I love art and craft, so when I came across this book in my searches I was naturally thrilled. I like using my hands to make things, so the different paper flower crafts that are outlined in the book are exactly what I need to pass the time. There are designs for beginners all the way up to experts. I consider myself an intermediate where this is concerned. Nonetheless, the flowers are eay to make and would make great gifts for loved ones and serve as affordable decorations for events.I appreciate how the book provides links to show pictures of the finished products. It is a great book to read and the steps are very easy to follow. Get it and start creating wonderful paper flowers.

"Paper Flowers Crafts" by Kitty Moore is one of the least helpful craft books I have ever seen. First, there is not a single photo or diagram in the book. Second, the verbal instructions are not always clear. Third, every page has a misleading link "click here to see an image of this craft" and when I clicked it showed me unrelated ads and pop-ups but no image of the craft.

Unlike a lot of crafting books this one actually provides some useful, easy and excellent projects. From embellishing clothing accessories to decorating for bridal or baby showers I that think that I will use some of these ideas frequently.If you like immediate inexpensive craft ideas that provide good looking and useful results you will certainly like this book. If i were you, grab a copy of this book now.

When you read though these reviews you need to be aware that there are two different camps in Math Education: Constructivist (NCTM) and Traditional. Constructists focus on application (pragmatics), so spend a lot of time on "real world" projects, communicating about math, and what they call "problem solving" which really means just doing real world problems. Traditionalists take a broader and deep approach and try to cover semantics (the meaning of math), syntax (how you write and rewrite math problems), AND pragmatics. If you look at a book from the Constructivist camp you will see lots of colors and topics and it will jump around without making many meaningful connections. Open this book and you will see no colors and each problem set is tightly integrated with the last. This is by design! The author purposely select problems that students typically make mistakes on so they can learn to avoid making them in the future. This is clearly explicitly stated in the Preface! I pity the poor student who tries to jump into the middle of this book, because the author steps you up through increasingly difficult problems of the same type so that you can learn how to do hard problems (that most students can't solve and won't learn how to solve using the Constructivist approach).I've been using this book for three years and I am very happy with the level of knowledge of my 6th and 8th grade sons. The book intentionally introduces them to problems they will encounter in physical science, chemistry, and physics. However, book is primarily focused on the syntax of math and does not spend much time on semantics, pragmatics, or aesthetics, but without its foundation working with math will always be a challenge. If you want your students to do well on the ACT/SAT math sections and prepare them for advanced mathematics this and Saxon Algebra 2 are the best books on the market. If you're worried that it doesn't contain enough real world problems and math theory then buy a couple of supplemental books. For what it aims to achieve you won't find a better book. I spent years searching for a book like this and this is the only one I've found that's this good. Strongly recommended.

Classic of the spiral approach to mathematics, my daughter seems to be making good progress with this series and we are using the series as her main math textbook. The spiral approach is where you introduce a new concept or two and include problems that review older concepts. It has sufficient examples and problem sets. We are now supplementing with the Art of Problem Solving series which a friend of ours who was a mathematics major strongly recommended. Art of Problem solving for a math competition oriented approach and Saxon for the more normal approach.

Really good text book for middle schooler comparing with Common Core books. It is a huge help for my middle schooler to catch up some math after using Common Core books for years. When will our school could understand this and stop wasting our money on Common Core system? Before that day comes, I will continue use books from this series to help my kid.

We're huge Saxon math fans here. My oldest son has used this curriculum for several years now and in that time has only needed help a handful of times. Very good and thorough explanations, as well as excellent sequence that develops proficiency at every level.

I homeschool my two children. I used Saxon at the beginning then was tempted to switch to two other math curriculums: Singapore math and Art of Problem solving. At the end, I have to agree that Saxon Math is the best choice for my children. They are able to teach themselves math by using Saxon Math.There is no short cut to learn math, unless you are math genius. As much as I hate repeating practice, it is an unavoidable learning process for some people to reach the point of "I get it!". My children are among those people.Even for Singapore Math, you still need to use total of 5 books(lots of repetitions) to retain the learning of new math concepts. When I used Singapore Math to teach my younger one, I only bought textbook and workbook. I found out that when we came back to the same concept after a period of time(the method Singapore Math uses), I had to teach the same thing all over again.For Art of Problem Solving, I guess one needs to have math talent to use it as main curriculum. The math concepts are not introduced systematically. After finishing Art of Problem Solving Prealgebra and proceeding to chapter 9 in Algebra, we tested my daughter's concept and she was simply lost. We asked her to redo it but she was so confused. At the end, she begged me to use Saxon instead.Now both my children use Saxon Math(3rd edition) and we are all happy.Math is math. The concepts never change. The change is in the test. I want my children to have a solid foundation, not to dance around the changing math standards.

i bought this book because i have been hired to tutor a group of homeschooled kids.each exercise set is comprehensive. the kids were turned down by a number of teachers who said it was too hard to teach from.i was intrigued enough to purchase the book and start tutoring.the exercise material is very good. but back it up with some cheat sheetswhen en exercise refers to a previous lesson, the exercise is indexed an helps the student go back and review the material.

I have been using Saxon math products for my children for years and absolutely love this for Algebra 1. The lessons are explained in a way that my oldest gets it without any problems. We also use the Teaching CD's to assist in explanations. You will be very pleasantly pleased with the results of using this Algebra 1 Textbook.

I used this book to tutor my son the summer after he strugged through Algebra in school. It really helped him to solidify his knowledge, and to understand concepts that had gone right over his head. Saxon is a great learning method.

I did my master's thesis on endowment investing, and I wish this book was around at the time I wrote the paper. This book, alongside both works by David Swensen, is required reading for institutional investors. This is not a titillating listing of sexy-sounding investment strategies. Instead, Carlson (much like Swensen) offers valuable wisdom in the tools required for successful institutional investing.I'm not sure how much more I can say about the caliber of this book. Every institutional investors needs to read this.

I loved reading this book. It is accurate, clear, true - and short, as it can be read in a couple of hours. The return on investing couple of hours could be amazing, if the lessons are properly implemented. Obviously that is easier said that done, as it goes against our human nature, career risk and all those other biases that stand between us and long-term investment success.The author does an outstanding job of describing what is really needed to achieve investment success for institutional investors. In my opinion, the lessons are applicable to individual investors as well.

Given how important institutional financial management is to so many of us (whether we know it or not — via pensions, foundations, and endowments), it’s remarkable to me that there aren’t more books written about the subject. Ben is an incredibly clear thinker and writer, and this should be required reading for any fiduciary involved in the management of institutional assets. The advice in this book is not specific to any period of time, and I suspect this book will have an incredibly long shelf life in terms of its utility and applicability. Perhaps most impressive of all is the fact that Ben covered such a wide range of important topics in such a compact form.

Great book with knowledge that can be applied across several areas of everyday life but especially investing. Not long winded like many other books.

Chapter 4 May be one of my favorite overviews of creating an investment process ever penned. Great book, well written. Great value per page & per $.

Several years ago, I discovered the work on Natasha Crain online. She has a very successful blog called Christian Mom Thoughts. I have gotten to know Natasha over the last few years and I am so happy to see the publication of her second book Talking with Your Kids about God: 30 Conversations Every Christian Parent Must Have.As someone who leads campus apologetic ministries on two college campuses (The Ohio State University (64,000 students) and Columbus State Community College (30,000) students, I am always interested to see people who provide apologetic resources for families. After all, I have had the opportunity to speak to hundreds of students about the existence of God and I can tell when someone didn’t get their questions answered before they got to college.So I am happy to say Natasha’s book does an excellent job of asking the right discussion topics/questions for parents and their kids. I can say without hesitation that nearly all of the topics in this book are the same questions students wrestle with on a college campuses. The chapters are short and concise. But because of the length of the chapters and accessibility, it makes them easy for parents to utilize. She also includes questions at the end of each chapter that can be used for discussion points.Natasha also includes many personal antidotes as well as quotes from atheist/skeptical bloggers and writers. Natasha is in touch with contemporary objections and she also knows the culture. Granted, she has heard plenty of objections on her blog as well.One thing I really appreciated about the book is that not only did Natasha deal with many common objections to God’s existence (both scientific and existential), she also provided some chapters on theology. Yes, theology! Issues such as God’s nature and character were addressed. If there’s anything that makes people reject God, it’s a complete misunderstanding about who God is. Trust me, I see it happen all the time.Okay, so now I will ahead and obviously admit that there is one chapter that stands out above all the rest. And here it is: Her chapters called “How Much Evidence Do We Need to Be Confident God Exists?In it she says the following:“Ratio Christi is an organization that is making a major impact for Christ on college campuses—one of the most challenging environments for young Christians today. Their mission is to “equip university students and faculty to give historical, philosophical, and scientific reasons for following Jesus Christ.” Ratio Christi does so by planting collegiate chapters that facilitate conversations on these subjects. Eric Chabot is the founder and director of the Ratio Christi chapter at Ohio State University, where he’s been engaging with students on the truth of Christianity since 2004. Chabot says that in all the years he’s been involved in campus outreach, he’s heard one objection to God’s existence more than any other: Why won’t God show me a direct sign that he exists? In other words, students feel that despite whatever evidence there is that theoretically points to God’s existence, it’s not enough. Having read the last few chapters, you may think these students aren’t aware of the compelling evidence for God’s existence in nature. And that’s undoubtedly true for many. But for others, the key problem is the amount and type of evidence. They want more in order to believe. An example of this is an agnostic student Chabot video interviewed for his blog.Chabot asked the student, “What would be compelling reasons to believe that the God of the Bible exists?” The student replied:” I would have to say unambiguous, direct evidence. . . . Some people will use their explanation for God existing as things we don’t know . . . [like] the arguments [that] everything is so fine-tuned, but that doesn’t do much for me. I would very much prefer to have actual, direct evidence of somebody saying, “This directly points to God Himself coming down and speaking.” And at that point I’d have to verify with someone that I’m not hallucinating. . . . It has to be some direct evidence of God, not an extrapolation of evidence from something else.”Yes, I am honored Natasha mentioned us in her book. I honestly feel like I can’t say enough about this book. I enjoyed Natasha’s last book and follow her blog. When she decided to create a launch team to pre-read this new book before it’s official release I jumped at the chance. And this book surpassed my expectations! Talking With Your Kids About God is broken down into 5 sections: The Existence of God, Science and God, The Nature of God, Believing in God, and The Difference God Makes. Each of these sections is broken down into short, manageable chapters, that cover one specific idea. At the end of the chapter, key points are summarized, and conversation points are listed.These concise chapters really give parents the key information needed to enable them to have meaningful conversations with their children. Natasha has a gift for breaking down complex topics into simple and easily understood ideas. The conversation points really help give direction on tackling each idea. This is one of the most approachable books on apologetics I’ve read.I also think that while geared towards parents, this book has a wide range of applications... Sunday school teachers, grandparents, teachers, and the like. But I see this being beneficial for anyone interested in defending their faith! Don’t let the focus on parenting keep you from getting this book.Lastly, as a homeschooling parent, I just want to say that this easily fits into any curriculum. The chapters average 5-7 pages, so it would not be difficult to read a chapter a week and have discussion. I found that I was able to fit in the conversations naturally throughout our weekly work. I’m always looking for ways to bring in a Biblical worldview into our school days, and this really helps!I enjoyed this book so much I bought another copy. This will be one that I give away on a regular basis!!

This is truly not the case, as Natasha Crain's newest book Talking to Your Kids About God clearly demonstrates.Using story illustrations that parents can readily identify with, Crain incorporates apologetics into every day life.In 300 pages, she covers the evidences for the existence of God, how science confirms the God of the Bible, the nature of God (trinity, love, and justice), how Christianity is different from other religions, and how all these things apply to us and the world around us.If you have been debating on how to begin the study of apologetics, whether it is because you want to be able to talk to your children about why Christianity is True or you just need to solidify your own worldview, I highly recommend this book as a way to dive in. Organizing Silence won the Outstanding Book of the Year Award (2000) from the National Communication Association. Chapter One offers an intriguing theory of the origin of language as grounded in silence. Chapters Two and Three review theories of silence focusing on political silencing of minority groups. Chapters Four, Five and Six discuss sexual harassment as a means of silencing people. I like that Clair included the sexual harassment of men in One Man's Story of Sexual Harassment. Chapters Seven, Eight and Nine talk about resistance to being silenced and aesthetic approaches to reach that end. I found the book well written and well researched.

I have no real experience of what it's like in the Arctic. Thus finding out about it from reading a well-written mystery novel was a pleasure. The factual details of what everyday life entails in the far North for the people who live there are fascinating to me. While Edie Kiglatuk was solving the mystery, I read about her diet including blubber, seal blood and other local foods extremely strange to me. I read of her continuous need to protect herself from the elements by layering furs and other sorts of clothing that she had obtained and made from hunting. This life is not simple or easy; survival is sometimes a moment-by-moment achievement. All in all, I appreciated the way the author made the characters real and down-to-earth and eminently believable, the way the environment itself was depicted that made it, in all its characteristics both subtle and dramatic, a character in the story. I was not only entertained but informed by this book.

This British author and world traveler has created a terrific character in Edie Kiglatuk, an Inuit hunting guide in the High Arctic. Watching Edie build an ice shelter, or drive a dog sled over the tundra, or handle a rifle, or outsmart bad guys, feels no different than watching a male superhero in action. The only female qualities about her are her oiled pigtails and her intense maternal love for her stepson Joe. When Joe commits suicide, in a context of other suspicious deaths, Edie's grief throws her into a bloodhound-like investigative mode.She is reluctantly assisted by the area constable, who alternates between finding Edie exasperating and attractive. Edie gets into all sorts of trouble, as she finds out more and more about what's really going on in her hunting grounds. And she's up against some very scary people.The action is non-stop, yet has a slow-motion feeling. Edie moves cautiously through tense situations, observing her surroundings minutely, like the patient hunter she is.I really could imagine I was in the Arctic, reading White Heat. I could almost feel the icicles forming on my nose hairs, and taste the seal stew and blood soup that Edie is so fond of eating. The plot is complicated, but eventually all the pieces came together and I think I got it. The characters are very well drawn, with some delightful eccentrics among them.I enjoyed this book, and look forward to stalking more bad guys with Edie.

Haven’t enjoyed a book this much in a long time. Very well written, great detective story, subplots everywhere, bad guys under every rock, and a lot of really interesting information about the Inuit and their culture. Looking forward to reading the others.

This is the story of Edie Kiglatuk, a native of far off, underpopulated Ellesmere Island, a large island with few inhabitants, mostly Inuits. Edie is half Inuit, half qalunaat (white), but feels herself wholly Inuit. She is a hunting guide, teacher and has never been away from Nunavut. However, looking for leads she flies to Greenland and is surprised at the size of Nuuk. She is befriended by a young woman, another Inuit, who shows her the ropes about getting around the large city of Nuuk. Edie has never been to such a large town.The book begins when Edie is guiding two white men on a hunting trip. One of the men is killed, a shooting accident? Edie thinks not. But she is not believed. She is only a woman. Edie has been married, divorced, no kids. Her stepson, Joe, is the love of her life. He is planning to become a nurse. Edie is proud of him wanting to help his people. Then Joe commits suicide. He had no reason to. He was not depressed, he was ambitious. He was like a son to Edie, the son she never had. She is thirty-three and trying to get away from alcohol abuse. And she is winning the fight. But all this might set her back. Joe's alcoholic mother blames Edie for all this. She stole her husband, her son. Edie is bent on knowing the truth of all this. Does desolate Craig Island have hidden treasures beneath its ice and snow?Another character is Derek Palliser. Derek is part Inuit, part qalunaat, and part Cree (an enemy of Inuits). He feels as though he is put together with left over and unneeded parts. Derek is a police sergeant in another tiny Inuit town, a distance from Akisaq. He has problems with some of the Inuits who are at war with different family members. He is in love with a Russian lady, an artist, who is just using him. Derek is studying lemmings, he would have liked to be a biologist, but he couldn't afford a college education.Edie is a gutsy lady who tackles life unafraid. She wonders about what happened, these characters to die for an unknown reason. And she is determined to find out the truth.The writer's words pictures Ellesmere Island and the surrounding islands very realisticly, very poetically and brings readers into this fierce, harsh, snow and ice covered country.
