This book grabbed my attention from the first page. The author kept the story moving along without having any slow areas that might have made me stop reading. I very much enjoyed reading about her different experiences in other cultures. Her descriptions could bring laughter and empathy for the things she endured. Just taking this trip is amazing enough, but I think the author brought the story alive with the details of the people she encountered and the friendships that were made. I learned quite a bit about the other cultures described in her book, some things were heartwarming and some were definitely not. I would enjoy reading another type of book by this author.
When faced with challenges in life, that at first appear to be insurmountable, I have tried to teach my children that if you break it down to smaller and smaller pieces at some point it will be something that you can handle. When Polly was only 12 years old her imagination was captured by the thought that she could walk around the entire world if she just took one step at a time. I loved that she demonstrated through sheer will and determination that one can accomplish whatever they set their sights on, even if it sounds impossible. Our book club was enthralled last night as we listened to Polly tell first hand her stories of her many adventures while taking on the entire world one step at a time!
The last book I read, The Miracle Man, taught me to "let go of the rope" . This book taught me to just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Perseverance in each step. We learn, we grow, we experience. We adapt and change. Walk in faith, no matter the religion or belief system that you have, is the core. You have to believe or you're beat before you even begin. If you've ever questioned what you are doing or if you should be doing something else, then read this book and then read The Miracle Man.
This is one of those books you just don't want it to end. Yet, I was reading voraciously every single day.Since I properly walk (2 hours daily every day for the last 10 years) I related to Polly's story straight away. Even though I do not have the intention of walking the world, I was hooked to this story from the get go. Polly is everything you would love to have in a storyteller. She's wit, funny, honest, simple (yet compelling) and knows how to keep you turning the pages.I encourage you strongly to get this book and get inspired by a story that will take you through the Mojave desert, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland and the US back. What a treat! Most importantly Polly walks for a reason: raise awareness on breast cancer.Global Walk
Polly's story is inspiring, humorous and intriguing. She overcomes obstacles created by people, by nature and by her environment with grace and dignity. She describes people and places with clarity and takes you into her world as she treks one step at a time. Her stories about places and people she encountered are funny and heartfelt. Her insight into different countries and cultures is told without apology and gives the reader glimpses into places not often written about. I enjoyed her love of Turkey and Australia as much as her struggles through India and Europe. This is a book that can be enjoyed by non-fiction and fiction readers and is ideal for book clubs. Part autobiography, part travelogue and part comedy it is a page turner. Polly walked around the world only to discover there is no place like home.
I really enjoyed the book. I expected details on walking around the world similar to the books I've read about walking various trails or climbing mountains etc. But her writing was easy to read and follow. Her shared feeling for America that make me proud. As she saw during her trip, where would we be without rural America. Thank you for telling us your story.
This book was a little hidden treasure. I enjoy reading books about people's various adventures while traveling but this one really just drew me in. Being a woman, i could never fathom walking across town on my own let alone heading out into the big, bad world with just my trusty cart named Bob. She was not letting anything get in her way and she maintained such an impressive attitude and vision throughout her entire journey. She gave it her all each and every day. I was delighted to see that she partnered with the International Lions Club while in New Zealand. I have been a Lions Club member for about 4 years and it made me proud to see how they took her under their wing and passed her along through many of the towns & countries. As our motto states - We Serve! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys travel logs and tales of the immersion into local culture. She was walking on behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness and brought that medical issue to places that never heard about it before and probably now have saved many lives just by being there and being Polly. She was amazing and wish i had known she was coming through PA back in the early 2000's. We would love to have her as a speaker if she passes this way again.
3 MPH is the enchanting and inspirational story of a woman with the ability to envision her life's work, and the will to carry it out. Polly Letofsky walked around the planet. The stepping part alone was a five-year commitment. Then, she wrote a page-turning book about it. With humor and spirit, the author entertains us with her candid observations of the people and cultures, while sharing her goal of raising global awareness for breast cancer. I took away two good lessons from reading this book. First, was a sense of how the events of September 11, 2001 galvanized Muslim cultures in Asia, particularly Malaysia. Second, was a renewed appreciation for the freedoms afforded by living in the United States; especially the one that can empower an individual to clarify her life's purpose, and then follow that dream along destiny's path.
