What a great book! This is the first book in this series that I have read, but I will go back and start reading the first one ASAP! The author has written a solid mystery. The book flows well and is easy to read. Her storylines are logical and so very interesting that you don’t want to put the book down. Gemma is such a wonderful main character. She is bright, observant, logical and has a great sense for understanding people. The settings are described so beautifully that I felt like I was there. If you like a mystery with a strong female lead, a lovely New England setting and a great surprise ending, then you will love this book. I was provided an advance copy of this book and voluntarily wrote an unbiased review.
.....in the form of amateur sleigh Gemma Doyle! This adventure finds Gemma, Jayne, Ryan, Louise and Moriarty on the trail of the person or persons, who murdered two women - one was connected to the local historical society and one to a local yacht club. The connection between the two is they were both married, at different times, to the same man.I enjoy Gemma"s dry wit and the methodical manner in which she makes her deductions. The supporting characters bring humor, romance and add to the fun to the books. A solid five stars for this installment of the series!
This series does not disappoint! I’ve been reading it since book 1 and it just gets better and better. With a cast of characters that’s easy to relate to this book draws you in from the first page!
Have the series love them all can't wait for the next one.
"A Scandal in Scarlet" is the fourth book in Vicki Delany’s Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery Series. This series is a great introduction to the cozy mystery genre for fans of Sherlock Holmes. Cozy readers will also be delighted by Delany’s book with its interesting mystery, abundance of suspects, and fun theme and setting.Gemma (along with her absentee Uncle Arthur) owns the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop in West London (Cape Cod) and often finds herself in the middle of local crimes due to her keen observation skills and general nosiness. Her best friend, business partner, and baker extraordinaire, Jayne, always gets drawn into the action - usually when trying to keep Gemma out of trouble. This time, Gemma and Jayne are hosting a charity tea and auction to benefit a local museum when the museum’s board chair is found dead in their stockroom, which is coincidentally filled with valuable auction items. When a neighboring business owner is suspected of the crime, she asks Gemma to investigate. Suspects abound, a long ago death is revisited, and another murder occurs all while Gemma and Jayne rush to crack the case. While I am a big fan of cozy mysteries, I am not well versed in the Sherlock Holmes canon. Holmes fans will likely appreciate Delany’s nods to the great detective far more than me, and they may also be interested in several of the books that Gemma recommends to her customers. Nevertheless, I enjoy this series. Delany brings West London to life with her vivid descriptions of the town, its residents, not to mention Jayne’s baked goods! I love cozy mysteries set in New England, and this series doesn’t disappoint (though maybe Jayne could make a lobster roll tea sandwich).I, personally, am a fan of reading a series in order, but I do think you could read this book without having read the previous ones in the series.I recommend A Scandal in Scarlet and look forward to Gemma and Jayne's next adventure.I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. (Please note that I did purchase the previous three novels in the series and read them before I was offered this book for review.)
When Gemma Doyle returns for her fourth adventure in A Scandal in Scarlet, readers find Gemma once again stumbling into a murder investigation. It started innocently enough. After a long day working at her bookstore, Gemma takes her dog out for a long walk only to have the dog alert her to a fire in the town's historic museum house. Gemma does the right thing. She calls 911 and pounds on the door to make sure no one is in the house. Then she goes home. However, as faithful readers of the series will know, this is but the beginning. The fire has caused significant damage to the home. The museum's board organizes an auction to raise funds for the repairs and the tea room which Gemma is a silent partner in and is also attached to Gemma's bookstore is chosen to host the auction. The trouble starts when the newly appointed museum board chair is found murdered shortly before the auction is to begin. A dead body found in the tea room that Gemma is a part owner of and is right next to her bookshop? There is no way Gemma is going to sit this one out. This installment in the series has a couple of very interesting plot twists as well as some personal growth for Gemma. While Gemma is going all in with disguises and the like to gain information, Jane her sidekick scores some vital information by just listening the right people. That this happened isn't so much of a surprise, but that Gemma acknowledged it is. Plot wise, I thought I had the murderer nailed several times before finding my suspect innocent. There are three things that make this one of my favorite series. First, I really like Gemma. She is English to the core and sometimes struggles with life in America. She has enough personal quirks to make her interesting without being over the tops ridiculous. While her mind is superb sharing the power of observation with her beloved Sherlock Holmes, her social skills a more than a little lacking. BUT, she learns from her mistakes. Slowly over the course of the series she has begun to read the social part of a situation a bit better. Secondly, the characters round out the plots nicely. The people who populate West London are not necessarily all good or all bad. Even the worst person will show some good upon occasion while the best of the good will sometimes show a less than nice side as well. Lastly, the book shop Gemma owns is called Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and the name says it all. The store carries all things Holmes. The author includes references to various books or series that are not only straight Arthur Conan Doyle works but many, many books that are variations of his work. This is a reader's paradise. When the first book in the series Elementary, She Read came out, I loved it but was afraid that the quality of the plots might not hold up for a long series. Fortunately not only has the plotting continued to be good, the characters and life in West London have improved with each book. I am already anxiously awaiting book five of the series.I was provided this book in exchange for an honest review.
