This is my review from 5 day visit in Siep Reap/Angkor Wat National Park and its 2 single-day trips to its vicinity._____________Although Eyewitness series is the only source that I will take with my trips, and I have done so so loyally for over a decade, this is not the in-depth guide for any Siem Reap visitor, but just a good source for trip plans.Angkor Park/Siem Reap is just allocated as few as 35 pages of illustration and simple texts, and the history was not broadly informative, especially without any recent updates of political changes, or social perception, or even their current intense border disputes with neighboring countries of Thailand.And, I have no idea why it is heavily shared with its vicinity and Laos. Just imagine this guidebook is as sketchy as any thick single volume of Europe guidebook containing tens of country that barely describes the details or local interests of one country.Out of 35 pages, I only find one map was simple and useful, but the much needed vicinity map outside Siem Reap was missed, and I couldn't locate myself from a whole day trip to other temples beyond Angkor Park. Still it was within 2 hours, 60-70 mile radius, on a scarce asphalt road system.Other than that, the book doesn't describe any useful tip of the actual people or where to eat, or layout of the Siem Reap night town, which was as interesting as the ruins or Bali we had visited.I had to rely upon my off-line map on the smartphone and TA on-line, instead, but that is also limiting us only in WiFi area of the hotels.There will be a lot of updates necessary to make this book handy during the trip.

This is great guide to complement your trip planning.It has great maps from the temples in both countries and good standard info from the cities.However, it is not the most up to date guide.Great source of info for trip planning but i don't recommend and the only guide to buy.Lonely Planet has better guide with more practical information.

DK Eyewitness Travel is an EXCELLENT guidebook for wherever you travel in the world. Great photos. Easy to use before and during the trip. It also makes a great little reference book when you get back.

I cut this to take with me to these countries as I had too many guide books. These are always great guides

DK is one of my favorite travel guides. The many photos truly help me assess the appeal of a location/site. I just wish there was more effort to help develop an itinerary. EG how many days to spend in each location. However other guides do that and since there is no Kindle edition of the DK Guides, I'll be purchasing those to take with me.

I have no issues with DK Eyewitness Travel Guide series. It's the best that's available in the market. Just a bit heavy to bring it around while traveling.What I want to comment is actually the slow processing speed of Amazon. I've placed my order on 17 July and it's only shipped on 20 July. AND the estimated delivery date is 31 Aug!? 45 days for the entire process? I'm only in Singapore. Not outer space... Can things be sped up a little here? FYI, there's only one book in my order.Hope Amazon improves on this, else delivery time is the first thing to consider when placing order here by any Asian country customers.

Rachel Carson, who exposed the dangers of DDT and founded the environmental movement, was a hero of mine growing up, but I didn't know much about her life. I was therefore thrilled to readAndrea Barnet's fascinating portrait, one of four, in Visionary Women.I don't have time to read individual biographies of all the women who changed our view of the world, so I felt I hit the jackpot with this wonderful book. It came at a time when I was in dire need of inspiration.The women are wisely chosen. In addition to Rachel Carson, there are profiles of Jane Jacobs, who saved lower Manhattan from the developers' wrecking ball, Jane Goodall, who discovered that chimps use tools, and Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters, one of the early farm-to-table advocates. The author has a sharp eye for the telling detail and a novelist's knack for storytelling. She writes with grace and intimacy.For me, what set the book apart was the way the author linked the women's approach to their fields. They were amateurs who threw out pre-conceived notions and stubbornly relied on their own instincts and observations. They looked for the organic relations and interdependencies and succeeded in making original contributions to the fields of environmentalism, anthropology, urban planning, and food sustainability.The book would make an excellent choice for book clubs.Barbara WrightDenver, CO

This is in interesting book. I kept wondering why the author chose the four that she did, and was disappointed that it wasn't addressed the preface or introduction. Readers who are already familiar with the women, and who expect to learn new and illuminating insights will be disappointed. The author's writing doesn't delve very far beneath the surface. For those of us less familiar with the four, though, it was a quick way to get an overview. Of the four, I found Jane Jacobs to be the most interesting, and her work to have been the most significant. Some readers will disagree, of course, but the benefit of reading this book is that one gets a stack of facts to buttress one's arguments. Much has been written about Goodall and Carson so the sections devoted to them are easy going. The author is repetitive in spots, and could have benefited from a sharp penciled editor. Barnet also belabors certain points, and often I found myself skipping paragraphs, thinking "OK. I get it. Enough already." She's an able writer, if not a lively one. But perhaps that's just personal preference. All told, this is a good summer read.

I look forward to some bordeaux-fueled conversations about this one when my book group gets their hands on it (and I intend to see to it that they do.) Looking at the lives of these four unassuming twentieth century paradigm shifters opens up doors that offer wonderful vistas in many directions. Come for the French restaurants and chimp-watching ( stay to take on DDT!)Reading Barnet’s book (which in my case meant mostly listening to it) is a feast for the senses. I was often drawn into thoughts about the unexplored moments in my own life ---the chance encounters on a street corner, blurry insights that may not yet be possible to name. In these dark times such a beacon of hope shines very brightly. Thinking of all the people I'd like to give it to I read the book in a few big gulps, not realizing I had been so thirsty.

This profoundly original book made me so proud to be a woman! Not because I was able to pretend that I share - with Rachel Carson, Jane Jacobs, Jane Goodall and Alice Waters - their incredible doggedness, tolerance for endless work, ability to bounce back countless times after personal tragedy, continuing rejections, condescending dismissal and outright smear campaigns, because I don’t. Or, that I’m strong enough to believe in my own vision and make it manifest, no matter how many years it takes, in the only way that I know it must be - because I’m not.However, somehow, in the way that this unstoppable mosaic of four brilliant lives is woven together, I get a little glimpse of the way we women work, the way we think, the way that we see our world. I see it that way too, and because I spend no small amount of time doubting myself, this makes me proud, happy and actually inspired. What is this way of seeing things that I’m talking about? You must read the book to find out for yourself, but it has to do with always having one foot on the ground, connecting and being connected to, and using keen observation to discover where we fit into the grand scheme of things.These women bravely stood their ground in front of an industry hell-bent on poisoning our entire planet, the wrecking ball of “urban renewal,” potentially devastating species arrogance, and powerful tides of soulless conformity. Here we are, half a century later, realizing they were beacons, lightning a better path. Without them we would be living in a far more dangerous and damaged world.I have to say I’ve never read a book like this before. It’s unusual in the way that it dares to trace really big, bold patterns across landscapes of glittering, finely wrought detail. But that’s what makes it so readable: each woman’s story is a fascinating personal journey, laced with keenly observed emotion and fun, salacious tidbits; then there is the wild but masterful trip through the history and popular culture of the 1960s. The big ideas come sensitively, via gentle revelation, unfolding slowly with the power and purpose of a blooming flower.

An inspiring, very well written and constructed book. Barnet both tells the stories of each of woman featured, and finds the common ground among them. I had not focused on how much each of these visionary women were/are sensation-types, seeing the world in its details and building vision from that base And--spoiler alert--"one individual can make a difference"--and this book proves that point.

In the late 1980's, Tom Wolfe published "The Bonfires of the Vanities", which was acclaimed as a profound, satirical look at the go-go 1980's in New York City. I read it at the time but thought it was snarky and filled with unlikable characters who were little more than caricatures. Now, I don't mind "unlikable" characters, but they have to be INTERESTING "unlikable" characters, which I didn't find Wolfe's to be.Thirty years later, author Seth Greenland has published "The Hazards of Good Fortune", which is a wonderfully written story of New Yorkers in 2012. They are a mix of wealthy, poor, professional basketball players and members of their entourages, black, white, famous, and, of course, those "on the make". The central character is Harold Jay Gladstone, around whom the rest of the characters revolve. Jay Goldstone - he had dropped the "Harold" early on - is a wealthy property developer (NOT Donald J Trump), who has lived a good life. Some would say he has lived a good and giving life "despite" his vast wealth, but he is a man who has given back to the community-at-large vast amounts of charitable funds. He has built parks and endowed college scholarships for many poor students. While not a particularly observant Jew, he has tried to live up to the Jewish ideals of giving to others. But the acquisition he is most proud of is his ownership of an NBA team, based in Newark, New Jersey. One of the team members - the star, actually - is Dag Maxwell, who is coming to the end of his productive years. Dag wants one more big contract, but Jay and the team officials aren't sure of Dag's "economics".From that starting point, Jay Gladstone's life begins to unravel. Family members, friends, business and sports associates roll in and out of the story. Almost all have a bit of a back-story and Seth Greenland's genius as a writer is to draw these people as "real" and not caricatures. The reader is interested in the characters and what happens to them in the story. The book's quite long - 600 or so pages - but the writing is so good that I never once was bored. In a year that I've read many great novels, this one might be the best. It's not a "literary" novel, to be sure, but it's a damned readable one.I'd also like to point out the cost of the Kindle edition, which is a very reasonable $9.99.

The Hazards of Good Fortune is a superb read by Seth Greenland, a gifted and prolific writer. The book is gripping and extremely relevant and contains Greenland’s typical amazing insights into the motivations and behaviors of people from all walks of life and backgrounds without judgement and with a healthy dose of empathy in that you are inside the head and heart of all involved. His use of language is precise and inspired. It’s a wild ride, funny, edgy – you can’t put the book down. I’d say Greenland has outdone himself, but if I’m being honest I have thought each novel of his has been brilliant (his plays too). I’m addicted.

Not sure what the author intended, a parody or a book of serious social commentary. I liked it and read it to the end giving my brain a rest from some involved and hard to follow philosophic books.I tried to convince my wife that the author is a real cultural conservative producing a sendup of modern culture. He's just not all that skillful and subtle about it.And the plot pivot points are strained. A husband catching his wife in bed with another man does not make a semi humorous jibe. No he shoots him.Fun to read.

Don't read this review if you want to be surprised by the book.Certainly an entertaining and well written book. But it's quite depressing to be reminded that life goes on just fine for the ultra rich while all of the those left in the wreckage they create are quickly forgotten. True to life - and perhaps that is why the ending stings so acutely.A mirror image of the disgusting world we live in.

Never heard of this author previously. So glad I saw a review in the Los Angeles Times and decided to take a chance as the description of the story intrigued me. What a fantastic author and story teller. At 600+ pages never once did I hesitate to completely enjoy the engaging story of a life coming apart at the seams. I certainly had sympathy for the protagonist and was hoping until the end he would overcome his travails. Highly recommend this book.

This is a long book which just flies by because it is so good. Fast paced, well written, insightful, meaningful, Dickensian in scope. A modern story of our world. Timely. Just read it. Once you start you won’t stop. I’ve read all of Seth’s books and loved all of them.Highly recommended.

A good read if more serious than his other books. I have read them all. I do not regret thee time spent reading anything by this writer.

I always enjoy Follett's books. A plus is that, in this case, he left his comfort zone as to people and places. The minus is that the book was written with the idea of turning it into a movie. I guess I liked Mr. Follett better in his comfort zone.
