Review
"We are fortunate to have Dr. Robert Tyminski's first book. A gifted clinician, theoretician and story-teller, Dr. Tyminski holds an analytic mirror up to shadow aspects of human behavior in a way that reveals much of the deep background to such acts; it is not simply a psychology of culprits. His understanding of the potential purpose and value of theft goes beyond even Winnicott, especially when integrating an individuation perspective. The reader is challenged to a fruitful encounter with his or her own darkness by an excellent guide; a book to be re-read." ―Joe Cambray, Past President of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and author of Synchronicity: Nature and Psyche in an Interconnected World "Perusing this insight-studded book about the many faces theft presents to clinical practice, I realized the degree to which depth psychology has ripped us all off by not dealing with this subject so fully before. It is hard not to envy Robert Tyminski―the Jason whose beautiful prose and muscular ability to do the theoretical heavy lifting combine here to gather up the well-guarded Golden Fleece. Unlike Jason, however, he remains faithful to the insistent voice of Medea in the psyche, which guides him to what our culture has avoided facing about this theme. Recognizing the importance of the robber to the child in the adult, Dr. Tyminski can tell us what is coveted later by the person who early loses access to parental love and concern. He summons an unsentimental view of stealing, one of the most resolute syndromes of the shadow, to earn his way to a compassionate understanding of the soul’s efforts to survive through theft. Tyminski demonstrates that a patient’s desire to take what has seemed to belong only to other people can be transformed into a deeper valuing of the self’s ambition to be protected from moral compromise." ―John Beebe, author of Integrity in Depth

This book is a tour de force of the exploration of stealing and loss. I recommend it to anyone, both clinicians and lay people, interested in exploring the motivations for why people steal and/or those interested in exploring the relationship between stealing and loss. It's a wonderful mix of psychoanalytic theory, myth, current research, and case material. My favorite is the case material as Tyminski writes beautifully and his patients and clinical work come alive on the pages.
Dr Tyminski has made an important contribution to the body of analytic thought. The scholarly approach he has taken is thoroughly enlivened by his beautifully, natural witting stye. This book is very enjoyable and thought provoking. An exciting first book. I look forward to the next and many more.Candia smith, DMHFounding Director of the Advanced Therapy Center
Interesting insight into this subject matter!
Jungian analyst Robert Tyminski illuminates thieving as "a piece of psychic reality" through different lens including the myths of Jason, Medea and the golden fleece, Prometheus' theft of fire and the inner thief in Shakespeare's Timon of Athens to bring forward the universality and complexity of this ubiquitous phenomenon. Tyminski reflects on theft as having familial, cultural and archetypal dimensions that he illustrates in gripping clinical stories of children and adults who steal. He includes examples of kidnapping, shoplifting, techno theft and stealing in the consulting room. Grounded in contemporary Jungian and psychoanalytic theories Tyminski links theft to early loss, the potential to repair, a watershed in growing up and a vivid encounter with the shadow. Tyminski writes lucidly and in depth. I highly recommend this book to child and adult psychotherapists & analysts who would like a depth perspective on theft and loss for work with their patients.
I am convinced that each of us is sometimes in need of good advice, but has no one to ask for it. Every now and then we are missing a person, a kind of experienced thinker who can share with us his wisdom, who can master and guide us. Robert Tyminski as the author of The Psychology of Theft and Loss turns out to be one of this kind of teachers. His work generally focuses on the problem of various kinds of theft, but its most important goal is to make us conscious about what the nature of stealing is: what are we stealing for and how does this affect our self-esteem and our possibilities for development. This book is a treat for everyone interested not only in modern psychology but also in history and literature, because R. Tyminski finds examples of contemporary psychological problems in heroes of ancient dramas, myths, Shakespeare's plays, stories and fairy tales. In R. Tyminski's eyes, people are creatures who suffer from having to put up with inevitable losses such as those of youth, beauty, strength, power, and - in the end - life, and who treat stealing as a way to compensate for their sense of loss. It happens to us just like to all the well-known heroes from ancient times. The author's look at the mythical characters as our contemporaries is deep and penetrating, but it is also full of compassion. For example, this allows us to associate Medea not only with her worst attribute - being a cruel murderer of her own children - but rather with her tragic experiences which led her to act under the influence of helplessness, jealousy and despair.Dr. Tyminski as a psychologist works with people who steal. In principle they know that theft is wrong, that it is prohibited and that they could be punished, but they do it regardless. What are their motivations and how can they overcome their temptations? - these are two of the questions considered in this book. They (as well as we) should start by understanding what we tend to compensate for by such acts. For most of Dr. Tyminski's patients, it was a loss of access to the love they should have been given in their early years by their parents. What seems to me as very valuable and revealing in The Psychology... is the fact that each of us has our own internal thief. R. Tyminski's book allows us to see it not only as a force of evil, but also in a different light. He writes: "what can happen to us through blanket repression of our internal thief: we can get duped into foolish choices, can engage in masochistic self negation, and, ultimately, can fall into state of ingratitude and hate".A careful reading of this alluring book allows us to appreciate the innovative contributions made by Dr. R. Tyminski to modern psychology. It can also help us in understanding our emotions and actions better, and perhaps create possibilities of avoiding or solving our problems. So indeed "we are fortunate to have Dr. Robert Tyminki's first book", as Joe Cambray wrote on the cover of this work.
This book is incredible. Dr. Tyminski shows us that stealing is a human activity, going back to the Greek myths. This Jungian psychoanalyst quotes Jung that myths are alive today - we just need to recognize them. I have always been intimidated by those long, undecipherable Greek names. This book explains the universal human emotion that the myths express. The examples from Dr. Tyminski's clinical practice help us identify with those who steal and feel grateful for the healers who help them.
Dr Tyminski's skills as a gifted writer, story teller and exceptional clinician shine through in this fascinating book, asking the complex and multi-layered question, 'why do we steal?' This intriguing study draws on case studies of both children and adults from his practice as a Jungian Analyst and psychologist, as well as from figures in contemporary culture, such as Bernie Madoff and the notorious Ponzie scheme. The author also addresses the issue of Techno-theft and the tragic case of the Rutgers University webcam spying case. My personal favorite was the moving case of young child named Kyle, with severe early deprivation who stole cosmetics from females teachers, in what seemed to be an attempt to create an image of a soft, beautiful inner mother. This is a very compelling and engaging book full of insights into issues of theft, loss and gain, that would be useful for both adult and child psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, teachers and students.
