautiful volume, not worh the premium cost for this particular binding.

If you are a lawyer or in law school you should have one of these. You think you don't need it...until you do. You can ask for judicial notice of the common meaning of words and black'a law is THE resource for that. Great price for this one

A classic legal reference tool for decades, kept relevant and useful by Garner's editorial wizardry. This particular edition is bound in attractive black faux leather, giving it even more gravitas. A good gift for budding legal scholars and young lawyers, even those to whom non-electronic sources seem somewhat archaic. Indeed, I gave this volume to my daughter who is starting law school. She likes it and actually uses it from time to time. At least that's what she tells me -- via text of course . . . .

Janet Evans has written a well-planned, thorough introduction to essential oils and homemade beauty products. Her book introduces readers to many of the most common essential oils available on the market today. She provides basic information for each of these common essential oils, including details about the extraction processes for each oil, and more importantly, details about the common benefits and traditional uses for each oil. She also includes a lot of extra information, but she keeps it simple without overdoing the details. Janet has also written 70 recipes and instructions for readers to make their own homemade beauty products, and they're recipes and instructions that everyone can readily comprehend and follow.She offers also a candid truth, dispelling a lot of the hype about one's choices in brand. That is, in one brand of essential oils versus another, suggesting to other readers what this aromatherapy practitioner has known for a long time: Pure essential oils are pure. One brand is not necessarily better than another, and high priced oils are not better simply because one pays a higher price to purchase them. Besides, it's quite likely all are being manufactured by the same companies and just billed or marketed as being different ( i.e. therapeutic grade vs. standard). That's simply not been my experience over the last 2 decades.Janet's work also discusses skin types, and distinguishes the three main skin types, helping readers understand the qualities of each skin type, and to help them identify which category describes their skin. Knowing one's skin type, in turn, helps readers discern which essential oils and which of Janet's recipes are better suited for use with individual skin types. I appreciated greatly that her recipes are kept simple, so as not to complicate your homemade products with a whole lot of unpronounceable chemicals. In my mind, keeping it simple is kind of the point. For example, her recipes use base ingredients like unadulterated, plain lotions, or pure shea nut butter, or pure apricot oil, or pure jojoba oil and others. Many of her recommendations for base product ingredients are typically available at local health food stores, or they are certainly easy enough to locate for purchase from online suppliers on amazon.com. keep in mind that the descriptions of oils marked as organic, may in fact be different from non-organic oils, albeit no regulations by the FDA have yet been established describing what use of the word ("organic") must mean about accepted standards. Nor has there yet been a precise description articulating any standard of the legal definition for this term ("organic"). I've used essential oils in the past, primarily to make custom massage oils and for aromatherapy for myself. I didn't make any beauty treatments and so I was interested in this book. Making massage oils is easy, add some drops of the oil or oils to fit the needs of the person I was massaging or giving massage oil to for their own use. An afternoon pick me up massage that includes rosemary, one for sleep with lavender and chamomile-all you need are the oils themselves and a good reference on what outcomes the oils can assist in making happen. The needs for aromatherapy are similar. But beauty treatments? Anything beyond adding a few drops of an oil to a lotion involved, I thought would be complicated and a lot of work. This book makes it easy.There's a section on how to determine your skin and hair type. If you don't already know it, this is useful particulary to help you with choosing which skin treatments to make. My only gripe here is in the recipe section it says to use the carrier oil that works with your skin type, but it doesn't say which carrier oils go with each skin type.The book starts with information about essential oils which is a bit technical. The author follows that with a very clear, concise and interesting history of essential oils. The pictures in "Above the North" are beautiful. The author takes you on a tour from a plane w/o having to be in the plane. If you love "Up North Michigan" it makes for a great "take me away" coffee-table book. The best thing was the price for a used book that was in excellent condition except for a name in it. The original price in a gift shop was 5 times higher.

I just received my personal copy of Marge Beavers latest effort ABOVE THE NORTH. If any book comes close to illustrating the beauty of Michigan,this is the one! She has combined her love of aviation with her talents in photography to produce one of the most beautiful "coffee table" books currently available. The color,detail and beauty of the state as show by Ms Beaver just hits you in the eye and is a book i definitely want to share with others.

This book has incredible arial pictures of Michigan. We bought 3 to give as gifts to other Michigan lovers. What a hit!

I stopped in the bookstore and this book caught my eye with the tremendous aerial photo of South Manitou Island in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I've hiked there many times and was impressed by this beautiful view of the entire island.When I looked through the book I knew this was one to share with friends and family. There are unique views here of many of the most beautiful spots in Michigan from Tawas Point to Garden Island. The views are all aerial photographs done with great artistry and perspective. There are views from on high of Manistee and the Lake Michigan Shore at sunset with the sky full of color and the lake spread out to the horizon and the lights of the city seemingly twinkling below,and others of green emerald forested islands settled in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron with a surround of aquamarine waters.There are dozens of "coffee table books" full of beautiful pictures of the Great Lakes. It is not difficult to obtain pictures when there are so many scenic coastlines in the state. What sets this book apart and makes it by far the best photo book of the Great Lakes is the selection of the images, their color and the depth that the aerial perspective provides. You have probably not seen the Mackinaw Bridge as shown here from up in the clouds looking down across the span to the shore at St. Ignace and the eastern reach of the Upper Penninsula. I think anyone with an interest in the land and shores of northern Michigan would be enthralled with this book and would enjoy sharing it with others as I have.

These striking aerial photos show views of northern Michigan's most beautiful landmarks and terrain. The book includes many views of Michigan's beautiful lakes and scenery with seasonal photos from spring through winter. Not only are the pictures exceptionally well done from a technical standpoint, but it is evident that Marge Beaver has the eye of an artist as well. It was fun seeing all the places in Michigan I've visited, but also to find new locales in Michigan that I hope to visit one day.

Marge Beaver's work is absolutely top notch. I have both of her "Above Michigan" books, and the photos are stunningly beautiful. What a great gift this would be!

This is going to sound odd, but in my opinion one of the good things about this book is also its fatal flaw. In telling the personal and artistic story of this important artist, the author reached well beyond his immediate life and really told a whole cultural history of black people's experience in America through his lifetime, and even pre-dating his birth. All of that historical information is interesting and certainly it all had an impact on Bearden's life and work. But the author went too far out on tangents and too often left the immediate story behind for too long. I have found this problem in other biographies I've read recently. I believe if you're writing someone's life story, you should never leave the subject of them or the people in their lives for long. A paragraph here and there about some person or event not directly in the subject's life but important to it, sure, that's fine. But there are long passages in this book that aren't actually about Bearden. It starts to feel professorial. I was already familiar with some of that historical information, but before reading the book I knew nothing at all about Bearden. I wanted the book to stay focused on him and felt disappointed when it didn't. But the writing is very good and there's a lot of important and interesting content. And the pictures of Bearden's artistic works are wonderful.

I first encountered the work of Romare Bearden in one of those stores that used to sell art to students trying to decorate bare walls. I was blown away. In that pre-Internet era, it was hard to find out much about the person who had created such evocative collages, and I gave up trying to learn more. In recent years, more books about Bearden have emerged, including one that accompanied a traveling exhibition in the mid-2000s. I was looking forward to reading a book that covered his life in depth.The author comes from an academic background, and the book reads more like a dissertation than a Ron Chernow biography, with over 100 pages of notes and bibliographic citations. Normally, I love biographies, but this one feels inordinately dry, even with the addition of handwritten letters from the artist to the author (very cool!) Too, the art -- the reason I got hooked in the first place -- occupies about 20 pages in the middle of the book, and thus is separate from the text discussing it. Most of the reproductions are so small that it's hard to get a sense of their visual impact. I realize there are printing economies governing these decisions, but for this reader that was disappointing.The book was more compelling as a work describing the environment for black artists in the 20th century. Bearden grew up in a rarefied environment that brought him in contact with some of the most famous artists and cultural icons of the day, and his talent was identified early. A man who excelled in many areas, he was even offered a contract to play pro baseball, but only if he played as a white man. He chose to identify as black, a choice that "heightened his sense of a cultural DNA" and amplified his desire to "paint the life of my people as I know it." His perspectives on his subjects broke ground for many artists who have followed.The author is a founding member of the Romare Bearden Foundation advisory board, established after his death, and her knowledge of his work, including the exhibitions and events that the foundation has overseen, is encyclopedic. Like an encyclopedia, reading about it is fascinating, but best digested in small doses.

An American Odyssey: The Life and Work of Romare Bearden is a well written biography, social and cultural history. It illuminates and contextualizes the work of Romare Bearden, a keen observer and documentarian of the human condition, in particular the people struggling to emerge from decades of oppression. I was unfamiliar with his work despite years of studying art and art history. His work is not well represented in major public collections. I believe that this book is part of an effort to correct that oversight and give him the attention that he deserves.The book is very well produced and illustrated with numerous color reproductions of his work. I really appreciated having that as a reference as I read, and being able to get an overview of his work, the scope and span, and to be able to relate it to social and cultural history. My 4 star rating is more personal than objective. I am not terribly fond of reading biographies, or history. While I appreciate the understanding it affords, it is generally an area I avoid in my leisure reading. All that said, it is well written and documented and could easily be a 5 star read for those who enjoy this type of book more than I. I picked it up out of curiosity because I had not encountered his work before. That may have been because I have been in Hawaii for 30+ years, where art from the western hemisphere is not particularly well represented. I am glad for the introduction and will look for opportunities to see his work when I travel. I am sure that the small images do not do justice to it as many of his pieces were large, and there is no way that a small reproduction can have the same impact.It is a book that I would recommend for those interested in his work, in art history or social and cultural history. I feel as though I came away with a reasonably good understanding of the man, and a better understanding of the time in which he lived and worked.
