Excellent work! I thought I knew a lot about Milwaukee lgbt history because I've lived 35 years of it, but this book gave me tons of background from before my time and nostalgia for time and places from my past. And the picture of the guy (Jeff) on the cover is amazing.

Brings back so many memories

good review of LGBT Milwaukee a reminder of what has past,a reminder of the fun times I had in the 70's.

This is a FANTASTIC book! Milwaukee has a very rich and significant LGBT history, and the author was able to capture the main highlights in print and on film. I think this is the “must have” item for anyone who wants to know more about Milwaukee LGBT history! I’ll cerrainly be purchasing more copies as gifts for some of my Milwaukee friends.

Excellent read. I expected it would be informative, but didn't know his writing would be so entertaining. Great stories of a century of decadence and fun right here in Milwaukee.

Martin Sandler's book is the compelling story of the banishment over 120,000 Japanese Americans living on the West Coast of the United States. Japanese Americans were forced from their homes due to hysteria after the bombing of Perl Harbor. They had no notice and had to leave homes, businesses, pets, and possessions to move into internment camps for the duration of WWII. Sandler uses photographs, interviews, quotes, and sidebars (backed up with extensive research) to tell about this very dark part of American history. Each chapter consists of information with certain pages containing large font (to stand out)and within these chapters sections highlighted areas of importance, like Dorothea Dix and Ansel Adams photography to document the internment, but their differing viewpoints. Another section is Titled, Expressing Feelings Through Poetry and shares examples of children's poems from camp classrooms. Within the camps were the Isei and the Nisei, nurses, doctors, writers, teachers who work hard to end the isolation and depression many felt. Sports, like baseball, became an important way for the Japanese Americans to fight boredom. There were those who created gardens, made jewelry, and found other ways to beautify their substandard lives. The camps were harsh and crowded, hot during the day and very cold at night; there were long waits to for lunch, dinner and laundry of 2-3 hours. There were many Japanese Americans who served in the 442nd Regiment and Nisei who served as interpreters and translators and they had a very profound impact on the US's victory. The chapters on how the Japanese Americans fared after the war and as the years wet on were so interesting. Today the Japanese Americans are working hard to make sure this does not happen to anyone ever again. They are strong supporters of the Muslim communities in the aftermath of 9/11 because they look like the enemy and have experienced discrimination like the Japanese Americans.The book ends with Place to Visit, Visiting the Sites of the Relocation Centers, Further Reading and Surfing, Websites, Sources and Bibliography.

Sobering history. We have to make sure it doesn't happen again to other people.

I am seeing more and more of our history lost and not covered in our schools. Even many older people do not know that the Japanese were moved out of their homes into barely habitable internment camps for the duration of WWII. `Imprisoned' tells that story, covering most aspects of the experience that Japanese Americans on the west coast experienced.The book is listed for grade 5-8, but even older could learn much and recognize the value of this book. There are lots of photos, but one part bothers me. The author has a very interesting section on the Nisei units - the army units made up of Japanese Americans that fought in WWII and were highly decorated. He gives them credit for being the unit that liberated Dachau and has a touching story of the prisoners there being confused and assuming they were the Japanese army and would kill them.Army records show the 63rd Infantry Division (not a Nisei unit) as being the unit recognized as the liberating unit by the US Army's Center of Military History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. On the same day, 29 April 1945, the 522nd Nisei unit liberated a small camp at Lager Lechfeld in Bavaria. This shifting of factual evidence is vexing.The rest of the book gives excellent descriptions of the settling and success of many of the Japanese immigrants and what they lost in the hysteria after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The laws targeted towards them in the years before the war and the search for remuneration years afterward and the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 are also covered.The photos and descriptions of the camps themselves along with interviews is excellent, even how the US government t documented conditions in the camps and put pressure on Latin American countries to have intern camps as well. Why there were no removals in Hawaii is explained.There is information on how to visit the camp sites and lists of other sources.This is a book that is overdue for reading for many; however the incorrect information on the liberation of Dachau does much to ruin the book's credibility.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, it is well documented, thorough in explanations, calculations, tables, charts. It gives the reader a lot of background information, like materials used for a specific type of valves. I was pleasantly surprised to find references to NACE material standards.It is a good book and I recommended it.If you are looking at cartridge valve info. (poppet or spool), this book does not present or study these type of valves. Check the Table Of Contents, and rest assured that you get a great insight on each of the Chapters and Sections that are listed.

I have been following Regenesis Group for a number of years while they have been doing incredibly important and meaningful work. This book provides readers with insight into the regenerative process and the value and healing it helps create. This should be mandatory reading for anyone truly interested in sustainabilty as more than a checklist. This is the way all development should be done - balancing ROI across financial, environmental, communal and human aspects of the built environment.

I have been interested in Regenerative design for several years, but until now have not found a study that so clearly and succinctly lays out principles, practices and way of thinking that foster it. Basic to this way of thinking is the awareness that we co-evolve with the community when we are able to interact creatively in the ongoing process of community design. This is not a matter of open meetings for feedback on a pre-determined proposal. It is a matter of engaging all stakeholders in the deeper questions of community vocation - the calling of each community, like each individual, to a sense of its uniqueness in the larger geographic and/or political system within which it is embedded, and challenging the community to design for potential expression of that uniqueness. People are not drawn to places like Santa Fe, NM for the big box stores on the edge of town. They are drawn by the cultural and architectural uniqueness developed there over hundreds of years. Living systems grow uniquely in relation to their environment. Likewise, it is only as we grow in our ability to understand patterns underlying change from the perspective of our uniqueness in geography and history will we be able to turn the tsunami of environmental an social devolution into a co-evolving, ever more sustainable future. This book is a wonderful start and reference for engaging community conversations around these opportunities, and a guideline for designing the processes that these conversations might suggest developing. It is also very readable, and full of examples of each principle described.

To be regenerative requires new beginnings and Pamela and Ben and the Regenesis team know this at a very deep level. Gem #1 for designers on Page 21 "If they accept it, designers can help correct the imbalances created by material cultures that have become divorced from natural order." Much harder to do is another of this books's suggestions, to examine the nature of the thinking that gives birth to a new idea. Gem #2: "Does (the thinking) arise from the need to address a problem, to fix or improve what exists? Or does it come from the desire for new ways to generate life and health? In other words, is it defined by existence or potential? Either can contribute to a more sustainable world, but only potential leads to regeneration." WHEW!
