As a fan of good soccer writing, I try and read everything that comes out about my favorite sport. This book was no exception. I loved Oxenham's first book - Finding the Game - and I'd been looking forward to her follow up for months.It did not disappoint. There are memorable characters here. The homeless soccer players of Liverpool, African women playing in Sweden, Portland, and Russia. A dictatorial, abusive, almost cartoonishly misogynistic Russian coach. The lovable eccentrics of Portland. The clash of religion and sexuality in the American South. The great Marta - a sad example of the struggles still faced by women's soccer despite its massive gains in recent years. Each section made me long for more information about its subject - the mark of wonderful reportage and excellent writing.I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading about the beautiful game. This isn't a book about women's soccer. It's a book about soccer.

This is a good book -- whether or not you're a fan of women's soccer. What we have here is a bunch of stories about the struggles of women to make a living in the minor sport that is women's soccer. Describing women's soccer as "minor" is not derogatory; it's realistic -- and I happen to like the close-up emotions you can have about the sport and its players as contrasted with stories about the distant millionaires who play "major" sports.The most shocking tale here is that of Dani Foxhoven and her season with a mafia-controlled Russian team. This couldbe the plot of a horror movie -- and it makes me wonder why anyone in his right mind would want to collude with the Russians. ;)Another good chapter is about the elegant Olympian Allie Long. To train and to make a few dollars, she plays indoor soccer with immigrant men's teams in Brooklyn and Queens, showing up several times a week (in her Lexus) to compete in gritty games in high school gymnasiums. Most of the spectators are unaware of her exalted status in women's soccer. She is known simply as "la gringa", "la rubia" (Blondie), and "la blanquita" (little white girl). There's also a movie plot here.There's a good chapter on the fiery Afghan refugee and goal scorer, Nadia Nadim. And a long chapter about the plight of gay women on Christian soccer teams. What I love about this book is that its a book that anyone who has any interest in sports should read. From the fanatics who don't miss a single game and read every article on their team to the ones that only watch a game because their partner or families are fans. This book is particularly eye opening for those that don't know much about women's sports or the NWSL. For those of us that do know quite a bit about women's sports and/or the NWSL, it sadly confirms the stories and rumors we've heard for years. I was fortunate or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it, to briefly work in the NWSL and while my time in the league was short, it was so very eye opening. This book really confirmed a lot of what I heard from players and other staff. After my short time with the league I couldn't even watch the games anymore because of how depressing most of the league is. But what this book did for me is reminded me why I fell in love with the league and the players. My first ever NWSL game was a Portland Thorns game. I saw them play the Boston Breakers at Providence Park in the summer of 2014. I hadn't heard of the league or the team, let alone several of the players and my sister, who is not a sports fan at all and hadn't even been to a game, insisted I go to the match while I was in town. I'm glad she got me tickets and told me to go, the game was amazing and the Thorns had a mighty win over the Breakers. I'm a major sports fan and have been to many games across the numerous professional sports league, but I never had an experience like I did at Providence Park. The energy was electric, you could feel the players passion for the game while sitting in the stands and the fans were truly out of this world. I am so glad that Gwendolyn touched on the amazing atmosphere that Portland and the Riveters have created. To be able to get her perspective on the league and the Thorns was great. And not just that, but to hear the stories of players all over the world made me appreciate these women even more. My hope is that the NWSL, women's league all around the world, and all women national teams get the resources and recognition that they need and deserve. I am currently working on trying to get back into professional soccer, specifically working in the NWSL again, despite my horrible experience, because I want these players to continue to live their dreams without sacrificing everything else in their lives. Those players and future ones hoping to be drafted, play for those of us not good enough to play pro, those of us that can't afford to go pro, and for the little girls that dream of making a solid career of playing soccer. Gwendolyn, if you ever write another book on the NWSL or any other professional or semi-professional women's sports league, you can count on me to read your book and to pass it on! Thank you for the incredible insight!

This is one of the best books I have read. This is a book about soccer, not just women. It covers different issues facing people everyday and how we can take encouragement from athletes who have overcome. Every girl and woman who loves soccer needs to read this. If you want to go pro you need to read this and see the challenges that face women athletes everyday. The author brings the players to reality and you get an intimate sense of players from around the world. I am encouraged and so excited. And the writing is fantastic. The book is well edited and well written. This is a must read.

Profoundly excellent. A collection of stories from around the globe that will blow you away. As a fan of the USWNT and the NWSL, this book shines a light on the state of the sport today. One of my favorite books of all time. The thing that really struck me was that these women are so often playing not just to compete and win, but to lift the sport in the public conscious - an incredible burden. They love the game, of course, and more than anything they want to see the soccer "breakthrough" and gain national recognition. Terrific read for anyone, but especially fans of the most beautiful game on earth.I would read these types of stories forever.

This is a collection of few pleasant but minor examples of how our perceptions of time and self-in-time can be influenced by emotion, setting, drugs, etc. I didn't see anything new here. Time and self are cutting edge topics in physics and neuroscience and this book is just not very well connected to that literature, so it relies on more pedestrian examples (being bored slows down time perception).

This book dived deep into the different ways to explore your consciousness. I couldn’t put it down.

Marc Wittmann is one of the few researchers in time and consciousness who writes beautifully, brings together important (but seemingly disparate) ideas, and tells a story that intrigues absolutely everyone. I think his work will dominate the field in the next decade. I was very impressed with Felt Time, and Altered States of Consciousness continues this trend.

Catholic practices and traditions may seem odd to those outside of the faith and this book explores some of most important points of Catholicism.This book looks over several aspects of Catholicism such as what happens at Sunday Mass, what the sacraments are and their significance, the organization of the Church, the importance of prayer, and what Jesus's role in the faith is. I was able to learn about several aspects of Catholicism such as why Catholics adore the Virgin Mary (and not worship her). It also takes some time to debunk some myths about Catholicism that have developed and have caused confusion. Overall, there is much to be learned in this book for those that know little about Catholicism.There is one issue I had with this book. While reading it I felt it generally assumed that one was already familiar with Christianity in general. If you do not know about the story of Adam and Eve or the life of Jesus, you are probably going to be lost while reading this. It mainly seems targeted to those who are Protestant and are curious about Catholicism or perhaps those that were raised Catholic but fell out later in life.Overall though, I thought this was a good book to learn about some of the major tenets of Catholicism. I would recommend it to those who want to learn about it.

Even though I went through the RCIA program I still had some questions about why Catholics did certain things. I also bought it because I wanted a simple book with some of the prayers that are said, that my husband (a cradle Catholic) is unable to repeat unless he's in that setting. This is just a very nice book that easily lays out all of the Why's and How's of Catholicism in an easy-to-read manner. I would recommend it for all Catholics or those who are just curious about Catholicsm in general.

Kudos to the author! Well done! Although this book is not a substitute for catechism, it is comprehensive and pretty much covers all the major stuff. It’s easy to read and easy to digest … a great “refresher course!”

Very easy to read. I bought this for a project on Catholicism and I liked it better than other books I used. It really addresses almost everything you need to know. It also seems un-biased, but rather is just trying to explain the religion and provide information. I did not read the whole thing, but took certain parts for my project.

My purchases on Amazon have been amazing lately. This book was no exception. I am a new Catholic and have a million questions. RCIA is great but doesn't answer a lot.This book does. I haven't read it all but am using it as a reference. It is clearly written and seems to cover everything I need to know...so far. I bet I know more already than most cradle Catholics. I highly recommend this book if you want to know the truth about Catholicism.

An excellent and very readable overview of a very complex subject. Catholicism is explained in a direct, straightforward and sometimes humorous manner. This book may be for dummies but it was definitely not written by dummies.

Not as good as the earlier editions. No pictures or cartoons to help identify the issue. Explanations much more detailed. It was suppose to be an abbreviated answer to questions catholic. No so. Too deeply detailed

I've always been fascinated with philosophy. Anything with the various types of philosophy and famous philosophers has garnered my attention. Stoicism is an area of philosophy that many readers may not know about. But this book gives a detailed explanation on everything revolving around stoicism. Through easy, detailed paragraphs, the authors breaks down the study of stoicism how it applies to our life, and the history of the subject and how ancient philosophers studied it. The book does give an excellent concise definition and explanation. Overall, I think this is a great purchase as an overview into a philosophy that is worth as much consideration today as it did in the midst of the forum’s of old.

Quick read and provides the framework inwhich one would need to further their knowledge within this philosophy. Also provides books inwhich you can further your reading.

Where does stoicism originated from and what exactly does it mean? How can it be applied to one’s life? Many people did not even hear of the term stoicism and therefore actually have a great deal to loose. This book will explain everything. Very informative

Soldier's Heart, by the award-winning author Gary Paulsen, focuses on Charlie Goddard’s enlistment in The First Minnesota Volunteers. The young boy enlists in hopes of becoming a man and supporting his family, unlike his nonexistent father. All through the novel, Paulson expresses the competition of the battlefield along with the symbol of hope. Along the way, Charlie quickly learns that to support his family, he has to survive the circumstances. Paulson’s descriptive writing truly shows the deaths portrayed and how surviving on nothing but stale bread could bring the soldiers together.Paulson has researched for the novel very well and gives a great understanding of how life was. This book is very educational although very repetitive. In each chapter, there is a new battle. In just a few Paulson proclaims which food they had eaten and how wounds would heal. Most actions explained in the novel were relevant but a few not. Paulson directs attention to Charlie’s very first battle, The Battle of Bull Run. Also to his last, the Battle at Gettysburg.Implying that every soldier should have a soldiers heart also known as Hyperventilation syndrome or a form of PTSD. By the end of the story, Charlie has a Soldier's Heart, which may not seem honorable but it reminds him of the past he lived. Only dying at the young age of twenty - three, Paulson explains the true fate of Charlie Goddard during the nightmare called the Civil War.Paulson makes an almost clear image of how the entire war affected Charlie with an injury lasting a lifetime after being shot in the leg. As Charlie or Paulsen described it the killing was more like butchery, slaughtering every soldier one by one. Since Charlie was so young, he never learned to shave or anything about women from war. These cons go to show the realities of the ages enlisted. The recommended age is young adult or middle to highschool, in fact this novel is a true story about Charlie. The book gets a 3.5/5 because it could be monotonous at times and not engaging, although educational. Paulson has an interesting point of view on Charlie, as he adventures to which could be his victory or his deadend.

A Soldiers Heart is a book that I would recommend to other readers not only because of the great details that Gary Paulsen put into it, but because you relive the Civil War. I liked this book because it's about a boy that is 15 years old, Charley Gaddard. He lied about his age and joined the Minnesota Volunteers. Gary Pualsen is a wonderful writer, and Soldiers Heart is one of his best novels. The gore is not all that great, but you get used to it. This is a great book to read if you are learning about the Civil War. Charley was pretty brave for going into the Civil War at the age of 15. What a big task.

My 7 year old grandson and I read the book together. He wants to be a Marine when he grows up and this gave him a good opportunity to see how it used to be to go to war.

This book came right on time in great condition. I would recommend reading it, however, it is very traumatic.

My son had to read this book for school and told me how he enjoyed it.I enjoyed it too as the author takes the reader on a journey about a fictionalization of the teen who enlists in the Union Army during the Civil War.The teen is involved in battles at Gettysburg, PA and Bull Run at Manasas, VA.The story is based on the reality of the civil war but with fictional characters.

Great guided reading book for fourth grade!

Chose this to do a book report on for a college history class, and was pleasantly surprised! While many parts of the book aren't pleasant to think about, I found myself not being able to put it down...I read it all in one sitting! It's a fairly easy read but intensely good.Maybe I liked this so much because I come from a family of Veterans (incl. my husband), but I'd definitely recommend this book!
