There were more enticing choices this month on Amazon First Reads than usual, so I took my time to select the most provocative suspense. I especially appreciated the bio of the author of “Hunt Them Down.”The opening displayed great potential, for enjoyment and for disappointment. By Chapter 4, I was, alas, leaning towards disappointment. Why?1 - The author gives us an info dump about Chicago and the street value of a kilo of heroin and how some $15 Mn is peanuts to a drug cartel. Granted, if done correctly, this sort of information CAN lend credibility, so at this point I’m not too concerned, but...2 - The writer decides he wants the embedded tv journalist (equipped with his own camera, I think, to be a hater of police “bullies” (author’s words, not mine). The reporter is a ‘prima donna’ who live tweets a raid, thus enabling an escape/defense by cartel members, who kill a member of the team. Mind you, all of this happens in the first three or four chapters, so I don’t consider these revelations to be spoilers. When you come across a reporter who dares to even think of his greatness stemming from tragedy, well, part of me wanted to toss my Kindle-app equipped iPad across the room. But, then, as a former journalist, I don’t view the media as an enemy of the people.But, I abhor reviews that reveal too much of a book’s plot, so will stop here.BLUSH FACTOR: One might expect an Action-Adventure to feature hard-edged characters evoking profanities. In that sense, there are no surprises here. Some will be disappointed in the number of eff-words, but, as for me, the language spoken felt real, even if the number exceeded the artistic needs. Put simply, don’t plan on reading to children or to your prayer group.CHARACTER: Early on, it felt as though the writer might be developing cartoon characters, but I also surmised he might be setting me up for turning the jerk reporter into a buddy to the agent later in the story, so I read on. Certainly, the agent (Hunt) felt like he was drawn on the author’s alter-ego.EXCERPT‘...Moore couldn’t believe his luck. He checked his live viewers. Ten thousand and climbing. Amazing. Everything desirable in a life or death kidnapped teenage girl(s) tale of torture and revenge and acting maverick outside the box. Very very violent but very little over the top carnal behavior or sexual violence.

I try to finish every book I start, but after reading the first 80 pages, I just could not find anything interesting in this book to make it worth wasting the time to finish it.

Lots of great ideas, but the proportions in some recipes seem insanely off. Use common sense. The soup dumplings need about 2 cups of the gelatin mix (I believe the recipe calls for 14 cups) and are inedible at half the ginger amount stated. I sort of saved them by cutting the gelatin amount in half then freezing most of it and adding a lot of chopped greens to drown the ginger. I love ginger. Definitely fry or microwave a sample before you stuff dozens of dumplings and realize they are inedible. That said, there are lots of tasty combination and good advice. The shrimp/celery ones were delicious as written.

This is a charming little cookbook--nicely designed, even witty in its endpapers and illustrations. The recipes are well written, easy to understand, and in many cases illustrated in a series of how-to photographs. Helen You and her co-writer Max Falkowitz want you to learn about making dumplings from scratch--no previous experience is necessary. That doesn't mean that making dumpling dough is easy--we found that it is not. It takes strong hands, lots of time and patience, but the fillings are light and tasty and we think that with practice making the dough and shaping the dumplings will get easier. Meanwhile, you'll have fun. (If you're in NYC, do take the 7 train to Main Street Flushing to Mrs. You's restaurant. It's a treat!

I'm a big fan of Dumpling Galaxy and Tianjin dumpling houses in NYC, but i have to say I'm a little disappointed in this book.While the recipes for most of the fillings are quite good (although, i have not tried the imfamous soup dumplings other reviewers have warned you about), many of the recipes call for far less or more dumpling wrappers than the recipe recommends. Also, I find this dumpling dough recipe to be very difficult to work with, especially when humid. I also find the instructions for wrapping to be very unclear. I've had to watch several videos online of Helen herself folding them, only to semi-master her technique. I have since found other techniques for wrapping that work better, also via youtube.I also have found that the recipe yield for much larger dumplings than the ones served at Helen's restaurant. I'm still working on fixing the proportions of wrapper size to filling amount to get the delicate adorable dumplings like the ones at dumpling galaxy, rather than the giant monstrous ones I keep churning out.In short, learning how to make dumplings is a daunting task to begin with. While many of the fillings in this book are flavorful, seek other sources for wrapper recipes and techniques (or just buy the wrappers!)

I've made several recipes and enjoy the book and the inspirational ingredient combinations. Complaints that some of the recipes have proportions off I think comes from converting weight measurements to volume. for some ratios in the dumpling dough recipes you just have to get a feel for how much water you actually need, and kneed the dough for long enough, rest it for long enough, etc. if you do that, it all works really really well. The side dishes in the back of the book to accompany dumplings are also very good. I hope some day I can go to her restaurant.

Beautiful cookbook, lots of yummy looking pictures of different styles of dumplings and steamed buns. I don't eat meat or poultry usually, so I'll have to alter the recipes a bit, but I was buying the book moreso for the dumpling instructions and food presentation ideas, and this book does not disappoint!

If you're new to folding dumplings, Kenny Lao's 'Hey there Dumpling ...' gives much better explanations and illustrations.All in all, this is a pleasant little book but in no way definitive. I realise that this book is intended to represent the dumplings of the author's restaurant. However, it is highly unlikely that I will ever eat there. Consequently, my review is based on the book solely as a cookbook on dumplings.

So, I wanted to love this book. I have been looking for a Xiao Long Bao recipe and this one looked so easy and reasonably tasty. Unfortunately, it doesn't taste very good since it relies on the meat for the flavor and not a rich aspic. The rest of the seasonings don't carry the recipe. The other instructions in the book are good and clear. There are some interesting flavor combinations that I'm going to try, just was disappointed that the XLB recipe wasn't very good.

He also wants us to see that every word Christ said is vitally important.First, though, he understands that we have to know what Christ said; so he carefully collates Christ’s teachings from the Gospels and Revelation. He expands on that with other verses from both the Old and New Testament, to further explain the Biblical teachings on the Last Days, the Rapture, the Tribulation, the Millennium, and final Judgement, and Eternity. That was a good, if brief, introduction to the study of Biblical prophecy both personal and general.Several sections specifically address the controversy over the meaning of some of the parables. He explains several different views, and then explains why he believes the way he does. I may not agree with all of his conclusions, but many of them were very insightful.Finally, he teaches us from the first chapters of Revelation, the letters to the seven churches, what our duties are in these final days. That part was very personally convicting and encouraging.I found the use of the New Living Translation distracting. I wish they had used a literal translation instead of a dynamic equivalence translation. It draws my attention away from what the author is trying to say, and I feel that I should look up what it says in another translation.I received this as a free ARC through NetGalley and Harvest House Publishers. No favorable review was required, and it was my pleasure to provide my honest opinions.

Etan Thomas a former eleven-year NBA player, was born in Harlem and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has published three books: a collection of poems titled More Than an Athlete, the motivational book Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge, and Voices of the Future, a collection of poems and essays by young writers from around the country on topics such as racism, Trayvon Martin, President Obama, gun violence, and AIDS. Thomas was honored for social justice advocacy as the recipient of the 2010 National Basketball Players Association Community Contribution Award, as well as the 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation Legacy Award. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, CNN, and ESPN. A welcomed collection of sports figures, past & present, and other affected persons, speaking on the injustices and social issues that we face in today's society. It is especially refreshing to hear the voices of today's athletes, their feelings and them assuming the responsibility to speak out in response to current events. This book is a very good read and brings attention back to the many challenges and inequalities that we as a country face on a daily basis.

I couldn't put this book down once I started. It really told how African-American athletes are affected by racism in this country. He could have left out Mark Cuban because he was a original Trump supporter.

Excellent, informative, unique read

When I read the title of this book I knew immediately that I had to read it. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed. Now I don’t personally really follow sports but I have two teenage sons and a husband so I am familiar with most of the athletes that were interviewed for this title. Regardless of whether or not, you follow sports if you follow the issues this book is a good one to check out.Despite my not following sports I am alive in this country right now so it is hard to miss the athletes who are standing up and speaking out on the issues that are affecting the black and brown communities. Unless you are living under a rock you have heard about Colin Kaepernick and his silent protest of taking a knee during the national anthem. You may be unfamiliar with the other athlete activists but this book will bring some of those individuals to light and perhaps, like myself, you will start to look at some of these athletes a little differently.We Matter showcases not only the athlete’s themselves who have stood up and spoken out but also some of the coaches, owners, and people in “power positions” in these industries who have also decided that it is no longer ok to sit back quietly and be bystanders in the injustices that are taking place. Reading the stories that some of these individuals share, not only about their feelings and reactions to things that we have seen happening to others in this country but about their own personal experiences is heartwarming. Learning of their involvement in trying to actively affect change is soo refreshing.There seems to be a common narrative among a lot of people who think athletes should simply, “Shut up and play!” Obviously, those people are not affected by the issues that are being spoken out about and are wanting to continue living in their blissful ignorance. I absolutely love the fact that the athletes are joining in and championing campaigns and introducing legislation and fighting right along with the rest of us who are tired of seeing our people as hashtags.This collection of interviews along with Thomas’s personal narrative is masterfully done and should be required reading for all young athletes. I will certainly be passing this on to my sons and other young men in my family. Not to make it an afterthought but I must say that the inclusion of interviews from the family members of some of the most recent well-known cases of black casualties was amazing and will certainly pull on your heartstrings. I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this title. I think this book came at the right time and hopefully, this title and others like it will continue to roll out and will encourage others to pick up the torch and join in the battle and encourage those that are in it not to give**I received an advanced copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

Etan Thomas makes a tremendous effort to bring the voices of today’s athletes out of the background and gives them space to share their thoughts in his book of interviews with over fifty athletes, sports and media personalities. In addition he gives voice to surviving family members who’ve lost loved ones to police actions.It is good to hear from the athletes, but it is especially compelling to hear from family members who have buried their fathers, brothers, sisters and remain to endure the pain, suffering and often near debilitating depression after the media lights dim. What becomes apparent is how appreciative the family members are of the athletes that have offered their support either verbally and/or through small gestures.And subsequently the athletes do understand that the platform they enjoy allows their voices to amplify just a little bit louder than the average joe. And some more than others are warming to the task and see the injustices as part of their social responsibility to speak up and stand up.All the names you heard about, interviews with a family member are contained within. Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and others.The one thing that is seemingly offensive to Etan Thomas is the thinking represented by Willian Rhoden, in his book Forty Million Dollar Slaves. “[C]ontemporary black athletes have abdicated their responsibility to the community with treasonous vigor. —William C. Rhoden, Forty Million Dollar Slaves”I understand that most of the interviewees are contemporaries of Etan Thomas but be clear, there are no modern day Muhammad Alis here.The only one who can be mentioned in a sentence with Ali, Russell, John Carlos, and Tommie Smith is Colin Kaepernick. His taking a knee on the field has cost him his career. This is in no way to diminish the other athletes, but Etan seems to be positioning them as being great risk takers, hyperbolizing their “activism” when at times the risks are minimal.Etan was so bothered by Rhoden’s comment-he refers to the quote a few times-and that line of thinking that says today‘s athletes are not concerned with community politics and social issues, he has an interview with professor and scholar extraordinaire Michael Eric Dyson where he attempts to gently nudge Dyson into refuting or at least rebutting this thought thread. To his(Dyson’s)credit he doesn’t fall for it, giving acknowledgement to the current athlete, but also honoring the grand and great sacrifices of their predecessors. Dyson says: “But number two, there’s no question that there have been tremendous expressions of social conscience, but let’s be honest . . . there has been a transition from the sixties and seventies, when players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jim Brown and Muhammad Ali took stands in bold fashion for vulnerable populations of which they were a part.”Dyson goes on to explain that there has been a transition from social conscience to social service and so the athlete of today has different concerns and face different consequences for their “activism.”It seems like ESPN journalist Scoop Jackson has threaded the needle with his distinction between protest people and statement people. Carmelo Anthony is an example of a protest person. Scoop says, “So therein lies the difference. I see what everybody else is doing and they are making statements, which are great statements and very much needed in this day and age, especially with everything that is going on in present-day society . . .” This after he salutes Carmelo Anthony for his protests around the Freddie Gray killing in Carmelo’s hometown of Baltimore, MD.Etan Thomas was recognized early in NBA career an outspoken proponent of social and political issues and his pulling this project together is an extension of the work he begun early in his life. The book doesn’t have to be read in order, it is neatly divided into sections allowing you to jump to the interviews that most interest you. But the book is required to be read in its entirety.
