William C. Burton, Esq. is a partner in the international law firm of D'Amato & Lynch, and a former NY State Assistant Attorney General and Assistant Special Prosecutor. He is also founder of the Burton Awards for Legal Achievement. Douglas, Justice, U.S.Supreme Court from 1939-1975.In addition to the features that one would expect in a legal thesaurus, I found Foreign Phrases and Translations keyed to concepts to be both helpful and interesting.The Index is a convenience.This thesaurus is a great reference tool for legal writing.I highly recommend it.
This book, now in its fourth edition, is an essential companion to Black's Law Dictionary, Garner's Legal Usage book, and other essential legal reference books. Great for law students, lawyers, judges, paralegals/legal assistants, and just about anyone else dealing with legal language. This book gives alternatives to stilted, overused, and misused, language. Worth the price (especially if one compare it on a site like Nextag, Shopzilla, and others).
A must-have for the lawyer who is always looking for the perfect word or phrase. I pull this out all the time for motion practice, but it has really been key for some Federal Circuit briefs. I've never quite figured out why the index is half the book, and what the difference is from the "thesaurus" part, but it's all good. I bought a used copy in great condition, and wonder why someone would give this up!
Good thesauras for any writing purpose, recommmend
If you are an attorney, a writer, or simply a person that likes to have reference materiel on demand, this tome is an absolute must. I'm sorry I was not aware of it before, as it would have proven supremely useful to my law practice, especially while drafting motions and briefs.
Just want to say ... buying and getting this to a prison inmate was a success. He received the book and as far as I know it was in great condition..he didnt say anything about it being used. So assume it was in new condition. I am just glad I found a place I can send books to at prison with low cost. Will be certainly buying more. He is reading it page by page. Expect him out soon and his plans are to get into paralegal. Said book is just what he needed! thank you
I have found this to be a good reference, especially since I'm studying to be a paralegal. The study course does not have a class dedicated to legal terminology, and it can be quiet confusing. The thesaurus helps with making definitions clear.
Any serious legal writing needs this reference work to do a better job with the task at hand. It enables better, well rounded and clear writing for any wordsmith.
