I have read every book in the "Known Space" - "Man Kzin" collection. I found this entry disappointing, and sometimes silly.Lacking the hallmark traits of desperation, terror, longing, cleverness, from earlier Man-Kzin titles, this entry seems to be a rather docile read.In 2019, is it still necessary to describe the character Buford Early as Black? There are no descriptions of any other race for other characters in the stories. (There is also a reference to a" Black" no named security guard in a story).This series (Man-Kzin) did break several race and gender barriers in the 1980" & 1990's which I appreciated, yet somehow descriptions of race seem counterproductive in 2019.P.S. The cover art is really LAME. The Kzin o the cover appears to be Whipped/Defeated. Scar from The Lion King is more intimidating than the rat cat seated on this cover.
Some of the stories were a bit bizarre - not at all in line with the general theme of the series and its often adventurous, sometimes hilarious and at times thrilling illustration of the long struggle for supremacy between monkeys and ratcats. I respect the intent to branch out creatively into other themes, though it's a bit hit and miss.Some hilites:The Third Kzin was at times heartbreaking. A quirky story, but in portions quite moving.Scrith was AAAWWWEEESSSOOOMMMEEE!!! This story absolutely REQUIRES a sequel in the form of a full length novel. If there is none, Torgerson will need to be pursued and indicted for crimes against Sci Fi Fandom. ;-)
It was good to read a new 'Man-Kzin Wars' book after so long. So many stories, set throughout the centuries-long timeframe, made it difficult to choose a favorite, so I will not. Read them for yourself and make up your own mind.
A long-time fan of Larry Niven and especially his Man-Kzin universe you wonder what a book without him would be like. I was not disappointed. The six authors capture the flavor of the man-kzin "dialogue" just like Larry did. Please keep it coming.
I enjoyed this book a great deal. While it did not incorporate earlier characters as several recent books did, it is consistent with the timeline and prior canon. I just wish that it was longer or that these books came out more often! Great read, run, do not walk, to checkout!
When I read book 1, I had NO idea that this series would run this long and STILL be going strong. Of course I wasn't familiar with the high-powered abilities of all these fine authors. I hope it continues for another 25years, myself included.
Overall the book was good for many of the stories. However I would like to see some of the stories that man beat the Kzine in the wars and not so much after the wars. But I did like this book and would like to see more of them.
I've been reading this series since the dawn of time. It's great to finally read a new installment to the Man-Kzin War series.
