Another great book about military patches. Thank you!

Great reference

The book is fantastic. In new condition. Full color photographs and loads of information about each patch and WWII patches in general. We were given a collection of WWII military patches and wanted to display them properly and give people an idea of where the patches were worn and who wore them.

As a novice World War II patch collector, I found this book to be very informative. It has good descriptions of the major patches that the collector will encounter, along with estimated prices for both common and uncommon variations. The book also has very useful information on how to spot post-World War II patches. I highly recommend this book for the beginning patch collector.

Jaffee's book is notable for the sheer breadth of his scholarship.One of the more perplexing problems in the study of ancient cultures is the fact that most data was passed on orally. This is especially true for the Jews. Fishbane, and others, have argued that all of the Hebrew Scriptures testify to "manifold ways in which texts committed to manuscript were shaped by their passage through the prism of orally mediated ...tradition" (p 29).By the Second Temple period, famously, Josephus stated that oral scriptures were considered as binding as written scripture for the majority of Jews (Antiquities 10.2.1 XIII,297). Also Philo (-10.2.2 The Special Laws IV 143-150), as well as perhaps Qumran.Naturally, these statements bring on a flood of questions. How were the oral traditions passed on? How accurately were they passed on? Who taught them? Were there schools? Frustratingly, we can only study traces that remain in the scriptures and try to deduce from there.Oral traditions formed the basis for culture through the ancient Greco-Roman world. Rote memorization was standard practice of education across the ancient world, and, in fact, it formed the basis for all education--much more than literacy. (Side note: Price and Isaac of Tel Aviv University are about to release 12,000 graffiti inscriptions which may change all our knowledge on the subject.)Recent scholarship argues that the rabbinic movement in Roman Galilee "bore important functional similarities" (p 129) to rhetorical or philosophical Greco-Roman education. Jaffee shows that the written texts of rabbinic tradition was widespread.The halakhic teachings of the sage or rabbi continued on in the knowledge and practice of his students. "The primary goal of...study was not merely to master knowledge discursively. Rather, it was to be transformed by what one possessed (p 147).

Sometimes the manual needs a little help. This is that help. Manuals tend not to prompt ideas, just to explain function. This is full of ideas. It is a necessary partner to the manual. The manual's treatment of non-CPU lenses is a great example. Landt & Burian fill in the missing information.Is it worth the money? More than. Is it worth your time? Yes.

As a first time Nikon owner I found the user guide to be lacking in some areas. I purchased the N80 Magic Lantern Guide to better understand the complex assortment of options available with the autofocus and auto exposure settings.The book explained the use of AF and AE options quite clearly. An early use of the camera in a very high contrast environment and a set of mostly over exposed photos made me decide I better learn what all those knobs did. This was my primary reason for buying the book.My old camera only had center weighting metering, so the N80 has provided a challenge to learn when to use spot, or average, or matrix metering. This book helped me to grasp the situations where one method may be more suitable than another. It accomplished that nicely.As with any guide like this, there is a certain amount of boiler plate. Material that is there for novices. But the book also helped you get to know the camera and its capabilities better.

Again, Magic Lantern has the best details and "how to do it" with regards to operation of my Nikon F80.. Get this book if you want to not only know the camera function ..it also goes into the "why and wherefore".

With manufacturer user guides for older cameras getting harder to find, these Magic Lantern guides are invaluable. This one for the Nikon N80 does the trick.

Nicely illustrated, very descriptivecompendium of techniques for the Nikon N80/F80 camera.I waited at least a year until it became available...very happy with the product.

This is a useful manual for the N80, even if the text is imperfect. Unfortunately, the publisher merely released a new printing in May 2001, not a new edition and therefore missed a chance to correct the errors that the other reviewers on here have previously mentioned. The reviewers who suspect that some of the technical information was extrapolated from Nikon's F100 camera are clearly right. Not only does the text occasionally describe functions unique to the F100 and not present on the N80, but also on page 179 the author forgot to switch the text and inadvertently calls the N80 camera a F100! That being said, the book has redeeming qualities. I disagree with the reviewer who felt that the Nikon Manual was perfectly adequate. Although the manual supplied by the manufacturer is fairly complete, I was still left with some questions after reading it. Perhaps this is because the whole autofocus SLR concept is new to me. If you are used to more traditional SLR's, this is a whole new ballgame. Comparing this Nikon to my 20-year-old Nikon is like comparing a computer word processor to a typewriter. This manual helped bridge the culture shock for me. And despite some inaccuracies, I have learned some useful information from this manual. One of the better speedlights for this camera is the Nikon SB-28, which is available as the older SB-28 or the newer, more expensive SB-28DX. However, the improvements in the SB-28DX can only be used if one is using the Nikon D-1, not the N80. Sparing me the unnecessary expense of buying the DX model of the speedlight more than paid for the purchase price of the book. And I picked up some other helpful tips as well. The book is useful, but flawed. Its small enough to tuck into your camera bag and for most of us, it probably has something to teach about this complex and wonderful camera.

Though there is plenty of beautiful art in "The Art of Titanfall 2", I think the focus and spread might have been improved. There are roughly as many pages of the game's somewhat identical firearms as there are of its varied and highly detailed pilots and Titans, and I feel that we only see one iteration of many of the concepts for in-game models. That aside, the written descriptors are concise but well-written, and the book does go into some detail of the creative process at Respawn Entertainment, showing some of the evolution from basic sketch concepts and individual works to final products. The art itself is almost all truly gorgeous- from mecha to starships to robots to alien planets, there's plenty inside to tickle your sci-fi fancy. Respawn's best achievement is the detail and variety, the care they put into their work that shines here. You can see colorful alien fauna flitting through the trees of planet Typhon's jungles, and nearly every scratch, ding, spot of dirt, bolt, joint, piston, and running light on a piece of equipment, Titan, or other vehicle is rendered in full detail and multiple paint and color schemes. It'e easy to get overwhelmed but the base concept is simple enough so as not to give you a headache. There is a longish letter from art director Joel Emslie at the start of the book, and some nice little chapter openers with gorgeous overlays. At the end is a shorter section describing the model-making process Mr. Emslie uses in a tradition begun by the first game of using a combination of random parts, 3-d printing, and sixth-scale action figure components to make physical concept models of some of the characters seen in-game. The combination of familiar and unfamiliar, modern and sci-fi elements ended up defining the visual language of Titanfall, and there are plenty of big pictures of the models, whose descendants are eventually encountered in digital form. All in all, "The Art of Titanfall 2" is a little short, and might well have been better organized, but the end result is nonetheless inspiring.

I always thought Titanfall had a fairly strong design aesthetic, kind of like District 9. It was future tech, but realistic. Near-future, but also singularly designed, it was like real life but skewed to be cooler.This book highlights those feelings I had pretty strongly, but also brings to light some very interesting pre-production details like how the game wasn’t necessarily heading in the direction we know and love today. It’s easy to forget that Respawn was born out of the ashes of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4 and that the game started out heading in a more character and story centered way than was ultimately released (check out the giant monster on page 139 which I’m pretty sure is relegated to background status only in the actual game). While I don’t find looking at wire-frame models or CG renders to be that interesting, there are plenty of concept and character art to tide me over, plus insight from the creators on almost every page. A nice art book for fans and collectors to treasure.

The art overall is quite nice. The complaint I have is, just like the first book (In My Opinion) there's not enough art/pics of the technology. Half the book is art about the planets/world settings. I would have liked more images of all the different pilot weapons/uniform designs and the titans themselves. But overall, it's a quality book.

Fans of the game, mecha robots, and sci-fi art would be delighted with The Art of Titanfall. Game developer Respawn Entertainment has filled all the 192 pages of this hardcover with wonderful concept art.The artworks are a mixture, about half each, of in-game 3D models and digital art. And about half the book covers the mechas, characters, weapons, spaceships and vehicles. The latter half, about 100 pages, covers the environment art.Even though the book features 3D models as art from the game, these models are rendered really well with high resolution textures, good lighting and most importantly high poly-count models. They look great. You can still tell that they are texture-mapped, but they are not jarring or distracting.Designs are fantastic. The artworks are printed huge so most of the minute details are even visible. The mechas and spaceships look really cool. Last few pages shows some actual maquettes (small) and a full-size Titan in some workshop.There are a lot of environment art included, such as Demeter's futuristic cityscapes, devastated landscape of Fracture, exotic planets with leviathan bones everywhere, laid back tropical lagoon, and more. Again, lots of wonderful designs. As mentioned earlier, there are also 3D game graphics used here, and they do feel lacking in charm as compared to paintings. Nevertheless, all art pieces are good looking, just different in style.The Art of Titanfall is a great video game art book companion.Highly recommended.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. It's got awesome environments, characters, guns, and concepts. I'm pretty sure the gun collection for the concepts in this book is my favorite part. Very easy to scan and model over because of the layout they chose. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to be inspired or just loves Titanfall.

Pretty straight forward music theory. Good first time introduction or good review of music theory. Definitely a good primer for further study. I'm going to use it as an outline for study. Not to wordy and easy to understand. One of the best beginning theory/work books I've seen or used.

I bought this for my wife so she can learn basic music theory as she learns playing the uke. I already know much of music theory and quickly read through this book and found it does contain the fundamentals of music theory. However, because it does not go into much depth or explanation for each topic I see this more of course material where someone knowledgeable is doing the teaching and explaining and using this book as a reference. While not the worse, if you're looking to learn music theory on your own there are better books out there.

Great theory book for review of my students that I've taught since they were young and now are leaving for college. It has let me know where they are missing info from the past and filling it in before heading to music schools around the country. It is comprehensive and sequential (which I love in all things!). Thanks to Sandy Feldstein for doing such a great job!

This is laid out very well. The textbook has written exercises in it and could be used as a supplement to most any other piano instruction. My daughter took eight years of piano and felt her theory was a little weak, so we bought this book. She has said it has helped her read music more fluently. The book goes from very very simple theory, to advanced concepts.

Similar to another reviewer, I'm a 60+ beginning guitarist, looking for a music theory tutorial. I've been disappointed by 'Guitatar Theory For Dummies', found it to poorly written from an instructional point of view. Example: At the end of a chapter, a series of questions caused me to search fruitlessly for answers I must have missed, only to learn that NONE of the questions was covered in the chapter! The questions are posed as a tease for following chapters.Practical Theory is clearly written, obviously by an experienced teacher for the sole purpose of instruction. Each subject is clearly laid out and then then drilled in by a series of exercises. I've learned more in a few evenings with this book than I've ever been able to understand from 'Dummies' or multiple internet sources. Highly recommend it!

I have used Sandy Feldstein's Practical Theory Complete for many years. As a private voice & piano teacher, I appreciate that this is a theory text that is accessible to beginner students, young and old, and as a refresher for those who know the basic music language. The format of the book, three clear explanations with practice then a review of the three "lessons" is helpful in the pace for the younger and to use as a Review Test with practical exercises to follow up with for those with knowledge of music. I also appreciate the "complete" volume because I can offer the savings to my students of purchasing all the volumes in one complete text. Thorough basic music theory knowledge is presented from note values to circle of 5ths in a great order for the end result of the student composing basic music. This text is a good opener to learning the vocabulary of the music language.

Great basic, basic book for adults! Very hard to find something like this. I teach in a University Music Department. Sometimes we get students who have never seen sheet music. They go into Music Theory 1, but they need some remedial theory, and most of it is designed for 5 year olds. I love these books.

As an adult beginner lute player, I am really thrilled with this book. I took piano as a kid but never learned any theory, and I wanted something that was thorough but not too complex; something that would allow me to understand what the other musicians are talking about when I play in an ensemble. This book is perfect; you can do each lesson in about 10 minutes, then there's a review quiz at the end of every section, and you correct your answers with the key in the back of the book. It's definitely not a substitute for a college-level music theory course, but for the serious amateur musician, it's great.

I'm a beginner learning music and this is a great way to begin....It will bring you from the very basic to much more complicated music theory..such as transposing etc. Highly recommend.

Marlene Sorosky has written many books and I have found them very useful. This is an earlier book but I use it.

Bought this after using Sorosky's Year Round Holiday Cookbook which is my all-time favorite. Entertaining on the Run did not disappoint. Besides some amazing recipes that are organized around themes, there are ideas for advanced preparation that I find very helpful as well as nutritional analysis, prep times and information on refrigeration and/or freezing. Recipes I've tried always impress and many have become family favorites. There are many informational items I use such as using plain and flavored yogurt cheese instead of cream cheese. I now know how to make flavored cream cheese that has far fewer calories than the real thing.

Brilliant! There is no rating high enough for any of St. Maximus writings. For those who enjoy digging into dense Church father material St. Maximus is bar none the best. This book gives you a slight insight into the character of St. Maximus for his trial and becoming a confessor of the faith. This is helpful for those who are just beginning reading St. Maximus. His 400 chapters on Charity is challenging for the rational power of the soul but oh so rich! I already know about his life and writings as he is my 2nd Patron saint so I skipped the description pages by the author so it maybe helpful to those who are not familiar with St. Maximus.

To borrow the opening line of Andrew Louth's introduction on Maximus, "St Maximus the Confessor was born in AD 580 in the Byzantine Empire, or the Roman Empire, as he and its inhabitants would have called it." Maximus is considered a Byzantine theologian (or Eastern Roman theologian) par excellence and universally considered the most important Christian theologian in the Seventh Century. Maximus (in the vein of those coming after him, such as John of Damascus) was a compiler in his theology. As a result of reading of the Fathers one will see much influence in his thought of the Cappadocians (especially the two Gregories) and their friend Evagrius (whose ascetical treatises have influenced much of the later monastic writings such as those found in the Philokalia). Diadochos of Photiki and Denys the Aeropagite's thought and ideas are also to be found in his writings. Maximus' genius is shown in his original presentation of the Father's thought. His writings for the most part are all occasional documents. The Ascetical Life gives advice to young monks in a question and answer format involving a (novice) Brother and an (experienced) Old Man. The Four Centuries on Love represent probably the most enjoyable and therefore the most popular of Maximus' writings. The style is aphoristic, with truths being presented as a single sentence and sometimes as a paragraph. They are profound thoughts and insights that are meant to be meditated on. Their brevity is also meant to aide in their memorization. Naturally being called Centuries there are a hundred aphorisms to be found, four-hundred total in the Four Centuries. Sherwood did the English speaking world a service by translating The Ascetical Life and the Four Centuries on Love into English for the first time in 1955.Sherwood's introduction displays an adequate familiarity regarding his subject matter which is not surprising considering he had done previous writing and research on Maximus. Being a Roman Catholic scholar (who taught at the Pontifical Institute of St Anselm, in Rome no less), often times Maximus' thought is contrasted or explained against Catholic thought. His lengthy introduction was only surpassed recently by Louth. The only real critique I have of the author's translation involves the archaic use of English. Charity was favored over the now conventional term love. But his archaisms, especially when translating Maximus' quotations of Scripture, will only be a slight annoyance to most readers. The meaning of the text is still apparant enough. While I cannot speak on the Greek text underlying the Ascetical Life, I have translated much of the Four Centuries on Love. The Greek text is fairly straightforward and simple to translate in comparison to Maximus' other more profound theological works. Berthold and the translators of the Philokalia had the advantage of Sherwood's translation, so while theirs are superior, they deviate little from the foundational work of Sherwood. So this volume gives the English speaking world access to the entry level thought of Maximus, which had previously been esoteric, in an affordable hardback format. I would have to say any addition of Maximus' corpus to one's library is a wise decision.
