I adore this book. It was a required text for a digital imaging class at my university. It's written in the style of a comic strip or graphic novel. There is so much information packed in here and I don't think would come across in any other format than this. It is not only about comics but addresses layout and type and point of view and so much more then you would even imagine which would carry over into any other art medium. It's just brilliant and a joy to read. This all coming from someone who does not usually read graphic novels or comic books. I'm really happy with being assigned this book. It's one that I'm not likely to ever resell because it's just fun to have around and to reference when needed. Definitely a great purchase.

For a novice to the world of comics (other than having read a few obvious series such as Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, The Walking Dead and a few manga) this serves as an amazing introduction into the deeper philosophy and craft of the art, as well as a fantastic way of getting up to speed with all the devices and tropes used to navigate and make sense of the medium.On a meta-level, the book is also a stunning work of art in its own right and an amazing essay on determination, hard work, craftsmanship and creativity. The chapter on the subject of 'what is art' may well be the best description of the artistic process - be it related to writing, music, programming, whatever you like - that I have ever seen.In a word, stunning.

This books sort of blew my mind. It was recommended to me by an artist friend, and in a book about making web comics. I will read it again and again and keep it around as my comic bible. I read it all very quickly and it was easy to read. McCloud has amazing insight into art and how to create interesting stories as well as communicate through drawing. Before I read this book, I had never really been exposed to anything like it before. I hope to see him speak some day. He really knows how to explain complex concepts, and inspire others to create!

I've wanted to read this book for a long time.As an aspiring graphic novelist, I've had my eye on it for as long as I can remember, and I decided to spring for this and finally get my hands on it. The book arrived on time and in brand new condition. The front cover of the book I received doesn't match the one advertised, but that's neither here nor there. I'm sure I just received a newer reprint of the book.I'm on chapter four right now, and I must say, I've enjoyed this book immensely so far. McCloud's explanations and philosophies have me looking at my own work and comics in general, an entirely different light.I would recommend this book to any artist/writer out there, or even just the average comic lover wanting to understand this artistic medium a little bit more.

I feel like there's something about this book that didn't click for me. It's a fine history book, excellent even. I feel I understand comic design marginally better at best. I got this to help with a design project involving comics, it didn't help and I made no adjustments. If you're looking for something to assist in making comics, this isn't necessarily it if you're already a designer. If you'd like to understand why comics are as they are, here's your book. Very little info on modern comic design. I don't regularly read comics, I did appreciate the method of storytelling through the medium.

I had to purchase this for my art class, and I was skeptical because I rarely find our required texts to be helpful in any way. But this book reakly impressed me! The format is just like a comic book, so it makes it more fun to read, and he explains things is a SUPER easy way to understand. I definitely learned a lot about comic history, comic anatomy, and how different styles affect the way the reader interprets what is going on.

Recommended during a lecture by legendary Apple Computer designer Susan Kare, this book is really phenomenal. Useful and eye-opening. Great for anyone interested in visual story telling. I think it'd make a fantastic teaching / learning tool for teens, but it's just as fantastic for seasoned design professionals!

For any illustrators, designers, comic book artists, enthusiasts, writers, etc. It is THE best and most comprehensive breakdown of all different forms of art that can relate to the comic medium but also be brought into other fields. I work in the gaming industry and at least three cubicles in my current view have some portion of this book photocopied and hanging in their cubicle.Get it, absorb it, and then keep it forever as reference. If you take these lessons to heart, you WILL be a better artist.

We love Science comics! This is a house hold favorite along with Maris Wick's Human Body Theater. What a colorful, hilarious, and informational way to learn about trees. My daughter and I enjoyed the humor in this book and definitely gained even more respect for trees,

My son loves this series and the author Andy Hirsch in particular. Inspired, I gave copies to my nieces and they also love the series. Looking forward to more. (Kids have loved these from 2nd to 5th grade so far )

My kids love these comics. The read and reread these books to the point where they can spout all sorts of fun science facts. The topics introduced in the different books has also led us to fun family discussions of various topics in biology, etc. that have really opened the door for grasping science concepts.

Although Hirsch tries to capture the cute with his narrator, an acorn, this is instead a volume more about knowledge, and there’s plenty covered. A frog, a leaf, a beetle, a squirrel, and a woodpecker all try to talk the acorn into accepting his fate of being a tree by describing how impressive they are. As a result, we learn about* germination and how roots form* what determines direction of tree growth and how it’s affected by environment* where trees get energy and their place in the ecosystem* the difference between trees and plants* why trees have bark* different types of trees and species diversity* flowers, pollen, seeds, and fruit* the fungi-based mycorrhizal network of communication* and why trees are greenThere’s a ton of information packed in here! Even with all this, Hirsch keeps the pages visually interesting through his acorn’s expressions and gestures. It’s amazing how expressive a simple shape can be in the right hands. That’s why bits of this information will stick with me. A favorite lesson was the one on different types of symbiotic relationships. Hirsch does a terrific job with both anthropomorphized creatures and more realistic forest settings.There’s a lot of specialty vocabulary about cells and tree structures, so the five-page glossary in the back is a helpful resource. His instructors also point out that trees are a keystone species and help with weather control, while also discussing species diversity and convergence. Several illustrations show plants as the bottom of the food pyramid and how Earth is a closed system.This would be a great title to use in a study of plant life, food chains, adaptations and related science topics. A large glossary, a page of facts about acorns, a two-page leaf guide, and suggestions for further reading are in the back matter.Highly recommended for middle grade readers and up.

Great book. I have the Amaden-Crawford already and think it is a very good draping book. This one is , in my opinion, even better (not that the CAC one is bad).First : The book begins with all the basics. Tools, fabric weaving, grain, marking style line, a quick reminder about facings and buttoned extensions etc...Then : How to prepare the figure, with tape over the bust, lines, how to analyse and see the figure if working on a person instead of a dressform. Basic measurements that helps as guidesAnd finally comes the draping process. For the basic set (basic bodice, skirt and sleeve) They are both quite identical in result. The technic differs a little though. I tend to prefer the way HJA pins ease "fold" while draping : one of my major issue in draping is ease ('cause I've draped for several years by myself molding gowns and bustiers before getting into draping eased garment as dress and tailored jackets...)But for the 2 darts bodice I really like the way CAC adds a grainline in the center of her princess panel. This really helped me.I really like that she proposes 2 attachable arms the relaxed (for classic sleeves) and the straight arm (for raglans and kimonos).The people owning her book on patternmaking will encounter some already known styles (I don't know if it's the same for CAC, I only have her draping book). And as on the drafting book you'll find a really consequent amount of styles to drape.

While this book is quite expensive because it is a textbook, it is worth every penny to the advanced sewer who is beyond alterations to ready-made patterns but needs specific concrete instructions on how to drape their own designs. Despite the glamorous cover, the book is practical and straightforwardly organized. Fully-illustrated, it clearly walks you through draping every imaginable garment, one component at a time. You do have to be working off an actual body or a dressform, as this is draping to personalized fit, not pattern-making to industry specs. If you have not mastered garment construction the book will be over your head. It truly sticks to the topic of draping and design. There are many aspects of making original clothing which are not covered, from fabric selection to couturier construction techniques. This is not an advanced sewing manual. It is about draping and I can't imagine it being more clear or thorough on that topic. Invaluable for the new designer. If only it came with Tim Gunn to offer constructive critiques as you worked...

This book is great for those with intermediary / advanced sewing skills who have a lot of creativity but still need a few pointers to make their sketches come true. It's an education. If you are a beginner and are serious about learning, it's a good investment too, just keep in mind the book assumes you already knows the basics and won't be holding your hand step-by-step.

I've had this book for about a month and it is already falling apart. For the price I paid for this book, this shouldn't be happening. I've asked other classmates and they've all said the same thing. My rating reflects that of my disappointment. As for the book itself, it's okay but I wouldn't say it's the greatest book for beginners. I agree with a past reviewer that said this book is best used with an instructor.

I absolutely adore this book. Its so easy to understand and has very detailed steps and great photos to follow along. I first saw this book at school for the fashion design students and fell in love. It took a long time to arrive but that's probably because I'm spoiled by Amazon Prime. I expected it to arrive slightly used since the seller described it as so but it looks new! Very happy with my purchase. Can't wait to get started.

I took draping at FIT decades ago but I'm just starting to get back into design. The text book I had was the size of a child's story book. This book goes into great depth while giving easy to follow instructions and plenty of photos to follow along. Fantastic! It's a must have if you want to learn draping.

If you are an aspiring fashion designer this book is very simplistic. Worth every penney.

I wanted to wean myself off dependency on commercial patterns and having invested in a dress form, I came across this book. It's a bit pricey but it turns out that it's a fashion school text book, hence the price tag. The text is very well-written and illustrated. The author has the reader analyze a fashion drawing, and identify the structural components of a particular garment as most embellishments can be broken down to basic components (i.e. dart excesses).My only peeve was that some definitions for terms I wasn't familiar with (e.g. Princess Line) couldn't be found in the back of the book. Also, not all the formats seen in fashion are portrayed in this book. Most, if not all, garment examples have a waist or empire seam, and designed for woven fabrics (no knits); and as far as I can tell, the author doesn't direct the reader/student on how to accomodate for that. However, I am happy that there is a section on bias-cut gowns (the info. is very hard to come by on the Net) As a self-taught sewer and wanna-be designer, this book will definitely help me to go to further.

These mantras work incredibly well and very quickly.I've had this book for a while now and have used it frequently and with great success.I'm no longer surprised that magic works and definitly not that Baal Kadmon.s magic works I have never missed with his excellent books and this book retains the high quality.

I love Baal Kadmon's writing. I got this book as much for the rituals as for the background on Kali. His writing style is crisp, clean and to the point. He can teach in a few pages what other authors spend chapters trying to explain.I highly recommend this book for your introduction to the Goddess Kali.

There are typos and formatting errors throughout the whole book, including all over the back cover. It's so extremely bad that it makes it hard to even stand reading it! The cover itself is extremely cheap and the image on the front is blurry. The whole thing looks very unprofessional, like a 9-year-old slapped it together. I can't believe I paid 8 bucks for this.When you get to the part about rituals to Kali, it quickly becomes obvious that this was copied and pasted from a website and not edited at all. Tools for performing the rituals are unclear, as they are listed as links (not URLs) and the ingredients and so forth are not given (As in "Kali Goddess Blend" incense, for example.). The rituals themselves are all practically identical, with just the mantras and candle colors switched around. The astrological reasons for why certain rituals are done on certain days are not explained. That being said, I do think the rituals are effective and can provide a goodfoundation for a beginner.I can't say this text is completely useless, but the formatting issues and lack of detail leave much to be desired. I would be thrilled if a revised, meatier, and more professionally typed and printed second edition was put out.

I have been a servant of Kali since 1990, and have used many Mahakali mantras to great effect over the years, but I still learned some things from this book, and I recommend it to everyone that I work with whether thery are a student or formal Apprentice. I just wish I could print it out.

I have only done Kali's mantra a few times but they always have left me with a lot of energy. You can feel her presence with these mantras.

While the book does have what seem to be some essential Kali mantras, and descriptions of traditional rituals - even going as far to loosely translate some of them or tell you what each mantra could be used for - the actual execution of the book is very poor. The cover is extremely pixelated (which is not really that important but felt it needed to be noted) and the grammar/spelling/punctuation within is honestly terrible. Multiple errors. Honestly, this wouldn't be that big of a deal to me but since mantras are so important to recite in an exact manner, the copious errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar make me weary as to if I am really reading and reciting the mantra correctly.I will use this as a loose reference, at best.

I really like all of Baal Kadmon's books. They are very informative and to the point.

My best friend and her family have a beautiful home on a secluded, private lake in Northern Wisconsin with a loon family on it and every year we meet the new babies and fall in love with the mama and papa. We joke that we are "two loons on our lake" and we know we will be together forever and so when I saw this book I had to buy it for her. It brought tears to her eyes when she opened it and that was pure joy for me to see.

Ka-ha-si and the Loon is a great text by Terri Cohlene. It is part of a series of Native American legends and depicts traditional Native American values. This is a great piece of multicultural literature for the classroom.

I think of the Loon as the state bird of Minnesota, which it is, so the idea that it makes its way to the frozen North makes sense since I live in the frozen South. This volume in the Native American Legends series tells the story of Ka-ha-si, an Eskimo boy who lived with his mother in s small hunting village near the sea but who spends all of the day asleep by his lamp. Then one morning, before the sun was up, he was awakened by a beautiful black bird with white speckles on its back. The Loon had brought him a message from Ka-ha-si's grandfather. But first Ka-ha-si must do things to make himself strong for when his grandfather calls for him.When a season of hunger comes to the village, the Loon tells Ka-ha-si to help his people. The other villagers doubt that the boy they call Lazy One can do what the best hunters cannot, but he surprises them, not once, but twice. Several more times the Loon awakens Ka-ha-si to tell him of a crisis that is affecting his people, and each time Ka-ha-si rises to the challenge. Finally the day comes when the Loon takes Ka-ha-si to his grandfather, and we learn why Ka-ha-si is known as the Strong One.Of course, I like that at the end of this story the legendary figure of Ka-ha-si has an obvious corresponding figure from classical mythology, and hopefully young readers will pick up on the similarity. I am not sure if "Ka-ha-si and the Loon: An Eskimo Legend" provides an explanation for the way things are that many myths do, but it is still an entertaining tale. Then in the back of the book there is a look at the Eskimo culture, with maps and photographs (the latter coming mostly from the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Washington Special Collections Division) covering their homeland, people, food, clothing, and shelter. This section also talks about the Eskimos today, with a list of important dates, and a glossary of terms from "caribou" to "umiak."The watercolor illustrations by Reasoner show the variety in style and color of the parkas worn by the Eskimos. One of the strengths of this series is how it combines stories that are fairly detailed and complex with information on the history and customs of the Native Americans from which the story comes, which makes it stand out from other similar series. Other volumes in the Native American Legends series by Cohlene and Reasoner includes "Clamshell Boy: A Makah Legend," "Dancing Drum: A Cherokee Legend," "Little Firefly: An Algonquian Legend," and "Quillworker: A Cheyenne Legend."
