There are a lot of points made by other reviewers, praising the qualities of this book and its author - and I agree with what's been said so far, no need top repeat it.All I want to add is that, comparing Case Interview Secrets to other books about case interview preparation, I found it to provide the most structured, clearly enunciated and solid approach to case interviewing. Sure, it does not include case material; the author is aware you can find those in many other books available. Instead, he insists on the crucial details that help you build the right mindset and habits, and most of all, those that help you build a consistent, logical and focused method for solving cases. Why? Because Victor Cheng is talking to you from the perspective of an actual, experienced consultant, and a seasoned interviewer, and helps you understand what consulting firms are looking for in you. That's a tremendously valuable perspective. This book alone won't be enough for your case interview preparation, but it's the one single book, in my view, you cannot do without.
Case Interview Secrets is practical, clear, and concise. It delivers just what you need to know to nail a case interview. It worked for me and I got the job. Here's how the book helped me. I came across this book just 24 hours before my case interview. I worked through the book and zeroed in on sections I thought were most important for me. I focused most on the frameworks that Victor Cheng presents. I learned the frameworks and created practice scenarios using situations I had experienced. At the end of my preparation I felt very confident that I could lead a case interview conversation. And that is what mattered most. Confidence. Because, of course, in the interview, none of the frameworks exactly applied. But my mind was prepared to think in terms of frameworks. That was really helpful. When I arrived at the interview, I was ready to go to the white board and lead a discussion knowing I had frameworks to draw on.But the book is much more than a set of frameworks. The book also explains how to structure your case discussion. There is specific guidance for creating an opening, analysis, and closing for your case. This gives you a great view of how to create a discussion on-the-fly, which is what you have to do in a case interview. This book delivers the content, and sets your frame of mind, so that you can confidently enter a case interview.
I probably had bigger expectations of this book. It is a good product, but it was a great disappointment that the rest of the content (cases, for instance) are located in the author's blog as a paid service. The book itself is good, and it provides you what it promises: a good starting point in structuring your answers for job interviews in the major consulting management's firms. Though, it lack of practice cases, and it is self-referenced all the time (things like: "check my blog for further information", and then you have to pay extra for it.). The main claim of this book is practice at least 100 hours, but it does not provide cases to practice in the first place.Other than that, I think it is a good starting point. I'm trying Cosentino's book now.
I would recommend this book as a starting point for any recent graduate/senior looking to go into consulting with no prior experience. Victor Cheng tosses all the fancy frameworks aside and leads you through the thinking process that is key to solving cases and that firms actively look for in their candidates. That being said, sometimes the explanations seem "dumbed-down", and other times it sounds like as if Cheng's endless plugging in publicity for his website...yet overall, this book helped me tremendously as a rookie in a liberal arts program.Update: I got into a "top three" consulting firm and I think this book helped tremendously. :)
Good first book for prepping for case interviews, you will need to get some additional books/material for practicing cases. Remember you will need about 50-100 hours of practice depending on how natural the process comes to you. This is a good introduction and a pleasant read, if you can get past the author's lack of modesty.
I highly recommend purchasing this book. Victor does a great job at conveying his recommended approach to solving cases regardless of the business situation. I first purchased Case In Point, another popular case interview book and thought it was great as well, though after purchasing Case Interview Secrets. I wish I had only purchased the latter. Case Interview Secrets provides a simple yet thorough process to think like a consultant or business analyst should. Once again, I highly recommend this book.
I'm making a career change and have been interviewing for executive level positions in industry. As part of the interview process, I have been asked to solve cases so the interviewer can get a sense for my thinking. Though I have never worked for a management/strategy consulting company, I have a strong business background and extensive educational experience so have been able to give reasonably coherent answers. I realized that I didn't have a good structure or a way to present my thinking in a succinct way. I devoured Case Interview Secrets and immediately saw ways I could apply the concepts Victor Cheng lays out in the book to exponentially improve my approach and presentations during the interviews. Victor Cheng is the real deal, the concepts in this book can be used by anyone running a business to think about problems and to come up with the right questions so he or she can solve problems for their own business and for the customers they serve.
I thought this book was pretty helpful, but sometimes it felt like it was just an advertisement for the author's website. It was definitely helpful, but I think Case in Point is more helpful. If you only want to get one case interview prep book, I'd go with Case in Point. This book would be a good secondary guide. (FTR I didn't get the job ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
