About the Author

Burkhard Heer is professor of public economics at the University of Augsburg, Germany. Previously, he was professor of economics at the Universities of Bolzano, Bamberg, and Innsbruck. Burkhard Heer received his Phd in economics from the University of Cologne, Germany, in 1996. He was visiting scholar at various institutions including Georgetown University, Stanford University, Fordham University at New York, University of Quebec at Montreal, University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Federal Reserve Bank at St. Louis, and a summer intern at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. Burkhard Heer is also affiliated with the Center for Economic Studies (CESifo), Munich. His research interests include public economics and macroeconomics. He also published a Springer textbook on “Dynamic General Equilibrium Modeling” with Alfred Maußner.

This book could not have come at a better time for me. I'm a 43-year old Brooklyn yuppie with one 2.5 year old son and it is getting to be time to fish or cut bait on having a second kid. In discussions with my wife on this question I've articulated a notion that the decision should be based on whether it will make our lives better, not whether it will make our son's life better. I figure that while his life will certainly be different if he has a sibling, it will not necessarily be better or worse and thus the decision should be made from our perspective, not his.Sandler basically proves this correct. By taking us through the data, Sandler reveals that singletons lead perfectly good lives (on average) and any notions to the contrary are stereotypes. Indeed, if anything the data would indicate that they may even be better off than kids with siblings.So this does not solve my problem; Sandler cannot (and does not try) to tell me what is right for my life. I still need to decide whether having more kids would improve my life, and I admit to also thinking about the possible person who might not be if we decide to stop at one. But after reading this book I am totally confident that my existing son will be just fine either way and that I don't have to feel guilty if we don't provide him with a brother or sister.

It took me several years to make a decision about my family size, and I enjoyed reading books like this one along the way. You get a lot of crap when you only have one, and it's easier to make the right decision when you have a chance to see actual data. Most people have kids without even thinking about why they're really doing it or why they're having as many as they do. It's a huge, life-changing decision every time you bring new life into the world! I don't understand *not* taking time to really think about it and question why you're doing it in the first place. I'm glad I paused long enough to question the status quo of "if you have one, you should have two." It's a lifestyle choice. Not so you can have a "tiny adult" or "be selfish" or whatever other nonsense people say. I have one, and I don't want to have more and split up our resources.Also...women are told we can "do it all"... but that's a myth. Something has always gotta give. And it all gets more difficult with each additional child. Women are expected to sacrifice everything (like our careers or childhood dreams) when we start having children, then when our daughters grow up, they're expected to follow in our footsteps and basically do it all over again in order to be "good moms". What's the point of sacrificing so much to raise my daughter so she can "reach her full potential", just so she can give everything up in order to have whatever number of children society deems acceptable and continue the cycle of self-sacrifice? I'm not buying into this. I want to model a different way of living and for me that means doing what I love while also raising *one* child.

The following quote sums up this book nicely for me:"Children are a desire, not a calculation. Which is why I believe that if you truly desire more than one child, you'll make it work. People always have. And if you don't, well, there's a big stack of numbers on your side. If we're going to be rational about it, surely the economic verdict suggests we should stop at one."As another reviewer stated (and also in my own experience), this topic can be controversial, and Sandler doesn't pretend to be objective. Rather she takes a side on the issue, arguing that one child is better for her, better for her child, and better for the environment. Personally, for now, I agree with her. I don't believe that Sandler is trying to dictate that everyone should have one child (based on the quote above), rather I believe she is making a very direct argument to refute the stereotype of only children as lonely, selfish, and maladjusted.I also would have preferred Sandler to write the book more along the lines of "only children are just as good as those with siblings", but I can understand why she didn't. It feels like the stereotype of only children is so entrenched that to prove only children are just as ok as those with siblings, you almost have to prove they are better. Similar to how women in traditional male-dominated careers have often had to be better than men to simply receive the same recognition and advancements.I have had firsthand experience with the ingrained stereotype of only children, from strangers and friends alike. When a friendly stranger asked if I plan to have another child and I said no, she literally told me 3-4 times I would change my mind, I wouldn't want to do that to my child. I also have had people I like and respect imply that to raise my only child not to be selfish; I would simply have to be a better parent than 90% of other parents of only children. While it was meant as a compliment to my parenting skills, it's heartbreaking to have someone I trust suggest that (1) I have put my child at a disadvantage right off the bat and (2) I will have to work harder than everyone else to fix that disadvantage.And that exact heartbreaking feeling is why I can also understand other reviewers' vehement criticisms of Sandler's work, because she directly argues only children are better. None of us like to think that we aren't giving our children the best in every way. As parents of only children, we cringe when others imply we are supposedly "selfishly" withholding the absolute best thing we can do for our child by not providing them a sibling. I can only assume that parents of multiple children cringe when Sandler points out that quantifiable, documented, research has shown time and time again that only children benefit from their parents undivided time and financial resources by scoring higher (albeit only slightly significantly) in areas of achievement, motivation, and personal adjustment. Thus it is likely that this book will continue to either receive high praise or deep scorn from most reviewers.My own personal take-away from this book, is that overall being an only child (or a parent of one) is no better or worse than being in a family with siblings. Each has their own set of challenges, and their own benefits. It is really none of my business to judge anyone else's family size, and I know I have changed my reaction to larger families as my sensitivity has grown. I found this book deeply reassuring as a parent of an only child, and I can only hope my review will raise awareness among those in larger families that only children are just as great as everyone else.*ARC provided by the author for an honest review.

I'm glad I read this book, which was recommended to me by my doctor. She knew we were a bit on the fence for multiple children because I felt guilty having an only child. This book was a weight off my shoulders in relieving any guilt I might have had, as the author pointed out many benefits for both the parents and the singleton to keeping the family with only one child.The book was enlightening and easy to read. It's not to say that having more than one isn't good, but it definitely shows that having only one can be awesome, too. The stereotypes of only-children are flawed, but not only that. Singletons are becoming the norm. In fact, many Gen-Y-ers are planning only one, if any at all, based on the limited research I've read.

It posits that the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand would have probably led only to a minor war between Austria and Serbia if the world's bankers stayed out of it. Instead, they financed the armament of the participants for a full-blown world war for their own enrichment. Key concept: As long as governments will back you, through income derived from taxation, the major banks of the world powers can write checks to anyone or any government for any amount of "money", for any purpose, and they make a financial killing. Another one: Credit Unions are able to give you a mortgage loan like Jimmy Stewart in "Its a Wonderful Life" by using the cash savings deposits of other members, in their vaults. Modern Federally Charted "Banks" do not do that. They are simply able to write a check to the seller of the home, and the buyer repays the bank. There is nothing backing the loan in terms of money in the bank's vault. It is all "credit".The Banks use their financial power to influence governments to insure the status quo. It's a short book. It is heavily footnoted. I read it with an open mind. Its worth reading.

I wrote a glowing review, but I used a bad word, and Amazon didn't like it which Dave had used to describe himself and I had disagreed. I told him he had been more of a jerk, rather than the other.When I read the Prologue I was in tears. I waited a long time to get to read this. I had been waiting, like savoring opening that first Christmas present in anticipation. I have not been disappointed.The Prologue set the stage and I cried like this had been my father, my family. The tears were literally running down my cheeks, and when I thought my heart would break, Dave would say something irreverent and make me laugh out loud. He made me laugh a lot. What an adventure!Dave describes himself as unsavory when he was a "boy." I think that was a tad harsh. He was more of a jerk, wandering around, bumping into life and being a real jerk about it. However, once he got on that plane to Australia, and stepped foot "down under" he became more focused. He still had little sense of direction (literally, he couldn't find the Pacific Ocean!) and managed to spend most of his allocated money on booze the first week. But that was about to change. I loved his adventures with Ol' Creampuff and was sad when those brakes failed, but so happy that he made it through (thanks to the Red button?) and that he and his buddy McInnis went on to further adventures.Even his run-in with Immigration continued to lead him ever further into introspective. I am relishing this book as a treat to myself, and I think others will appreciate the humor and insight as much as I have.

I was recommended this book early on by its author, who has become my Facebook friend, but before I knew how well he could write. After meeting him on Facebook, I started making it a point to read his almost-daily writings on that medium. I was already convinced of his being a good writer before I started reading his book but now I have to say he's absolutely terrific! His descriptions of what he did, who he met, and what he saw are FANTASTIC! I almost feel like I've been to Australia myself! He has such a way with conversations too! Except for a few adventures which were far too wild for me, a 62 year old grandmother, I want to go on his next trip to a foreign country with him! Get this book, sit in the passenger seat, and ride along with him. You'll never regret going!

Recently I have been reading informational and political oriented books and magazines due to the current climate in the world and my desire to know before I go to a foreign country. A group I belong to recommended this to me and I must say it was a pleasant, entertaining, and enjoyable read from start to finish. I am a person who has five books on the table at night and read some from each here and there. I read Mr. Mulligan's tale in two nights as it was hard to put down. I recognized instances from my twenties in some of his adventures, but I mostly spent time wishing I had been the adventurous soul who took off to distant lands to find myself at that age.This journey was undertaken after the untimely death of his father at the age of 55. I am sure anyone of any age will find this a moving, many times comical, read and an insightful look into a grieving process that takes an uncertain turn.

I’m an avid reader of everything fiction, non-fiction, I’ve even published my own book. But I cannot begin to adequately describe in words how much I enjoyed reading Mulligan’s Wake, but let me try… This book describes a wonderfully entertaining coming of age adventure of a man in his mid-twenties searching for meaning and purpose. Mulligan’s recount of his stories had me experience so many emotions, laughter (out loud, I did so often), to feeling sympathy even to the point of tears, and I also found myself in envy of some of his experiences. I didn’t want the story to end. Well done Mr. Mulligan, I look forward to your next book!

I read contracts all day for my job, so I must confess that I have not read a book for "pleasure" in over 10+ years! (Sad-I know!) Nevertheless, at the recommendation of a great friend, I picked up Mulligan's Wake and began my quest to break this pathetic streak! I did not like the book...I LOVED Mulligan's Wake! The author, Dave Mulligan, had a genius way of descriptively transporting me into his adventures from Los Angeles through Australia/New Zealand in his hilarious quest "to grow up". Every turn in every city of the journey, Mulligan made me feel as if I were riding "shotgun" with him on his exhilarating undertaking!! At times, I laughed uncontrollably!I was thoroughly entertained by this book! So much so that it has single-handedly recharged my desire to read for "pleasure" again!Thank you Dave!!!When is the sequel?

I'm a critic and real estate appraiser by trade. This book had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing so hard. If I could give it 10 stars I would. Mulligan's vivid descriptions and hilarious situations had me laughing so hard I woke the kids. My whole chest was shaking with laughter and dozens of times I was forced to put the book down to catch my breath and dry my eyes only then to read the next sentence and have the uncontrollable, house shaking laughter return. This book is just what I needed.

Dave's tale of his journey to self-discovery in Australia and New Zealand was crazy and hilarious, yet poignant at times. I found myself staying up way too late because I couldn't wait to read about the next adventure. I actually read the book twice to make sure I hadn't missed anything. A thoroughly engaging book...can't wait for the next one!

Mulligan's Wake is an award winning page turning experience. Mr. Mulligan has a unique and personable way of writing that makes you feel like you are on each adventure right along side him. I looked forward to reading this book every night. Mulligan's Wake is the best entertainment value money can buy! After reading this book, I wanted to call Mr. Mulligan and go have a beer with him. "Paper Flowers Crafts" by Kitty Moore is one of the least helpful craft books I have ever seen. First, there is not a single photo or diagram in the book. Second, the verbal instructions are not always clear. Third, every page has a misleading link "click here to see an image of this craft" and when I clicked it showed me unrelated ads and pop-ups but no image of the craft.

Unlike a lot of crafting books this one actually provides some useful, easy and excellent projects. From embellishing clothing accessories to decorating for bridal or baby showers I that think that I will use some of these ideas frequently.If you like immediate inexpensive craft ideas that provide good looking and useful results you will certainly like this book. When you read though these reviews you need to be aware that there are two different camps in Math Education: Constructivist (NCTM) and Traditional. Constructists focus on application (pragmatics), so spend a lot of time on "real world" projects, communicating about math, and what they call "problem solving" which really means just doing real world problems. Traditionalists take a broader and deep approach and try to cover semantics (the meaning of math), syntax (how you write and rewrite math problems), AND pragmatics. If you look at a book from the Constructivist camp you will see lots of colors and topics and it will jump around without making many meaningful connections. Open this book and you will see no colors and each problem set is tightly integrated with the last. This is by design! The author purposely select problems that students typically make mistakes on so they can learn to avoid making them in the future. This is clearly explicitly stated in the Preface! I pity the poor student who tries to jump into the middle of this book, because the author steps you up through increasingly difficult problems of the same type so that you can learn how to do hard problems (that most students can't solve and won't learn how to solve using the Constructivist approach).I've been using this book for three years and I am very happy with the level of knowledge of my 6th and 8th grade sons. The book intentionally introduces them to problems they will encounter in physical science, chemistry, and physics. However, book is primarily focused on the syntax of math and does not spend much time on semantics, pragmatics, or aesthetics, but without its foundation working with math will always be a challenge. If you want your students to do well on the ACT/SAT math sections and prepare them for advanced mathematics this and Saxon Algebra 2 are the best books on the market. If you're worried that it doesn't contain enough real world problems and math theory then buy a couple of supplemental books. For what it aims to achieve you won't find a better book. I spent years searching for a book like this and this is the only one I've found that's this good. Strongly recommended.

Classic of the spiral approach to mathematics, my daughter seems to be making good progress with this series and we are using the series as her main math textbook. The spiral approach is where you introduce a new concept or two and include problems that review older concepts. It has sufficient examples and problem sets. We are now supplementing with the Art of Problem Solving series which a friend of ours who was a mathematics major strongly recommended. Art of Problem solving for a math competition oriented approach and Saxon for the more normal approach.

Really good text book for middle schooler comparing with Common Core books. It is a huge help for my middle schooler to catch up some math after using Common Core books for years. When will our school could understand this and stop wasting our money on Common Core system? Before that day comes, I will continue use books from this series to help my kid.

We're huge Saxon math fans here. My oldest son has used this curriculum for several years now and in that time has only needed help a handful of times. Very good and thorough explanations, as well as excellent sequence that develops proficiency at every level.

I homeschool my two children. I used Saxon at the beginning then was tempted to switch to two other math curriculums: Singapore math and Art of Problem solving. At the end, I have to agree that Saxon Math is the best choice for my children. They are able to teach themselves math by using Saxon Math.There is no short cut to learn math, unless you are math genius. As much as I hate repeating practice, it is an unavoidable learning process for some people to reach the point of "I get it!". My children are among those people.Even for Singapore Math, you still need to use total of 5 books(lots of repetitions) to retain the learning of new math concepts. When I used Singapore Math to teach my younger one, I only bought textbook and workbook. I found out that when we came back to the same concept after a period of time(the method Singapore Math uses), I had to teach the same thing all over again.For Art of Problem Solving, I guess one needs to have math talent to use it as main curriculum. The math concepts are not introduced systematically. After finishing Art of Problem Solving Prealgebra and proceeding to chapter 9 in Algebra, we tested my daughter's concept and she was simply lost. We asked her to redo it but she was so confused. At the end, she begged me to use Saxon instead.Now both my children use Saxon Math(3rd edition) and we are all happy.Math is math. The concepts never change. The change is in the test. I want my children to have a solid foundation, not to dance around the changing math standards.

i bought this book because i have been hired to tutor a group of homeschooled kids.each exercise set is comprehensive. the kids were turned down by a number of teachers who said it was too hard to teach from.i was intrigued enough to purchase the book and start tutoring.the exercise material is very good. but back it up with some cheat sheetswhen en exercise refers to a previous lesson, the exercise is indexed an helps the student go back and review the material.

I have been using Saxon math products for my children for years and absolutely love this for Algebra 1. The lessons are explained in a way that my oldest gets it without any problems. We also use the Teaching CD's to assist in explanations. You will be very pleasantly pleased with the results of using this Algebra 1 Textbook.

I used this book to tutor my son the summer after he strugged through Algebra in school. It really helped him to solidify his knowledge, and to understand concepts that had gone right over his head. Saxon is a great learning method.
