Review

"As a guy who has had the privilege of being regaled by Billy's rock ’n’ roll tales for years, I can attest to the authenticity of his stories. They may not all be accurate, but they are all true, which is more important. He is a real link to our punk rock legends of lore. Any fan of the Replacements or any of the ’80s left-of-dial bands will greatly appreciate this book."—Conor Oberst"Reading Lemon Jail makes me think back to when Spoon would play Bill’s club in the early 2000s: he’d lay the welcome mat out for us from the moment we got to town, and we’d always drive off with an extra case of Tecate and a bit of weed. No one else in the touring world gave us that kinda treatment. This book is tour story after tour story from one of the most genuine originals in the game. Bill Sullivan is the spirit of rock and roll road life."—Britt Daniel"For fans who love the Replacements, this book is your only opportunity to go back in time and be a fly on the van wall. Bill Sullivan’s clever sarcasm, humble anti-rock star attitude, and complete access allow him to tell the band’s behind-the-scenes story perfectly."—Janet Weiss"Bill Sullivan captures the spirit and chaos of the earliest and best years of the band accurately due to the fact that he lived it right alongside us. A true kindred spirit, a fifth member if you will, who from the git-go, got what we were about to the point where it would not have been the same journey without him. Billy had our backs and represented much-needed comic relief on many occasions. Lemon Jail should come with a warning: ‘Don't Try This At Home.’ It's a quick read and, in my opinion, the most successful book to capture the essence of our destructive, drunken outcast brigade in all its successes and foibles. Bill’s ever-present comic sense, woven throughout the book, paints authentically the circus world that it was. I laughed aloud many times!"—Chris Mars"As every obsessive fan knows, there's been one essential voice missing from the recent wave of biographies, oral histories, and documentaries celebrating the storied and notorious legacy of the Replacements. This, then, is seriously great news, 'Mats? droolers: Bill Sullivan has finally broken his omerta, and though no book could possibly contain Sullivan's legendary and seemingly bottomless trove of yarns—or quite capture his unparalleled ability to tell a story in person—Lemon Jail is a riotous, channel-surfing rip through his rubber-legged years with the band, and will more than tide us over until somebody gives the man the full-fledged biography his life deserves."—Brad Zellar, author of House of Coates"Bill Sullivan was right there alongside the band, right in the thick of it, discussing specific shows, tours, and a million anecdotes. In addition to his words, Sullivan snapped hundreds of Polaroids which are sprinkled throughout the book."—Daggerzine"Although brief in size, the book gives us another view of the turbulent madness that was the beloved ‘Mats. Tales of road-induced boredom, which with The Replacements always led to property destruction and dizzying hangovers, are of course recounted; but beyond the goofs lived people who for a brief moment created essential, meaningful art—which is why we continue to read about it, to try and recapture those moments."—The Big Takeover"Lemon Jail is a must-read for any Replacements’ fans; it’s deeply personal and a fun ride."—NeuFutur"Lemon Jail is at its best in moments that perfectly convey the state of pre-internet underground music in America, where house parties, college radio, and photocopied fanzines could propel a small hometown band into legend."—Pitchfork"Old tour passes, disk camera photographs, notes and scraps of paper with art from drummer-turned-artist Chris Mars are just a few of the things Sullivan collected on the road. The book is filled with these physical memories, which provide context and insight to the premier “college rock” band of the 1980s."—Columbia Missourian"Sullivan’s entertaining book, published by University of Minnesota Press, is a glorified tour diary full of sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll, more drugs, and a story about Replacements guitarist Bob Stinson defecating in an ice bucket and sending it down a hotel’s dumbwaiter."—Boston Globe

I had many laugh out loud moments reading this book. Bill was a great person to have on the road with us for many reasons. His writing voice is much like his speaking voice. There were several things he described that I remember differently ... but such is memory!

This is a super-quick but quite detailed journal of road stories that are fascinating to me as a hardcore Replacements fan. Lots of details about specific shows, tours, and cities, and interesting insight into physical touring details that other books about the 'Mats do not have. I wish it were longer, but it's perfect to take all in on a weekend afternoon with a few beers. A must-read for the serious fan.

I have enjoyed this little book about Bill Sullivan's time on the road with the Replacements. The Lemon Jail is the van they drove around in, and the stories he tells are brief vignettes, like memories recalled from the haze they were experienced in. There are photographs throughout the book, and they present much like the stories: somewhat hazy. This isn't a bio like Trouble Boys, it's a peek inside the van. It's like riding along. The story of the band unfolds loosely in the telling. I particularly enjoyed the anecdotes and photos of Chris Mars. He drew a lot of Fred Flintstone. There's even one drawing that almost hit the round file that Sullivan retrieved and included in the book. We don't hear enough about Mars, so I appreciate this. There are also anecdotes from behind the stage of some epic performances, and I can only recommend that you buy the book.Printed by University MN Press it's a beautifully printed and bound book. Well worth it.

A great companion book to Bob Mehr's "Trouble Boys"....it sort of fills in the gaps on the Replacements exploits on the road. Any Replacements fan should have this.

Better than the Bible. Better than that weak ALL OVER BUT THE SHOUTING book written by Westie's buddy who refused to tell one first person Westie story. Better than anything written on the Mats.

i agree with the headline with the same title as this headline. if you read trouble boys, no real reason to read this. i killed it in about 2 hours. i'm glad i read it though.

If you are a fan of the Replacements, this book will put a smile on your face

Great book, a little too short

As much as we love all Julia Donaldson books, Room on the Broom and Stick Man are our favorites! The story is so much fun. A friendly witch starts her travels with one friend, but ends up making several more friends who help her find lost items along the way. She finds room on her broom for all the animals asking for rides, and they repay her kindness in the end. This new board book version is more fun than the edition we borrowed from the library. The library version I'm familiar with seems to have been "Americanized" and some of the changes are a bit of a stretch. But this one seems to be closer to the original. Below are changes between editions (library version first, then new board book edition).-And long ginger hair in a braid down her back.-And long ginger hair which she wore in a plait (plait means braid)-The witch laughed out loud and held on to her hat, But away blew the bow from her braid - just like that!-The witch laughed aloud and held onto her hat, But away blew the bow from her long ginger plait!-"I am a dragon, as mean as can be, And you, witch, look like a good supper to me!"-"I am a dragon, as mean as can be, And I'm planning to have WITCH AND CHIPS for my tea!"-The dragon drew nearer and started to drool. He said, "I won't let you go- do you think I'm a fool?"-The dragon drew nearer and, licking his lips, Said, "Maybe this once I'll have witch without chips."-A nest for the bird and a pool for the frog-A nest for the bird and a shower for the frog

We had borrowed this book from our local library, and my autistic son loved it so much that he wanted me to read it every night. I decided we needed to find him a copy of his own. I saw some reviews that said that some of the lines had been changed. We got the board book and all the lines are correct. If you want a good copy of this book, order the board book, NOT the paperback or hardback!

I seriously love this story. I actually saw it on Netflix first and thought it was so adorable and cute. So when I found out that it was actually a childrens book of course I jumped on my trusty Amazon and ordered one right away.I ordered the board book because I have an 18 month old that just LOVES the sound of paper ripping so the paperback probably not a good idea for a couple more years. Book came undamaged and a perfect size for me to read to my toddler. He loves to point out the kitty and the puppy, and we are working on 'frog' and 'bird'. Such an adorable friendship story! Good for your own children or to give as a gift for a child under the age of 8.This is also the same author as The Gruffalo which is another wonderful story! Both book AND claymation stories recommended. If fact, anything from Julia Donaldson!I paid full price for this item and review it to give other buyers out there more information not listed and whether I would recommended it.

After checking out this book from the library, my son was requesting it daily. We couldn't wait to add it to our personal library permanently, but when it arrived, the text was different from the version we had grown to love.Instead of the adorable text:"A witch with french fries tastes delicious to me!" and "Just this once I'll have witch WITHOUT fries!"we found the unappetizing text:"And you, witch, look like a good supper to me" and "He said, 'I won't let you go, do you think I'm a fool?'"Say what?!Others have experienced the same thing, so please go and look at a physical copy in a book store instead of ordering through Amazon if you want to be guaranteed the original (and far superior!) version. This copy is going back to Amazon, and I've already talked to Barnes and Noble about getting the correct version. It's worth the extra 3 bucks. The original version gets a perfect 5 star rating, but we are completely disappointed in what Amazon shipped to us.

-Arrived in the time amazon said it would arrive and in great condition.-My 2 1/2yr old son LOVES it! I admit that I love it too and enjoy reading it to him. He loves the "whoosh" part. It has improved his vocabulary due to how excited he gets to "read it" and then when I read it to him. It's a really cute book. Netflix has the 26 min video of this book on there and it's cute. It is word for word with the book, I'm happy I came across the 30 movie, that's what made me buy the book and my son loves it.-I even got Room on the Broom apps which are cute. If my son were older he would be able to enjoy it but it's still nice to know that they made the apps educational and fun.

We were introduced to this story by the Netflix short. When we saw the board games on sale here on Amazon, we decided to purchase quite a few books as holiday gifts for little ones. The book is just as delightful as the Netflix version. The rhyming is catching, flowing and natural. The story is of a witch and a cat that take a flight on a broom. Mishaps occur on the way forcing them to stop. Each time, they are greeted by a helpful animal that asks to join the ride. The witch always gives a gleeful YES and they go on. They encounter a dragon whose favorite meal is french fries and witch but the witch's friends come to her rescue. It's a delightful story that is definitely worth a read with little ones

This is a philosophical work by a Native American disguised as an autobiography. Ohiyesa begins his life story in his fifteenth year when his father arrives at his village to take him to a mission school. Ohiyesa chronicles his journey through the world of the white man. Along the way, he learns the language, submits to the educational system culminating in his attainment of an M.D. from Boston College. He was the agency doctor and one of the first people to view the scene of the Wounded Knee massacre. He subsequently served as a missionary for the Y.M.C.A. Throughout this history of his life in late 19th century America, he offers his own thoughts on the disconnect between the proclaimed Christian beliefs of the whites and their actual behavior. This is contrasted to the traditional morality of the native people. The indictment is devastating. This fills a vital place in historical, philosophical, and native rhetorical studies.

After I realized the most authentic way to learn history is to read accounts written by people who were there, I am very appreciative of books such as this one.Sadly, I do not see our general "American" society is progressing on the enlightened road any more than when this book was written at the turn of the century.Mr. Eastman's observation's about how some "Christian" people behave rang true for me.I will be reading more by this author. Thank you.

A beautiful, poignant, work by a man of deep humanity and wisdom. Eastman's Sioux journey from Plains Indian to educator, doctor and spokesman for his people is as amazing as his ability to write and communicate about it. This is a book that speaks to today and deserves much wider attention.

In a lot of ways I could relate to the struggle faced by Charles. I did not grow up on a Rez but I did grow up in a very poor, very rough neighborhood. I am mixed (Irish and Italian along with Apache and Comanche). As a kid growing up in the neighborhood, I had to deal with issues from both sides as I was always called half-breed... the white side didn't like the native side, the other natives didn't like my white side. Circumstances created an opportunity to get out, and I was on my own at age 14. Leaning on the lessons learned from my grandfather (Apache and Irish), I had to learn to adjust to the hypocrisy of the white world. Struggles were bitter at times, but I did get the opportunity to go to college, graduate with 3 majors, completed an MBA program in Operations Research, and finally have reached retirement. Lessons learned over all those years reflect a lot of what Charles also faced, but in a lot of ways, it was tougher for him as he was often pushed to forget his Native upbringing. I was able to "hide" better as I had enough white in me that a lot of people didn't recognize the native side. This is a very good book in the history of one man that really reflects the history of a people who had to move forward or perish. I've recommended this book to other kids who have grown up in a poor background situation that basically works against you to move ahead, and tell them that they need to really look at this book for answers they can use.

Like the book title says travel from the deep woods to civilization. A boy raised in the Indian culture is encouraged by his Indian father to learn and embrace the white mans culture to help the Indians transition and grow. Travel with Eastman as he struggles, grows and fulfills his fathers vision beyond expectations. Great read!

I learned more about Charles Eastman's career as a doctor for his Sioux tribe. I was interested in learning more about him after I watched a movie called "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee". I also wanted to learn more about Charles' wife Elaine Goodale Eastman. If anyone is interested in Native American history in the 1800s, this is a book I recommend. I enjoy learning more about the Native American Indian history of each tribe.

I chose this rating because of the increase in knowledge that it gave me. Mr. Eastman gives information on why there continues to be conflict on settling on a method to live and learn for his people , the Sioux. I also felt like I have known some of his disillusionment. I hope that I may some day find reason to feel some satisfaction with my own life.

This excellent book chronicles the unique experience of a Native American, Ohiyesa known as Charles A. Eastman, who experienced his original Sioux culture in Southern Canada for the first fifteen years of his life, after which he was taken by his father to the USA. Then began his second education, this time into western culture and learning, culminating in Eastman's qualifying as a medical doctor at Boston University. At first Eastman, as a young man, was completely open to the western American way of life and to Christianity. However, in time he was so profoundly disappointed with American values, corruption and greed that he returned, step by step, to his Indian values. Eastman's story is one of deep tragedy, not just for himself but for his people - native Americans, whom he consistently remembered and constantly championed.

I learned about this book through the Disney Parks Blog and I knew I had to order it. I am reading it like a novel as the book is divided into categories, almost like chapters, and then in each category are questions from fellow Disney fans and the answers from founder and chief Disney Archivist Dave Smith. Dave has been doing his job for over 40 years and clearly has acccess to a wealth of Disney information. As mentioned the book is broken down into subcategories such as "Disneyland" featuring questions about Disneyland and "Walt Disney" featuring questions about the legend himself just to name a few. I found the section on Disney shorts to be absolutely fascinating as I was unfamiliar with a lot of the things discussed. For example, did you know there are 75 Silly Symphonies? Other things learned: Do you know when Mickey's birthday is? Do you know what kind of dog Goofy is supposed to be? Do you know why Goofy talks and Pluto does not? Those are just an itty bitty fraction of the questions asked by readers in this book. Even if you are a huge Disney fan and know many, many obscure facts, I am very certain you will come away after reading this with several new tidbits of knowledge to impress your Disney friends.Dave Smith put together a wonderful book of exciting and interesting information. I highly, highly, highly recommend this book if you love Disney as much as I do. Excellent read!

Not your typical trivia book. This is a book for the Disney nerd that would like to learn some deep trivia. The questions are a collection of queries that were sent in to Dave Smith over the years he spent writing for various Disney magazines, papers, etc... As the premier Disney historian, he dug up facts and details from resources that no other person had access to at the time and he presents it all in a fun and digestible format. This book is geared toward reading on your own not for tossing questions out on a long car ride, unless you really think the vault more shallow than your depth of knowledge ;)

I was really pretty happy with this book. It has different sections in it about all things that the Disney company has done. Included are pages about Disney world and Disney land, and also disney movies that are both old and new. The questions that are featured are interesting and varied. I am a disney fanatic, and we go to Disney world at least once every calender year. My only complaint is that I wish this book featured some colored photo's depicting images from some of the movies or one of the disney parks. Other than that, this is a good book.

Bought it for a Christmas gift for my daughter since she works for Disney and is all about them. She just graduated college and is working on getting into the animation area of Disney/Pixar. She loved the book. There were actually things in the book that she didn't know which I was happy about since this was a spur of the moment thing I ordered her and recieved it in 3 days!!! Was so happy that I could get it to her in time for Christmas. And she knows quite a bit about the Disney parks and Walt himself. Very pleased with the book and the shipping. Recieved it earlier than given for a ship window which is always good! Very pleased!!

I first received this book as a paperback for Christmas and I started reading it. However, I soon realized that I was spending more time reading books on my Kindle than in book-form, so I purchased the e-book as well. Very good book...lots of questions I've never thought of asking or to ponder about. The guy who wrote this is an actual archivist for the Disney Company, so he's very knowledgeable and answers each question thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a Disney fan...you will not be disappointed.

The last book I purchased for Dave Smith to sign at an Event, but got sold out, so I have books but no autographs, know Dave Smith?

I was intrigued by this book, having studied Disney in all its many facets, since 1972. The price seemed right, and I was eager to find out what I didn't know yet. I have spent hours reading and rereading this book. There were times when I wished the author had gone into more detail with his answers. But I still regard it as being a valuable and entertaining source of Disney information.

Perfect for when your traveling on a long road trip or out by the pool

Face the Music: A Life Exposed, by Paul Stanley

From Booklist

Most people will probably not associate sensitivity with the flamboyant heavy-metal rock band KISS, and yet in his memoir, front man, rhythm guitarist, and cofounder Paul Stanley succeeds in making a connection with the reader, KISS fan or not. Born with microtia, a deformity that left him deaf in his right ear, Stanley felt like “a freak.” His stage makeup (heavy white face paint with a star around his right eye), therefore, functioned as a mask that hid his doubts and insecurities and turned him into a larger-than-life persona, Starchild, which served, he explains, as “a defense mechanism to cover up who I really was.” Stanley discusses his childhood growing up lonely and friendless in Manhattan and Queens, and the pivotal night when he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show and realized that music would be the “vehicle” to lead him out of his misery. He also writes about his fellow band members, the ups-and-downs of stardom, and the decadent rock-star lifestyle, coming across through it all as likable and down-to-earth. --June Sawyers

Review

“Paul Stanley proves himself as an artist in music and on canvas and now with a great book.” (Jimmy Page)“Both honest and inspirational. Amazing tales from one of rock’s great frontmen.” (Sir Elton John)“Paul is a great man who has achieved great things. From the Popcorn Club all the way to the Hall of Fame, his story is inspiring and motivating for anyone who dreams big.” (Dave Grohl)“An entertaining yet piercingly honest journey from self–conscious child to the world’s most visually famous rock band, to, finally—with the makeup wiped away—a place of peace as a father and a man. Paul Stanley’s story is both ordinary and extraordinary, which makes it inspiring.” (Mitch Albom, author of The First Phone Call From Heaven and Tuesdays With Morrie)“For years the members hid their true identities behind cartoon personas and hard rock anthems... After years of carefully maintaining his Starchild superhero identity, Stanley lets down his guard and unleashes a torrent of pent-up feelings that erupt and flow over 400 pages like molten lava.” (Guitar World Magazine)“KISS’ flamboyant “Starchild” unplugs his high-wattage amps and introduces fans to an even more intriguing character: Stanley Harvey Eisen... [Face the Music is] an indispensable part of KISStory.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Elegantly and thoughtfully, Stanley takes us behind the mask of Starchild, his KISS persona, and shares intimately his own insecurities about his physical appearance and his emotional life.” (Publishers Weekly)“Most people will probably not associate sensitivity with the flamboyant heavy-metal rock band KISS, and yet in his memoir, front man, rhythm guitarist, and cofounder Paul Stanley succeeds in making a connection with the reader, KISS fan or not.” (Booklist)

I loved and hated this book. I loved it because I enjoyed the triumphs over his obstacles, and found it inspiring. BUT as a long time fan of KISS I found Paul Stanley a big disappointment as a human being. He basically starts the book by complaining about his parents and blaming them for his short comings, or for not being supportive. When he speaks of the early years of KISS it's clear he has a personal vendetta against drummer Peter Criss for whatever reason, in fact there is not one time he mentions Peter in a positive light. Every single time Peters name comes up it's to trash him. From Peters performance as a drummer, his singing, his lack of song writing skills, to his personal misgivings, to his "complaining" (and it seems Paul also does his fair share of whining here.) No I don't think Peter was the greatest rock and roll drummer there ever was, but lets face it not everyone in the 70s was Keith Moon, Neil Peart and John Bonham, but in his prime Peter held his own. Paul goes as far as to say he couldn't solo and he sounded like "Ricky Ricardo playing the bongos instead of a rock and roll drummer" Which I found amusing but also disheartening, Peters drum solos were probably the most memorable and energetic on any live album period. Yes he fell apart and stop caring in the late 70s but hey, give credit where credit is due. If he was such an awful drummer, person, and singer (yes he even said Peter couldn't sing) then why have him in the band to begin with?, and why wait so long to get rid of him? Later Paul tells a story how his first live in girlfriend was on drugs and he put her out on the street as soon he found out, which he seemed to be bragging about. Nice guy right? In his early days as a cab driver he also brags about stealing money from his job. Later in the book he finds out his father was in a loveless marriage with his mother and had a long term mistress, Paul basically s***s all over his dad for it... after writing through out the whole book about all the women he's slept with. I suppose in Paul's eyes his dad was only permitted one for his whole life. What makes all this so disappointing is that Paul is a grown man, he's not in his 20s where he can bitch and it's cool and rebellious, he's in his 60s, and to use his own words "complaining about winning the lottery and having to pay taxes" Rather than being forgiving and seeing the big picture, which is. "Hey my childhood was rough, but it made me who I am and I wouldn't change that for a thing." " Peter was great and did a lot for the band, including Beth, and some diversity in vocals, and maybe he wasn't the John Bonham I fantasized about playing with but he did some tasty drum lines and memorable solos, if only he weren't such a pain in the ass" ... He is more forgiving toward Ace, and it comes off more honest when he complains about him. He also bitches a lot about Gene trying to take credit for being the genius behind KISS and sets the record straight there. He even bitches about the late Eric Carr, which wasn't his first choice for replacing Peter. Toward the end of the book he comes around and tries to convince everyone what a great guy he is because he found love and has kids. What I did like about the book was he did show us a side to him which we don't often see. His ear deformity, growing up and while with the band, the fact that he had no friends, and that's why he worked so hard ( big surprise there, he still doesn't realize he was a selfish jerk.) So yeah Peter bitches about being ripped off and taken advantage of in his book, and Paul doesn't lead me to believe this wasn't the case. I suppose after reading all there bios (and Lydia's) I can see they all have different view points about how things went down, and why they did the things they did. But Paul and Gene walked away with KISS,A and all the money and glory that comes with it, to continue bitching about 2 guys that helped put, and keep them on the map is beyond me. KISS was on the verge of being a one hit wonder before "Beth" can you give Peter some credit for at the very least being the voice behind the song that saved your ass from obscurity? In the end it was still an interesting read, but also a turn off.

Huge Kiss Fan Here. I ran across an interview paul did for this book on the Today Show. Paul came across the most authentic I have witnessed any member of Kiss so I purchased the book. Paul is a NYC kid like I was. I was pleasantly surprised to read about the many things we had in common. He even lived 3 blocks away from me at one point. Thanks for turning me onto The Move. GREAT BAND !The book tells the Kiss story and the Paul Story. I found it to be very informative and reflective of a life attained through hard work and determination, also of luck.Paul stresses the good and disregards the bad as un necessary. The Starchild has grown up.Thanks for the memories and the reminder to be yourself. Kiss was very instrumental to me in my youth. I will never forget the joy I got listening to them and staring at the album covers. My imaginary friends that inspired me when all felt wrong.Peace

It seems there are three types of Rock Star Biographies: "I survived but it ruined my life", "He died, this is how it ruined his life" and the rarest of all, "I survived and came out reasonably healthy and normal". This is one of the latter.Paul turns out, unsurprisingly, to be the intelligent, sensitive one. Don't expect minutiae about tours, equipment or particular songs and albums. Those stories are told in detail elsewhere. This is the well written and engaging story of Paul's overcoming a physical handicap (deafness and deformity of an ear) to become one of the biggest stars of the '70s. He holds back very few punches in exposing his take on his bandmates. Having read numerous books by and about KISS I believe I'm more inclined to believe Paul than the others. Those who aren't fans might be tempted to give this a miss, but if you have any interest in the story of the self described "Hottest Band In The World" told by one who was there, it's worth a read.

Like a lot of kids back in the mid to late 70s, I was a huge KISS fan and they were my very first concert experience in 1977. But, admittedly, I kind of 'grew out' of my KISS phase by high school as I discovered other groups and styles of music, and only listened to them on rare occasions in the ensuing years (although I still followed news reports about them). When they launched the first of their 'farewell tours' in the late 1990s, I caught one of their shows. I finally decided to buy Paul's book for a couple reasons, 1.) I'm on a kick lately reading a lot of band/musician biographies and autobiographies, especially of the music I grew up with, and 2.) I've always been curious to read a first-hand description of the origin of KISS. I went into this with moderate expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the book overall. Paul was honest, candid and thoroughly captivating. I learned a lot about him as a person and what motivated him to get into music, start the band KISS and to continue participating in it for the next four decades. It was kind of hard putting this book down to be perfectly honest. If you're a KISS fan, this is a great book. If you aren't, it's still a great book. I'm now listening to these guys again on Spotify, and am planning to see them on their next "final" tour in March, 2019.

Review

“Romance and mystery, war and Prohibition, infidelity and murder, inheritance and lies—the list of ingredients is long and potent in this cocktail of dramatic suspense rooted in early-20th-century Florida . . . Williams’ story, a rich brew of suspicion and intensity, also has a flavor of Daphne du Maurier, with its Cornish roots, dubious housekeeper, and embattled heroine . . . there’s no denying the author’s full-blooded commitment to her intricate edifice . . . Williams spins a good, spirited yarn.” (Kirkus)“. . . A gripping novel of scandal and suspense. Williams is at the top of her game, crafting an engrossing beach read with enough twists and turns, action and surprises to keep anyone riveted. Florida in the summer was never more intriguing.” (RT Book Reviews)“[Beatriz Williams is] a master of the historical fiction genre . . . COCOA BEACH is a breathtaking family drama that moves from the battlefields of World War I France to the sun-soaked beaches of Prohibition Era Florida.” (Shelf Awareness)“If you aren’t actually traveling to Florida this summer, picking up Beatriz Williams’ latest just might be the next best thing . . . If you’re hankering for a Prohibition-era romp through Florida with a healthy dose of intrigue, look no further.” (Bookish)“Williams has gained a solid reputation with readers for her gracefully written historical fiction, and COCOA BEACH is an excellent example of her ability to flawlessly marry a finely honed plot rich in unexpected twists and turns with a full cadre of richly nuanced characters, who will keep readers engaged from the book’s first page to its stunning conclusion. Readers who enjoy novels with a strong sense of place and time will especially savor William’s latest masterwork . . .” (Reader to Reader)

Wow. This book was painful for me. I've read all of her publications (including by her pseudonym), and she was an auto-buy. But this book was just painful. Usually the flash forward/back doesn't bother me, but when 88% of the book vacillates back and forth with me not caring what happens to the depressingly flat main character? Well...I just didn't like it.I had tweeted to Ms. Williams asking for a family tree of her books. I never received a reply. When I finished this book and saw that she finally connected it to another...well...heck, I don't even remember that book Beatriz. I read a lot of books. I can't keep all your facts straight when you go back and forth and back and forth. I'm sorry. I really wanted to like this. I just felt like this book was all build up to a "oh wait lemme flip that oh lemme flip that again oh look did you see what I did there? HAHA dear reader I don't care what you think" ending.I'm writing this review so that I remember not to buy any future books. And sadly, I'm pulling her from my twitter authors list so that I don't make the mistake again. That is how strongly I feel. It is only 2 stars because I did manage to finish it.

I first read Beatriz Williams' Along the Infinite Sea, which I thoroughly enjoyed - the characters, the plot twists, the time period. Naturally, I turned to Cocoa Beach, her latest release, to read more Beatriz Williams. Cocoa Beach is a fairly good book, but there is too much going on - too many characters with confusing pasts (hard to determine what is true and what other characters lie/misrepresent about each other). I never really grew to like Virginia - she's so noncommittal, hesitant, and seemingly frail - but (maybe?) strong. I didn't really buy into the love affair between Virginia and Simon (she, too hesitant; he, to quickly "in love" with her).A few of the events in the book were never fully explained: What really happened to Virginia that moonless night on the beach? Why was she given the medication she was given at Maitland? Mr. Marshall's role in the story? The revelation, at the end, of Virginia's father? Lydia's role in the entire book? I read the book not really all that interested in the characters, but wondering what would happen in the end.I also found what seem to be a few editing mistakes: page 105 - Virginia is sitting with Hazel to her left, Johnson to her right - but then Green starts speaking to Virginia. Chapter 29 - the date given is July 22 - yet chapters 28 and 30 take place on July 25.. Did we go back in time for a moment? It seems as if the story is simply continuing, from the hotel in Cocoa (Chapter 28) to the highway outside Winter Park (Chapter 29).All in all, the book is entertaining - I enjoyed the setting - the time and place make me want to read more of Beatriz Williams' books - but I hope the next B.W. book I read is more like the engaging, colorful, and interesting Along the Infinite Sea.

I really enjoyed her books "Tiny Little Thing" and "A Certain Age" but I did not enjoy this book as much as the others. I felt it dragged quite a bit and parts of it were confusing as it vaulted between time periods.I did like the twist involving Simon, Samuel and Clara and did not see parts of that twist coming so the element of surprise was good. However the ending left me totally confused as I have no idea who arrives with Marshall at the end of the book. I did look up online to see if I had missed something in the book that would explain the ending and the only thing I saw was to read her book "Wicked City" to find out the identity of the arrivals. Personally, I found that suggestion a bit frustrating.

''Romance and mystery, war and Prohibition, infidelity and murder, inheritance and lies . . . Williams spins a good, spirited yarn.'' --Kirkus ReviewsFor me it was more a nightmarish yarn!!!! Oh yes it had all the above, but it felt as if it were a nightmare spinning out of control. Not my type of book unfortunately, because I bought it having read other more enjoyable novels written by Ms. Williams. I'm sure there will be other novels written by her, I'll just have to be less trusting of the reviews and more judicious in my choice! To make matters worse, the ending left you hanging in the balance, assuring the reader there would be a sequel. Indeed, if that is the case, I will borrow it from the library (if I even do that)!

I am completely clueless about the ending! The last 20pages had so many " twists" to the plot I was loosing which character was which until by the ending I didn't even care.

Read and loved all the other Beatriz Williams books and was so excited about reading this one. Sadly this one is not like the others. The story is confusing, with lots of unanswered questions. None of the characters were particularly engaging or likeable, and like others I also struggled to believe the love story. A big 'meh' from me.

I hadn't read Ms. Williams last book, A Certain Age, yet, but I knew I had to do that before I read this book because her characters always make peek appearances in future books. I really need a detailed family tree of connections, please. But, I was really glad I did. While I really liked the characters of Sophie and Octavian in A Certain Age, the story itself didn't keep me on my toes like Cocoa Beach did. The entire time I was reading Cocoa Beach, I was unsure whether Simon was good or bad. Would he be Virginia's one true love or her huge mistake. I love how the trials of her childhood (that we learned about in Certain Age), came back to haunt her and her choices in this book. It really kept me on my toes until the last moment. As always, you get drawn in to the time period that Ms. Williams writes about and into her characters lives as if they were your next door neighbor. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and well written summer read.
